My Dad and I started going into the Superstitions in the early 60's....He had been going since the mid 50's... I have lots of "crazy" stories... One time we found a huge stash of guns and explosives way back in there... Another time we could hear a bell getting rung echoing through the canyon... the closest town of any size and it wasn't much more then a roadside stop was Apache Junction, but it would have been to far off for that sound to carry through.. We spent plenty of nights in there as well... some OK some filled with crazy noises going off... One time in the mid late 60's we found a group of hippies living up in there... We kept our distance and they never saw us but we watched them for a bit... We also ran into some NAI's Native American Indians once in the 70's.. Great group of guys hunting in there... we spent a lot of time up on the Navajo reservation so getting along with these guys was quite easy... They were not Apache..fyi... Anyway, I have hundreds of stories of the things we found, saw, heard or had direct contact with.. My advice to anyone wanting to go into those hills searching for Gold... Be very careful, be very armed and better yet, best to just stay out unless you have been going for a long time and know your way, or there is a good chance you will never come back out..!!

I was hiking deer Creek trail early one morning. And I wasn't paying much attention that and I should have been. All of a sudden I look up and here's this rattlesnake just stretched out on the trail in the Sun. I went around him, and proceeded on my heart. Not too long after, I hear a rattle off in the bushes. I think my timing for my hike was coordinated with their time to come out of the cold and get some sun. I didn't see this one and that's okay

I agree. I was ready to scold Hank for shooting the snake, and then he didn't. I've come across at least 4 rattle snakes in the past few weeks while hiking. They just want to be left alone and give you plenty of warning to do just that. I give them a wide berth. Then I go my way and they go their way.
