As someone who was recently in Wetzlar Germany and was able to be given a tour of the Leica premises, I would vote for purchasing the Leica Q. I spoke at length with the camera expert and this was the result of all the things I wanted in a camera. The Leica Q.
I tried both the RX1 RII and the Leica Q. While the specs look almost equal with the Sony edging out the Leica, shooting both cameras for me was like night and day. The Leica is so simple to shoot with, all the dials and controls are where they should be (for me), and the focus was incredibly quick. The Sony was nice but yet would hunt around a little bit more during focusing. And of course the files it created could really be described as "creamy". That is a beautiful camera.
fumeokid for me the RX1rii never hunts, not once. Its just a bit shower, still fast though. And of course smaller and cheaper. The Leica has a better evf and a focal length better suited for street imo.
If someone put a gun to my head and told me I had to buy the Leica Q or the Sony high end P&S, I would pay the extra $1K for the Leica 😀. I like the way you showed why the Leica Q is a great deal on a lens with the camera thrown in for free. Too bad it is affixed.
Great video. 3:45 - 3:53 👍🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 I wish EVERY Leica reviewer made this disclaimer. Besides "junk" doesn't last for 135 years. I get so frustrated when some people devalue something just because it's out of their price point. Especially if they have never used a Leica. I've never been a fan of people who pass judgment before they experience it.
You sure get what you pay for with this. Such a camera I can tell not just for the image quality but sheer experience, makes for a fun photography experience, something I think is rare with cheaper options
I got a good deal on a mint used Leica Q and couldn't be happier. I took it on a trip to Europe along with a Fuji X-T2. The Q was in my hand 90% of the time. Its a superb camera and does what it does well. Build quality is amazing. I will disagree with Mattias about the Thumbs Up, however... it feels way better in the hand with the Thumbs Up.
Маркус Same here, used it alongside a Fuji X-T20. The Fuji rarely made it out of the bag. I used the thumbs up for a while but its much better imo when you leave it off. Less force needed to hold it. But it all depends one once hands and preferences, no right or wrong.
Mattias You're right, there's no right or wrong answer in regards to Thumbs Up or not. I just like the ergonomics of it with the additional Leica Q hand grip. For me it's like wearing a glove that takes pictures. It just fits. The Fuji is a great system, but just based on the Q I'm sold on Leica. I'd love to get a used M or something. Throw a summicron on the front. The DNG files straight of the camera are far superior to the Fuji RAF files... at least using Capture One. Perhaps other RAW processors do better.
I think that the Q and the Q2 are always worth their price. Considering that the Q2 is weather resistant and you get a nearly twice as high resolution.
Eric Rossi There is no "need" to upgrade. Fuji makes great cameras, I still love my X-Pro2. But imo you can't really compare them like that. The M8, T, X are all cheaper than Fujis. So Leica is an affordable Leica :)
Jonathan Ellard No camera in the world is better than another camera. Its all down to the user. I love my Fuji but I understand that its not perfect and for many its down right unusable, depending on their needs.
It all depends what kind of shooting you do. There is a huge difference IMHO in a full frame and the Fuji. But if you need different focal lengths you should probably stay with the Fuji. Also you can get a used RX1 for about $1000. Granted it is missing a lot of things this one has but it does have an amazing 35mm lens and great IQ and low light capabilities. If I were upgrading from a XPro2 i'd get a used a7rii if I wanted various focal lengths. You can get a used one for about 2k and a great 28mm FE lends for just over $300. But if you want to explore the Leica mystique by all means get the Q. It is an amazing piece of technology. Great street camera.
Hello Mattias! I have a Q 2 since June and used it a few times. When it comes to Streetphotography or Portraiture I frankly have Problems with the Autofocus, especially with a wide open Aperture. First I tried "Face Detection", which didn't work consistently and in worst Case the Camera operates in "Multifield-Focussing". 1-Field-Metering didn't make the Job either, so I work in most of the Cases with Spot-Focus. What am I doing wrong or have to consider? Thank you for your answer in advance and Best Regards!
Ha ha, that's awesome. Im a bit addicted to take photos of GP sitting on it. Its just great light and the colors and patterns looks nice behind her. So my guess is you will see more of it in upcoming reviews :)
Hi Mattias, hope you still answer questions...so, when you are not using Auto-focus, does the Q not over-ride your over-ride? meaning that when a person does his own focusing, that is where we want to focus...and then it's perfect after that..... I have a T and a few lenses, 18-56 and 11-23, I can trade it all in for a Q..... or move up to a TL2.... I know, a real world problem!! any suggestions...
Thanks Mattias, I, like you, have limited "resourses" unless since that video you've become RICHER, for More photography toys.... I have always love being able to change lenses while on vacation in ITALY I had the Absolute pleasure of shooting with the T and 2 lenses, although I LOVED shooting WIDE... and always f8.0 or f11 since I know at that f-stop all in view is in focus...I love the Leica's for their BEAUTY and STYLE, I don't have to worry about its capabilities as a Camera, my question was TL2, CL or the Q in titanium? is changing lenses something I'd Learn to forget if I chose the Q ? The haters will always HATE, they've never had the pleasure of being part of their subject.... My Photos all have Monikers......
When are they going to give you a Leica Q2 to play with? I am eyeing it up. I am more of a fan of the 35mm focal length - but with the extra resolution it's just a lot more flexible and much more value for such a cheap Leica.
@@gearreallydoesntmatter Yeah.... if only! I hope you are playing with some fun cameras... love the channel and the way you talk about cameras. You almost give each one a soul :)
I just returned a Q I bought about a month ago. The build quality was great, the camera felt wonderful in my hands. The UI was very good too, although I think requiring one to press the Fn button twice (once to select the option you want to change, the second to actually access it, is a pain. The camera looks fantastic, makes me feel like I'm a REAL photographer. The only problems I had were: One, 28mm is just a bit too wide for me, I don't normally get so close to things and two, for whatever reason, I just didn't like the RAW output. In particular, the dynamic range seemed lacking, any higher contrast scenes would result in muddy shadows which I couldn't lift in PP. Maybe it was my sample, maybe me, but I much preferred the output of an RX1RII I tried. I know the Q lens is stellar and I'm sure others really like the output, but the Q's output just didn't suit me. I wish I could have kept it.
Norman Kleinberg Ive had both. The Q has better DR imo and is also much faster to operate and use. But the rx1rii has a nice tilt screen. Personally I prefer 28mm.
This could be the perfect companion to my GR III. I'm going to offer a trade of my Pentax KP & lenses on a few photo forums and see if I get any nibbles....
Hi Mattias! Great Review! Thanks for that! To be honest, I have a "Problem" to make a Decision and perhaps you can help me I really want a Leica Q, because I want it! *Full Stop* Had the Q2 in my hands and it was nice. I mainly shoot Street and asked myself, do I need the Sealing and the bigger Sensor with regard to the Price Difference?! How do I want to deal the huge Data, when it comes to Computer-Power and Storage-Capacity?! - When it comes to the Difference between Q and Q-P I see no arguments in terms of technical reasons rather than optical ones. Perhaps you can answer my questions!? Cheers from Germany!
I would let price be the deciding factor. Good deals on used Q's are starting to pop up and it's still a fantastic camera with an incredible lens. The resolution is plentiful.
Nice video, I currently own an X, and am saving for a Q - although I suspect the Q2 might be out before I get to the full amount - either way I will get there, and own one of these beasts, or its successor in the next few years. In the meantime I will continue to love the X, which is also an excellent bit of Leica kit, and more affordable to those of us without deep pockets.
Mr. Burling, great photos! May I ask if you think it is a good or bad time to buy Q? I want it, but I am only concerned it is already 3 yrs old. I am completely amateur and does photography for hobby only. I keep my camera for a long long time: been using a canon 30d with 24-105mm for more than 10 years.
A P why don't you go onto facebook, there are a few for sale used, if you're in the states, 3,250 US... its the Leica Cameras For Sale.... don't buy the one I have my eyes on though.....
If this was 35mm or 50mm I'd snap it up in a heartbeat. Unfortunately I find 28mm far too wide especially for street photography. I don't like getting too close to people's faces, you see :)
TJ Smith I prefer 28mm for street photography. Easier to focus. And a high resolution 28mm can always be cropped to 35 or 50. But not the other way around. Also a 35 or 50 Leica Q doesn't make much sense since it would cost to close to an M + lens. And that would loose customers. The 28mm is $6000 so not many could afford it before the Q.
Mattias Burling luckily I bought an M9 on your recommendation with a 50mm zeiss lens. Absolutely loving it. 50mm is definitely my perfect focal length. If its not wide enough i use my Google pixel :)
hey, do you have any recommendations for where to get the m6 or what price is good for a m6 ? Always wanted one but the price on eBay for good conditions are all biding slightly around $2000 which is kind of lame.
I am going to have to stop watching your reviews as I am going to go broke. I watched your Leica T "5 reasons" video and now happily own one. I have also been eyeing the Leica Q. Grrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!
Good review as usual. I like your RUclips channel as well as your Instagram. From your RUclips channel I can see that you are tends to street photography and most of your cameras that you have been reviewed categorizes under a street camera. But you did not review one of the most popular in this field which is Olympus Pen F. I really want you to have a look of this camera.
I actually own two Leica Summicron-R E55 f/2 primes, the 35 & 50mm. Add a focal reducer and you can go experience the Leica fun with any camera body (best part: you get schtuff like sensor stabilization and 4K video!).
Mattias Burling thank you Matias. I bought a Sony A7 after watching your video about full frame cameras. I think I did the right choice. Camera will arrive in a couple of days
I always like to try new things and develop as a photographer. Recently I was at a week long gig following the veterinarians during the European Equine Championships. And now I want to explore sports photography. So expensive lens and/or DSLR purchase coming up.
Mattias Burling so, if you buy used and sell afterwards you don't lose anything I guess? Anyway: Amazing pictures and amazing review style, probably the best photography channel on my subscription list. Also love your Swedish accent, reminds me of my three years living there :)
Hi, wonderful video, thanks! It shouldn't actually be the same lens as it is f/1.7 while the one you show on BH is an f/1.4 (let alone autofocus). The f-stop difference would somehow make the price difference understandable. Apart from that, I honestly dislike this marketing strategy to name f/1.7 lenses as 'summilux', as this was historically prerogative of the f/1.4s (second time it happens, the first time with the pana-leica 15mm f/1.7 for micro-four-thirds). Amazing camera anyway, enjoy!
Apparently it is very good camera and exceptional technology, I would like to know the opinion of a professional, or someone who works in photography, whether social, sports, or documentary photography.
That camera is too goddamn expensive for what it does, go with Ricoh Gr and with the savings buy yourself a trip to south east asia and shoot amazing photos
bottom line: we both agree not to buy the leica and with the money left buy yourself a trip to a location (great photos = great location (not a great camera)
you can borrow my Ricoh GR LOL . Jokes aside, i looked into the Q once, i considered shelling out the 4k for it but reason prevailed. It is just too expensive, but if you have the surplus cash for it (and no wife and children) then what the hell just get the thing
I wish they were still selling new Qs. I hate having to buy a used one online. I just have no trust in people selling theirs. Lots of dishonesty as i don't really know if something is wrong with the Q. I would love the Q2, but too pricey. Also some people like the Q more than Q2.
They do sell new, but it's the Q-P. Always buy used when you can, that's my tip. I've seen used Qs in store with warranty as low as $1800 do just keep an eye out.
I never had any camera without my smartphone. & yet I watched every one of your videos on youtube. I just wish that I could buy a decent used camera here in Bangladesh. But people here at least are obsessed with DSLRs & the used camera market barely has any compacts & even when they do; they are close to retail price! we don't have eBay here(almost no camera ships to my country from ebay or amazon) This is the only thing in the world that makes me feel bad from belonging from a third world country :-(
👍🏼 Great video! I love this camera, play around it at Leica Store Miami, much lighter than MP240 and M10. And the almost silent shutter makes it great for street or studio shooting!
Mattias Burling i know man....im just a jealous loser.... Leica is soon opening their first shop here in india in delhi... I'll definitely try out this camera....
Shalini Gupta, how was your experience with Leica Q and M10 ? ... I m from Ahmedabad and planning to get one of those. Also inform whenever M10-P arrives here. Thanks, regards
The EVF is the worst thing of this camera. The most cheaper cameras like Panasonic, Olympus or Fuji has more better EVF. The reason I love the Q is just the lens and photos quality (only RAW).
@@gearreallydoesntmatter Well that’s not just my one opinion. In online forums, many people complain that EVF is too bright and only suitable for framing. With my other camera Lumix G9, I can also control exposure compensation through EVF and know how the photo will look. It is not possible to do this with Q. Even the brightness of the LCD screen does not match the EVF.
@@gearreallydoesntmatter OK, let's look on Lumix GX8 from 2015. In any way the EVF on Leica Q is too bright that you can take right decision about exposure compensation, especially in sunny day.
I hate Leica and their stupid high pricing, but 4 grand for Leica Q isn't too bad. I do think it's still overpriced by a grand(compared to RX1Rii) but for a Leica it's somewhat reasonable. Still, not for me though.
As with any camera if you buy when its first released you'll pay an arm and a leg for it, same as a car. I've just picked up a lecia Q, almost mint condition for £1500. I also have a Fuji x100s which is my go anywhere camera as it fits in a coat pocket, the Lecia is a bit to Bulky for that. But it's full Frame so needs a Big Bulky lens, No way around that issue. The Lecia Really comes into play when light levels drop off and you don't wish to use a flash. Both fantastic Street, people camera's. No good if you wish to take a close up of the moon or wildlife at a distance, then you are better off with a canon 7d and a 150-500mm lens. All depends on what you wish to photograph. Neither the Lecia or Fuji are landscape camera's, neither has a wide enough angle lens, Doable if you aren't wanting super wide.
Clacking Computer Instead of an x100f I rather buy a GRii and a plane ticket to an amazing city. Or instead of the GRii, a DP1 and a plane ticket to an amazing city. I know twice the cost of a used X100f is a lot, but as always you get what you pay for.
I had x100F (returned it after a week as it didn't make me happy), have GR 2 now which is great for the money and have tried Leica Q in store and it just blows your mind in both picture and build quality; it slick comparing fiat vs mercedes top class; not sure if comparison makes sense

I'm surprised you haven't tested the sony rx1. Wonder how it compares to the Q.
+wonspec I have tested it :)
Looking forward to watching the vid review for it. Keep up the great work.
wonspec its up :)
Arrrrrr !! Always such lovely images !!
Nice video Mattias. How are the files and high ISO compared to Fuji?
Jan Jespersen more info in the highlights and a little better at ISO.
the pooch makes any camera image, high quality!
How much with this camera?
hey, do you have any recommendations for where to get the m6 or what price is good for a m6 ? Always wanted one but the price on eBay for good conditions are all biding slightly around $2000 which is kind of lame.
I just can't get excited about a camera that costs more than my car. I'd feel guilty just carrying the thing around. But as always I love your videos!
Phil Hodges its not that expensive. But I get your point.
I am going to have to stop watching your reviews as I am going to go broke. I watched your Leica T "5 reasons" video and now happily own one. I have also been eyeing the Leica Q. Grrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!
Stay with the T. It is a legend :)
Mattias, I have been considering for a while changing my Fuji X-100 F for the Q. Is it worth it?
Irene DP It totally depends on you and what you look for in a camera.
Tack för tips!! Som vanligt bra video och tack för tips om Thorsten!
I have had that camera. Its nice but I preferred the E-P5.
I have a video where I talk about it, "Top 5 Affordable Cameras".
what do you think of the leica x type 113?? have you used it?
Lewis O No Ive never used it.
Yes! Keep telling people to buy the Leica Q.
It will make them have to sell their old gear, like an E-M5 with Voigtländer 17.5mm f/0.95 to me! :P
I actually own two Leica Summicron-R E55 f/2 primes, the 35 & 50mm.
Add a focal reducer and you can go experience the Leica fun with any camera body (best part: you get schtuff like sensor stabilization and 4K video!).
Question is how much the speedbooster interferes with the Leica look. Would be nice if someone tested that.
ASPH is not full frame isn't it?
Roberto Herrera Peres No that is smaller than full frame but bigger than APS-C. The Leica Q is full frame.
The only APS-H Leica I know of is the M8.
Mattias Burling thank you Matias. I bought a Sony A7 after watching your video about full frame cameras. I think I did the right choice. Camera will arrive in a couple of days
Why didn't you keep it? ;)
Thanks, glad you enjoy the channel :)
Yes, I always buy used and rarely loose any big money. Sometimes there can actually be profit :)
Giorgio Talocci its only 1/2 stop between f1.4 and f1.7. Close enough imo.
Apparently it is very good camera and exceptional technology, I would like to know the opinion of a professional, or someone who works in photography, whether social, sports, or documentary photography.
I work with all of the above.
What will you review next?
Lane Feral Not sure but I have two cheap and forgotten cameras, a Sigma, a bag, an audio mixer and a spy cam in the pipe.
Love it. Great vid again man.
Damian Brown Thank you my friend :)
Ok nice camera but what to do if there is a dust spot on the sensor ? How to clean It? because there is no acces.
Since there is no access the risk is absolutely minimal. If it does happen you turn it in for a clean. Doesn't cost very much.
Mattias Burling ah okay!:-) good to know ! Thanks for the quick responds !
Good stuff!
That camera is too goddamn expensive for what it does, go with Ricoh Gr and with the savings buy yourself a trip to south east asia and shoot amazing photos
The Cantrell Project The price is justified imo. You know I love the Ricoh GRii. But as always, you get what you pay for.
And also, dont buy the Ricoh. Buy a used DP1 and use the saving for a week long trip to the sun and take amazing shots ;)
bottom line: we both agree not to buy the leica and with the money left buy yourself a trip to a location (great photos = great location (not a great camera)
Nah, I would buy the Leica. Otherwise I don't have a camera for my trip :)
you can borrow my Ricoh GR LOL . Jokes aside, i looked into the Q once, i considered shelling out the 4k for it but reason prevailed. It is just too expensive, but if you have the surplus cash for it (and no wife and children) then what the hell just get the thing
Stunning photos!
Mattias Burling hi Matt. Are you saying to buy it in an actual Leica store or did you mean online from any reputable etailer like BHPhoto or Adorama?
A dealer.
I never had any camera without my smartphone.
& yet I watched every one of your videos on youtube.
I just wish that I could buy a decent used camera here in Bangladesh.
But people here at least are obsessed with DSLRs & the used camera market barely has any compacts & even when they do; they are close to retail price!
we don't have eBay here(almost no camera ships to my country from ebay or amazon)
This is the only thing in the world that makes me feel bad from belonging from a third world country :-(
Tawhid Khan But a DSLR has its percs over mirrorless. So it could be nice to have :)
I love this puppy of a camera..... only thing I missing is weather sealing..
👍🏼 Great video! I love this camera, play around it at Leica Store Miami, much lighter than MP240 and M10. And the almost silent shutter makes it great for street or studio shooting!
Yeah its quiet as a mouse with that leafshutter. Great sync speed as well.
If it had a 35mm i would have bought it for sure
photomorti noooo ;)
well my xt1 will have to do or xpro 2 ...too much money for a camera
David Parks my X-Pro2 + lens cost me more :)
@@gearreallydoesntmatter More than the Leica??? Please explan
Great video, keep it up.
Yo compared the 1.4 and 1.7 lens prices? Am I missing something?
Eric Downs Yes. There is no 28/1.7 M-mount.
Mattias Burling Were you just making a comparison of the manufacturer? Saying the lens manufacture is really good so even this "kit" lens is good?
Eric Downs Im pointing out how cheap this camera is because the closest comparable lens that is just as good is $6000 for the lens alone.
Okay I understand. Thank you!
Yay new video
Very good review
Buy with you heart
This camera costs almost 6000$ in Japan.
Then I wont move there ;)
Leica is the only brand that got this kind of treatment, everything else is cheaper to buy in Japan than other countries. Also Hasselblad too.
From what Ive seen everything is more expensive in Japan. But that's compared to Sweden.
Love these videos=)
I so want to get this!!! Hopefully by next year will become a reality! 💵
Let me guess.
1. Red dot

Btw amazing photos and that macro depth scale transition is bloody cool.
Shalini Gupta Leica isn't about brand. When you use one you will get it :)
Mattias Burling i know man....im just a jealous loser.... Leica is soon opening their first shop here in india in delhi... I'll definitely try out this camera....
Shalini Gupta just be careful. Its a gateway drug ;)
that is nothing jellies or unknowledgeable people say when they do not understand build quality and picture quality
Shalini Gupta, how was your experience with Leica Q and M10 ? ... I m from Ahmedabad and planning to get one of those. Also inform whenever M10-P arrives here. Thanks, regards
I agree totally!
How much ?
Second! Great video.
The EVF is the worst thing of this camera. The most cheaper cameras like Panasonic, Olympus or Fuji has more better EVF.
The reason I love the Q is just the lens and photos quality (only RAW).
Not really true. The EVF is excellent even by today's standards and absolutely kills anything Fuji and Olympus produced at the time.
The G9 is two years younger. You can see the exposure in the Q.
@@gearreallydoesntmatter OK, let's look on Lumix GX8 from 2015. In any way the EVF on Leica Q is too bright that you can take right decision about exposure compensation, especially in sunny day.
Don't agree.
Really nice Video
I hate Leica and their stupid high pricing, but 4 grand for Leica Q isn't too bad. I do think it's still overpriced by a grand(compared to RX1Rii) but for a Leica it's somewhat reasonable.
Still, not for me though.
John Kang My Leica Q and RX1rii cost about the same used. Only a few hundred separating them.
За такие деньги можно купить приору с сабвуфером
I need to know where I can get a Leica for the price of 2 used x100f.. because the Leicas I've seen are way more expensive than that 😂
I bought it in Swedens largest camera shop. So it wasn't hard to find. I also see them from time to time on classifieds.
Oh! Man!
None of them were for the leica q
None of what?
Yeah no I'd rather buy a X100F and a plane ticket to an amazing city
Clacking Computer Instead of an x100f I rather buy a GRii and a plane ticket to an amazing city. Or instead of the GRii, a DP1 and a plane ticket to an amazing city.
I know twice the cost of a used X100f is a lot, but as always you get what you pay for.
I had x100F (returned it after a week as it didn't make me happy), have GR 2 now which is great for the money and have tried Leica Q in store and it just blows your mind in both picture and build quality; it slick comparing fiat vs mercedes top class; not sure if comparison makes sense
$4,250; maybe someday...
More like $3000 used but in a store with warranty. Still a lot of money though.
Haha nice coop Sack wär schwitzer isch versteith das 🤣👌
