Totally agree Chris. I've still got the same bass I bought in 1989. And a 4x4 cassette which I still use sometimes. I completely missed the 90s cuz I was busy writing my own music. Songs come from within, not things outside of you!
I have had a long held belief that most great songs can be distilled to a singer and an acoustic guitar. There are examples I've found that challenge that, but the point still stands. If you can make something amazing with only a few elements, it can turn into something spectacular.

I still record with my first bass, which is a 1995 Squier P-Bass and still sounds great.
That’s pretty awesome. That would be fun to record on a cassette. Keep it simple. All about the song.
That’s awesome! Yeah, I’ve had my P bass since 2004. My P bass my telly, and my Nord are instruments I will never sell.
