    I just sold all my cameras my drone and my action camera and placed an order for Q……, when mine Q arrives it will be the first i have ever seen one, it will be the first time i have held a Leica. I found this post by luck, your presentation if golden.

    I have had Leica Q for about a year and half. Originally a Canon user I got blown away with its functionality and quality. And your warning is so right and to the point. I just ordered an M10.

    Yes , the Q is a great camera and a joy to use :)
    End of 2015 i started to notice that most of the bells and whistles of modern digital cameras were somehow getting in my way of simply taking pictures. I found myself more thinking about what setting of the huge menus could be better then thinking about composition and the picture itself.
    After a weekend with the Q i was caught and purchased one the next day.
    It was with me around the world for the last year and it brought me back a lot of the fun i had lost.
    During this time i sold all my old gear and since last week a Leica M-D has joint the family for even more reduction to the basics , but the Q will stay for long time for sure :)

    Hello Thorsten, you are damned right! Three years ago I started with the Q, got the taste of this absolutely fantastic Leica lense and became addict to the look of the pictures and the feel of the machine. Well, long story short, I ended up with the M10, two Summiluxes and an old school Summaron. Unfortuntely I had to sell the Q to finance a part of all that stuff but hey, since the Q entrance I had nevermore a lack of endorphin and a fantastic picture quality. And now, I go on watching your great video again, poor but with a relaxed smile 🙂

    Your absolutely correct about the desire to get the best Leica, I wanted to evolve out of the standard DSLRs (bricks) that I've lugged around my travels for years, winding down in my retirement years, I wanted to still produce quality images with a good camera and guaranteed great images, I know it's all about having the right tools of the trade. So I jumped into the Leica pool with the Vario-X, I love the idea of a 28-70 zoom lens on a Leica. Everyone complained about the high f/3.5-6.4 lens, never bothered me because I always shot in good lighting, I didn't search for low light images (I have other cameras that can shoot in low light Nikon D750) so I would complain about not being able to shoot in low light, but, like Thorton said, you would evolve with Leica, so I did pick-up the Q, and with the automatic features (like the Vario-X) it gave me great leica images. Now, I just picked up a M240 w/50mm Summarit lens and probably convinced my wife that the M240 will be my last travel Leica. I bet Leica will come out with an M model with automation functions like the Q/Q2...what do you think Thorton?

    You say you don’t review cameras but that is of course both true and untrue. You do more than review cameras; you contextualise them. And in so doing, we learn about the provenance of our photographic tool and the Leica journey we embark on. Thanks for this holistic approach to appreciating the moment, everyday.

      So true. There is definitely a different feeling with the Q. I miss the feeling of simplicity as with my M9, Monochrom and M6. Although, the Q has been a great travel camera, I would not use carry it with me for my day to day shooting.

    I have to say that you are absolutely right about the camera as a gateway. I never wanted to research Leica, but foolishly looked into the Q ; I shouldn't have. The images are beautiful, there is an artistic quality to them that has made me crave this camera. Forget the technical specs, when you see the images; the tone, the color rendition, its truly amazing. I look at how the aperture ring operates and the ease of use and it really takes me back to the time of film with my Pentax ME super. I need to go to rehab.

    • @MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard

    Even in 2024 this is a great little camera. When Fuji can't be bothered to produce it's one competing model and the flippers are selling the previous model at exorbitant prices, it was the right time to move on this one. I have to say I absolutely love mine, and yes it is addicting as I immediately went to see how I could swap out all my other film gear for leica.

    Should I get TL2 or Q 2 if Q2 has 4K and some other great stuffs? For travel, street, event and video shooting.

    • @MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard
      @MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard  7 лет назад +1

      I have a hard time myself if I should take the Q or the TL2 when I have both on the table and want an easy camera to take out with me. So I guess deciding which to get is difficult for anyone.
      Likely, the one that appeals the most (for no particular reason) is the right one and of course the new one is often that one.

    Hello, i have already a Leica M9 (superb). I just bought a Leica Q to complete my M9 and experiment with auto focus and other modernity. Do you think I have to protect my lens with a UV filter even if I still have my lens shade? I often take pictures at the North Sea. thank you for your reply

    • @MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard
      @MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard  4 года назад

      I don't use UV filters, but if it makes you feel better, you can do it. It's an add-on for no real reason. The front glass of modern lenses is stronger than the UV glass (for scratches and hits).

    Hi Thorsten! Great Review! Thanks for that! To be honest, I have a "Problem" to make a Decision and perhaps you can help me I really want a Leica Q, because I want it! *Full Stop* Had the Q2 in my hands and it was nice. I mainly shoot Street and asked myself, do I need the Sealing and the bigger Sensor with regard to the Price Difference?! How do I want to deal the huge Data, when it comes to Computer-Power and Storage-Capacity?! - When it comes to the Difference between Q and Q-P I see no arguments in terms of technical reasons rather than optical ones. Perhaps you can answer my questions!? Cheers from Germany!

    Still one of the Best's video's about the Leica Q ! How do you estimate the quality of the JPEG's who are coming directly out of the camera ? Thanks for sharing your ideas/thoughts with us ! Greetz, Roger, Antwerp.

    • @MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard
      @MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard  7 лет назад +1

      The JPG's are pretty nice, but I would (almost) always suggest using the raw DNG file for color editing. Only the Leica TL has some very intersting JPG files that can easily be used straight out of camera and compete with the DNG's from that camera.

    Awesome review. Thanks for sharing.
    I use Leica M9 for 7 years now. I'm in love in simplicity & beauty. I still like pictures which comes out of it but in the same time I see growing gap (technical) between modern cameras. Coming back from trips or holidays I see how many (almost all) photos needs post processing compared to my other camera setup even with smaller sensor (Oly PenF). So, I'm thinking about switching to either Q (or possible Q v2) or buy additionally TL2. Besides technical issues important for me is whether my feeling to any of that new model is going to be so strong as to my M9 :)

    • @MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard
      @MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard  7 лет назад

      Yes the Leica M9 wins on the sould and the feel of it. Unfortunately for you, I would say the Leica M10 is the closest to Leica M9 I've ever been. Thats the one.

    • @MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard

      Nothing special on cold weather, except this. Always leave electronic devices on a table when you come inside. Never leave them in a bag over night because the change in temperature seals humidity inside the bag.
      Apart from that, all should be fine!

    • @CorentinHarbelot
      @CorentinHarbelot 7 лет назад

      Magic Of Light Thanks for the tip 👍🏻👍🏻

    • @pioni2
      @pioni2 7 лет назад +3

      Weather in Finland isn't actually very cold at the moment. Anyway, one way of ruining electronics is using them out in the cold (the colder, the worse) and then taking them immediately out when you get back inside. The condensed water will get inside weather sealings, and that will either kill the camera when you turn it on when still wet or slowly due to corrosion. It's better to have it slowly warm up inside a sealed bag and then get it out to let the remaining moisture dry. I'm using zip bags after getting back inside from photographing at -30 C, but at -10 C or above I just don't care, the camera bag will do. :) I'm also using reusable silica gel packs inside my camera bag.
      Apple and other phone manufacturers tried to wiggle out of their responsibilities by defining "normal" phone use to above 0 C. Since it's perfectly normal to have temperatures below -30 C, phones should still work and if they don't, there's the mandatory 2-year warranty for that. My Sony a7R has 5-year warranty, and it has been repaired 3-4 times due to low temperatures and poor quality (my last Sony). I'm using Leica M240 more than my M9 during the winter just because it's claimed to be weather resistant (no camera really is). The lenses can get mould due to moisture, and the electronics will get their part of the moisture no matter how well the sealings are made.
      The problem of condensation is most easily demonstrated by your eyeglasses when you get back inside. If you don't see anything for 1-3 minutes, expect to get your camera equally wet.

      Corentin Harbelot -20C today here in Mikkeli, Finland.I just ordered my Leica Q. Won't hesitate using it even if it is -30C outside. As long as I put my camera in my bag after a shoot outside and let it stay there, say... overnight. The same procedure for over past 30 years. Have never had any problems with any camera. And believe me, the cold spells Finland gets from Siperia every now and then are actually meant for polar bears.

      Not at all outdated. I don't expect them to update the Q for another year or two, three maybe.
      One could suspect they would come out with a 50mm Leica Q, but not yet.

      Quite some difference in handling, but the Leica Q is very similar to the Leica M 240 image results when using a 28/1.4 Summilux lens on the Leica M 240.

    I've heard that Panasonic worked on the Q...somewhat like the way minolta worked on the R Leicas. Is the quality diminished in that sense? Is the 28mm fixed lens of very good quality? Curious.

    • @MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard
      @MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard  7 лет назад

      I haven't heard that from any reliable source. Leica and Panasonic have worked on the D-Lux and other models that exists as both Leica and Panasonic versions (just as the models they made with Minolta in the 1980's was available both as Minolta and Leica versions)

  • @stuartmeador8993

    Think about the 'absolute' focal length of a camera lens... just for this thought process....so:
    a 28mm lens is effectively 28mm away from the film plane,
    a 35mm lens is 35mm away from the film plane (sensor).
    Similarly a 50mm is 50mm away and so-on....
    If one were to wish to view the same viewing perspecitve as seen by the particular lens, one would have to place the eye at that distance from the image as formed by the lens at that focal distance.
    To continue.... a person would have to view an image from 28mm distance if it were shot with a 28mm lens.... very impractical...double the size of the image and one could double the viewing distance and recover the same viewing angle at 56mm... double it again to and you could view it from 112 mm and see the same view... linear math..not complicated.. Why is this important? The lens records the various items in the image at a particular perspective with relation to each other .... only at the exact angle which the particular lens covers does this view get reconstructed to the eye in the full blossom of the original perspective. Upon study, this exact angle gives an extra realness to the image.. almost a 3-D effect to the viewer.
    One might ask 'what about 1/2 frame, full frame, medium format?', etc.... It doesn't change the true perspective viewing distance...although it does predict an optimum maximum image size for any given viewing distance. if the lens is 28mm then the optimum angle is that of a 28mm lens... So... What distance could one view an image made by a 28mm lens on a 1.5 inch x 1 inch inch (film) (sensor)? A 24 inch x 16 inch image on a monitor would be viewed at an optimum distance of (28mm x 16 = 448 mm) (17 inches). That is about where most of us place our eyeballs when viewing a 24 inch monitor... thus images made with a 28mm lens 'accidentally' look extra nice (in true perspective) and fill the screen at a typical viewing distance.
    Well, what difference would there be if the same camera had a 50mm lens to make the image? The true perspective for 17' viewing distance and a 50mm lens would require an image of about 13.5 x 9 inches (448mm / 50mm + 9x magnification). True perspective from 17 inches for an original image size of a 1.5 inch x 1 inch for a 35mm lens would be a 19 inch x 13.5 inch (448 / 35 = 11.7 magnification) image.
    Many Leica afficinados have been debating the Leica Q and the use of a 28mm lens on the camera....I believe it is no coincidence that the viewing distance for true perspective is the same as the current typical viewing distance for many popular monitors creating extra 'pop' in the displayed pictures.... also the true perspective can be acheived from a Leica Q image printed to about 8 inch x 12 in when viewed from about 9 inches....a typical close up distance for human vision.
    A topic such as this is often passed over because there is 'math' involved.... sorry... the true perspective 'pop' is a reality and can be predicted with simple information. As photographers and artists, it one tool we can use to good effect and enhance the viewability of our images.

      I get this "pop" on every good lens (like the Summilux Series) no matter how big the image is or what focal length it was shot at. I think you are making this bigger than it actually is.

    • @stuartmeador8993
      @stuartmeador8993 7 лет назад

      no argument with the 'good' lens use to get a pop..I see this more with prints than with a screened image.

      ran across this years ago when I got my new leica m2 and have using it ever since... I would make a print usually in the 8x10 to 16x20 or larger size and then have several persons view it as i moved near and farther from them till they said 'pop'... almost everyone came to the same 'pop' distance... and the 'pop' distance was always very close to that which was predicted by the magnification calculations...
