Always remember reading in an interview, how Gary was a little shy and embarrassed to sing his songs in front of the band. He wrote them, Tony Hadley sang them. This version is one we are privileged to hear, as are all played on an acoustic guitar. Because that is how Spandau Ballet heard them first.
True was a UK Number 1 single for four weeks in April/May 1983. It also reached Number 1 in Ireland and Canada and became Spandau Ballet's only major US hit single, peaking at Number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100.
He never shared the windfall from the songs he wrote but Hadley and the band made it a song. Sadly this is so TRUELY only great because of the production and the input from Hadley primarily and the combined rhythm and even the Sax solo made it a hit. Can you honestly say this would even had airplay in this form...No!
not sang the same way, but sang beautifully, as well. where tony hadley's singing sends you to heights, gary kemp's cradles you like warmth... love them both!
Great singing wow! he is a great song writer! And he can sing too! Don't forget all the hits he wrote by himself for Spandau ballet! He is a great artist. ..Tony Hadley has a great voice too.Golden duo! I miss the 80's so much
Such a shame I grew up in the wrong decade, I love alot of music 80s and films, I'd love to have had the opportunity to have witnessed bands like Duran and spandu at the height of fame, so you could call me a young fan.
Wow! This is great! I really enjoyed listening to Gary Kemp performing his own version of this 80’s classic. I wouldn’t ever demean Tony Hadley’s lead vocal on the original version, as he definitely had that silky-smooth “crooner” thing going on; and there’s no doubt that his vocal certainly played a part in the ultimate success of “True”… But in THIS version, Gary’s voice and performance brings so much more of a “blue-eyed soul” vibe to it than Hadley’s vocal did in the original; and for me, it puts the song in a whole new light. After hearing this version, I can’t help but wonder if Gary, when he was writing the song, perhaps heard the vocal as being more this way, with more of this soulful kind of vibe, than how Hadley ultimately ended up singing on the hit version that people are now most familiar with… Thanks for posting this, I really enjoyed it! 🙏
But Hadley did not just sing ON the HIT version..It BECAME a HIT BECAUSE of the way he sang it and the band played it!!!. These initial comments are what family and friends and not what realistic honest critiques are. Sheesh...be real folks.
It was probably ment to be sung in the way Hadley sang it. Why? Because Hadley had nothing to say about the way he’d sing the songs. Kemp determined everything.
Listen ....he wrote it...able to sing it ...but needs band to hit charts....I think he deserves the coin.....although I think bands should be paid equally.... But would Tony Hadley be famous w out gary ?
I want the truth to be said...... with a thrill in my head and a pill on my tongue.. Why do l find it hard to write the next line.... I want the truth to be said.....

oh BOO....you can't pull off the "sound" that made what you wrote a hit...sure, you wrote it but part of the song was the delivery by the rest of the former band...WHATEVER!...

This man wrote one of the most beautiful songs ever! Gary you can sing this baby any way you like!

Not with this guy at the helm it didn't.
Great song, great performance and a wonderful Gibson Guitar. Keep music live.
He did so well!! His version is calming to listen to.

love the huskiness in his voice ..love this song ... enduring ...
He gave it kind of country vibe. LOVE It!
Incredible. His playing is great and it's a hard song to sing and play at the same time. That J200 is a beauty.
The singer, the song and the guitar - full of history and memories. Love them all.
i really love this acoustic version of the song... the guitar riff of the song.
Spandau Ballet is wondeful the music of the 80,s
Oh, this got to my soul. Unfortunetly, thats much true.
not sang the same way, but sang beautifully, as well. where tony hadley's singing sends you to heights, gary kemp's cradles you like warmth... love them both!
Edgar Piedmont well said!
I love Gary's raspy vocals, Tony's vocals are more close to Frank Sinatra.

One of the most underestimated songwriters👍
HUH? a malapropism if ever there was one...How do you underestimate a songwriter.......So now I'm certain these are BOT retorts.

He obviously wrote those songs for Tony. His vocals are made to sing his material. He has the right to perform it anyway.
Nice rendition.
I think this is a lovely version.
Cazz Marie I totally agree. 😊
Ficou lindo true com o lindo Gary Kemp

I liked it . . Love him !
Man some of you people are crazy. Love this version.

But would Tony Hadley be famous w out gary ?
I always see him in my head murdering some poor punter in the most heinous way imaginable. Such a classic tune.

Beautiful Men e música Gary Kemp 🇧🇷💞 Brazil loy y you e spandau ballet
Caspita, who aged!
Go ahead Gary fair play to you!
Prefiero a Tony, por siempre. Maravilloso Tony Hadley❤
eep music live
Everyone has their talent ... writing, production, playing amazing ... singing is a no ...leave that to Hadley
Probably not a good key for him
This rendition proves the song is nothing without Tony Hadley's voice.
So true (no pun intended). it's a make or break situation.
Different stroke. Still a musical wonder.
spandau ballet isn't high brow, it's now selling washing powder
Bravo Maestro !_! The vocals weren't nearly as good as the guitar playing But, the feeling was true -_-
He didn't warm up his voice at all you can tell. As a listener when this happens I feel disrespected.
Without Tony Hadley the song loses incredible value.
Unbelievable!!!
bad singer erhhhhhhhh great song but erhhhhh his voice
what happened to sound?
Eh? It sounded pretty good in Barcelona!!
can't hear anything i mean
fukin talent ...end of

i thought it was quite good...
GARY YOU JUST STICK TO PLAYING THE GUITAR . . . . . . . . .
Hahahahaha yes
Just think what Jesus Christ would be doing with a whip in His hand.
someone like him, believe in God? I have always found it false!
Beautiful guitar sound but I think Garry should leave the singing to Tony!
His singing was great.
Tony has left
Debbie Crossley well the man did write this.. I think his entitled to song it and represent the bands name 😂
Debbie Crossley what? I beg to differ; He’s got a authentic grindy voice.
Debbie Crossley you should leave the listening to people with better taste.
stick to advertising sofas mate
Dislike
So talented and good looking.
I hate him!
Bad guitar
Yawn
You sound like you are dying!
At least you are an original, and nobody can top that!
oh BOO....you can't pull off the "sound" that made what you wrote a hit...sure, you wrote it but part of the song was the delivery by the rest of the former band...WHATEVER!...
Stick to the guitar playing, Gary! This really doesn’t make sense...
