    After plenty of use, the rubber pinch roller in my TRV27 escaped in a big way. To its credit, it did not mangle the tape, but it did behave similarly to this one. I read somewhere that Sony had a problem with failing image sensors in some early 2000s camcorders, and that they were repairing them for a while. I've got a TRV19 with that problem, but if I leave it on for a while, the image sensor kind of "dribbles" back into working order.
    That DVD/VHS machine was a major score.

  • @RetroPCUser

    Those HandyCams are known for dirty contacts on the CCD lens board assembly and motherboard. Spray some contact cleaner (deoxit or lubricant recommended since they're plastic safe, unlike the other contact cleaner that has isopropyl alcohol, which isn't plastic safe) in both the CCD lens board and motherboard, let it sit for a good 4-6 minutes (10 minutes recommended), insert the cable that connects in between the two, and viola. I did that on my DCR-TRV260 that has the replacement lens board (should've kept the old one) installed, and it works once again. I kept the original lens since the replacement one had bad focus when zoomed out.

    I'm fairly sure that the CCD has failed on the minidv camera - I had a batch of Sony minidv camcorders at work that suffered the exact same issue. Turns out Sony didn't give the CCDs sufficient cooling, so they eventually cooked themselves and stopped outputting anything!

    • @akaiuwu
      @akaiuwu 7 лет назад +2

      M3G4UK surely it'd have thrown up an error message as well? dying sensors (as with my Sony DSC t7) show glitches and messes colours (such as promenance of purple and black) in video and photos.

    • @KRAFTWERK2K6

      Oh damn... And i thought dead pixels on Sony CCDs were the worst problem that would happen :(

    • @M3G4UK
      @M3G4UK 7 лет назад +1

      Nope - they would literally just die. Maybe it wasn't cooling, just poor internal wiring - but either way, after a certain time they would no longer output an image. Replacing the lens/CCD module with a known working one fixed the issue, and it was a fairly straightforward swap.

    • @akaiuwu
      @akaiuwu 7 лет назад

      M3G4UK so they'd just flat out die without anything else, not even prior color mess? I didn't know that .

    I would highly recommend for anyone interested in collecting second hand AV electronics to purchase a programmable universal remote for situations like these. I bought a decent Logitech one for $30 from Aldi a few years back. All it takes to program is plugging it into a computer and selecting the model number of the device in question. It has been exceptionally handy for testing devices over the years.

    Wow, that is the nicest VHS/DVD combo machine I've ever seen. And that TRV315 is a great camcorder - I hear no tape mechanism background noise!
    Try pointing that MiniDV camcorder at the sun and see if anything shows up in the viewfinder. That'll determine if it's a stuck aperture or a failure somewhere in the camera circuitry. The late Neil had a camcorder doing the same thing, and I discovered you could dimly see a bright light in the viewfinder. He was able to fix it by manually manipulating the aperture to unstick it.

  • @wilkes85
    @wilkes85 7 лет назад +1

    Hehe, nice kitty. That DVD/VCR combo seems surprisingly good; I've never seen one with such acceptable quality before. Too bad the remote didn't work... and it's annoying how so many electronics now absolutely need the remote in order to do certain things... how about a flap on the front that hides additional buttons, if they wanted to give the front a more simplistic look? It's worse when you try to use a universal remote and it still doesn't do everything you need it to do. I found a DVD recorder at the thrift store, and it too has that problem where it won't record "copy-protected" video... even broadcast TV; a huge percentage of TV shows can't be recorded... that alone makes DVD recorders entirely useless. Even DVR won't record some shows. I'd rather stick with my VCR, that way I can record anything and everything.

    The slider on the battery was a visible indicator so you knew if the battery was full or empty, while being in the field. My old JVC GR-AX280 VHC-C Camcorder batteries had that too. The battery of my Canon HV20 had a contacts protection cap that had a hole in it and you had to turn it in a way so if attached to the battery you would either see a bit of a colorful sticker on the battery or just grey of the plastic. Grey would mean full and the colorful sticker peeking through the hole would mean "empty - needs recharge".

    Interesting finds. Except the Sony VCR/DVD combo recorder was from 2009, but this got to be one of the last models that Sony made until the VHS format died a slow death. VCR's discontinued from companies from 2009 through 2016 since Funai, the company nobody cares has finally done with VCR's. The reasons why is that no one has buying VCR's anymore, because people moved on to DVD's and Blu-Ray's instead of VHS. People got rid of them or donated them to thrift stores or selling them online which was kinda cheap like Amazon, eBay, Etsy or whether online store to find. And also, 2009 was the year that this combo was manufactured, and it was after all movie studios has completely done with the VHS format with their pre-recorded tapes. The last one I believe was from around 2006 through 2007, and other brands are still making blank VHS tapes until the end of its VHS run from around 2012 through 2016.
    That happened when the same company made the Betamax format and the Betamax VCR's since they discontinued in the 1990's, and the tape itself ended in 2015. Sony started the Betamax format in 1975, and JVC started the VHS format a year later in 1976, and RCA was the first company that introduced the VHS VCR in 1977 as the "Selectavision", but the name was later common for CED video disc players, a failed format from 1981 where they put out movies on CED until 1986.

    Hi,
    A simple way to check to see if your remote is working to point the remote control at an AM radio (turned on). The remote should be within an inch or so of the radio. If the remote is working, you'll hear some interference every time you push one of the remote control buttons. If you don't hear any interference, move the remote control around a bit. Sometimes you need to turn the staton frequency off a little bit so the tuner is between stations.
    Regards, Tom

    Might be a modded firmware online to remove the Macrovision from the DVD / VHS recorder? I remember my first ever DVD player a Dansai 1010 in 2002, where I flashed the firmware the day I got it home to unlock VideoCD playback. This was in the days before DVD recorders were available, and using templates from the KVCD website for use in TMPGEnc to create your own VCDs was popular with enthusiasts.

    The 1st number is the date and the letter is the month I would bet? A-Jan , B-FEB etc

    • @vwestlife
      @vwestlife  7 лет назад +2

      You mean the Sony date codes? The number is the last digit of the year and the letter (according to everyone's best guess) is the quarter of the year, because people have only seen A, B, C, and D.

    You are lucky to live where you have thrift stores that have a good cache of old tech; I remember the days where I used to be able to find an Apple IIGS at Goodwill here, but for some reason these stores now send all of their computer/gaming/audio stuff to a store they created called GRID which marks everything up 100-200%

    vwestlife? That dvd/vhs combo does it put the vhs audio and video though the HDMI port? or do you need to use normal component cable?

    • @vwestlife
      @vwestlife  7 лет назад

      The audio goes through HDMI too.

    I think I wound up with some tapes from that same dealership, was it by chance Douglas Nissan?

    Set Top Box control bud, if I recall, was for a IR LED, to point at like a cable tuning box or such, to "turn to" the channel so that the VCR could record the unscrambled channel via RF CH 3/4. It's been ages, so don't take that to the bank, but, yeah, I believe that is what it was all about.

    Looks like you've picked up some pretty-good gear there. That combo DVD/VHS deck should, or might have input select switching behind a drop-down panel somewhere.

    Some good finds there. The thrift stores here would want eBay prices for all of those. They'd probably even put the cameras in a glass display case or something. I find it strange that they would separate items from their accessories. It just seems chaotic and unnecessary.
    I'd like to see what kind of job that VCR does upscaling VHS to 1080p

    hi vwestlife do you know if on modern sony handycams or any modern camcorder that uses sd cards for that matter can record in a similar fassion to the tape ones? E.g keep the final recording as one file as aposed to separate files?

    "dealer of Orange" maybe Orange CA or orange FL? regardless i find it interesting how thrift store stuff usually has some incredible journey it took to get to us. I once bought something off ebay from the East Coast that arrived to me in LA with its original 2004 receipt from the Bay Area

    • @vwestlife

      The tapes were from Douglas Nissan of Orange, California -- where the people running the dealership got arrested for fraud.

    It's nice how in your thrift stores you can check electrical products before you buy. In the UK you cant do that. No power points are provided. Not sure if thats for H&S reasons or just because nobody cares to use shelving with power points. I would imagine such shelving would be expensive for a charity shop as I would think it would be too specialist.
    Sometimes buying a VHS deck is a lottery.

    I have the very similar Sony RDR-VX560 which I use as my capture VCR because of the built-in TBC and Component output. The optical drive on mine is broken though and constantly tries to eject as long as it's plugged in.
