  • Getting a 11L Defender engine up to original specs again. Up to 50 labour hours are involved in getting an engine in this shape. Painstaking cleaning, sand blasting, painting and assembling error free - not always easy but definetly worth while. Do it right once and you have a trouble free engine for years.

    I had one in my landrover 110, replacing my turbo diesel at 140.000km. Garage maintained, no problems, good performance, 10l/100km, 1l oil/5000km, and sold the car at 460.000 km

      yeah these are incredible robust engines with little maintenance. And fuel economy is really good. Makes you question these days where the supposed evolution is in engine technology

      Did you ever have to do a head gasket?

    • @Roverlon96
      @Roverlon96 6 месяцев назад

      @@built2last409my 200 has now round about 300.000km and the head gasket is blown. I‘m changing it at the moment, i think 300.000km is typical for blown head gaskets on these engines, as i heard from others changing theirs at thise mileage

    Great Video. I have heard that its possible to put the block in a massive ultrasonic cleaning bath to get rid of internal rust in waterways 😮

      should be possible if you have the proper equipment or pay someone to do it. When the engine is apart i clean everything as good as possible with compressed air etc. The after the engine is assembled i run every engine without a thermostat and use a citric acid cleaner from Mercedes to get rid of the rest of the rust and debris. Rinse with fresh water a couple of times, drain to the last drop and then use distilled water with proper coolant

    Did you use a composite or a MLS head gasket? Been reading about issues with the 200tdi and the MLS gaskets. Mike at Brittanica Restorations just put a video out about how the MLS gasket is actually made for the 300tdi and some subtle differences may be making some issues.

      on the 200's i always use composite head gasket from elring. on the 300 TDI IF and only IF both mating faces i.e head and block are skimmed and ablosutely straight i use a metal Gasket from Victor Reinz.

    On the old series engines......re the Tee Seals.....landrover showed in the manual.....a tool to help guide in the seal.....a sort of wedge shaped idea....on a 45deg angle.....would think the same idea would work on the TDI engine....looks the same idea.
    We call it the rear crank seal.

    • @heritagesteel1976
      @heritagesteel1976  9 месяцев назад

      hi,
      the rear crank seal is easy, the T seals are the problem. There is really no "right" way. I found my my own way and still with a sucess rate of only around 85%...

      It was the Tee seals I was meaning.....landrover have a tool for them of the Series engine....the still look the same tee idea.@@heritagesteel1976

    thanks for the great video. What do you use? Min.4 ? XXXXX 3400??? Thank you!

    • @heritagesteel1976
      @heritagesteel1976  11 месяцев назад

      a sealing compound. You can use Hylomar 3400 or normal gasket sealant, aka silicone. Something that holds the strips in place and prevents oil leaks

    Dear, the previous owner put water in mine 200dti. How can I clean it from rust? I mean while the engine is on the car.
    Thank you!

      Oh, and please be safe and recover fast!

    • @heritagesteel1976
      @heritagesteel1976  Год назад +1

      first of all drain all the water. If you want to clean it with engine in the car there are products on the market that will clena most of the rust. You then have to flush the coolant system 3/4 times with clean tap water, drain agian and then pour deminerilzed water with coolant.

      @@heritagesteel1976 thank you dear! i will do that as you say. I saw a printed manuals in some of your videos. Can you advise me, where to find an electronic version of part list and service manual for 1993 200tdi? I only found these documents for 1995 and later models..
      Thank you so much!
