If Kap and teammates would have protested by kneeling for 35 seconds of play clock on the first offensive play of the game, with all eyes and cameras on him and his message, there wouldn't be any need to have to explain. Instead, he chose to protest on top of a tradition and symbolic gesture that's deeply personal to a lot of Americans, putting him in a position to have to explain, as well as putting those who would otherwise support him in an awkward position of having to choose to support Kap or America. Would have been much more powerful to see all 22 men on the field kneeling on the first snap of the game. Not only would it have been more visible, but it wouldn't have put anyone in a position of conflicting emotions about the flag vs social injustice.
Anyone who thinks you have to chose between support of the flag and support of social injustice needs to read the bill of rights and the constitution. To support the flag you have to confront social injustice or you are at best disingenious.
As a black man who has long admired B. Frank this is one more reason to. There's a reason why he's the only non-president on a U.S. money note. And the fact they put him above all the other guys by putting him on the $100 bill tells it all
@Bob Ellison It wouldn't matter how Kaepernick protested, people against any and all police reform would have found a way to minimize it. There are just some people who will never get it and you shouldn't waste your time trying to appease people you can't win over.

My favorite aspect of Pat's show is the perspective he gives into the life of an NFL player.. This is another one of those videos, to me. Gaining some insight of what was going on in other teams locker rooms during that time. Thanks for the words, Pat.
This was a fantastic video Pat. I'm going to be celebrating my 18th year in the military this year. When Kap first started kneeling and before I had heard the reason why, I have no shame in admitting that my initial reaction was WTF? But after doing a little research, hearing him talk and more importantly LISTENING to what he was saying, my initial feeling dwindled and empathy grew. I respected and still do respect what he was doing, the msg he was trying to get through to people, and the fact that he stuck to his beliefs. I'll never understand his walk of life or other POC for that matter. But being raised the way my father raised me, and being in the military as long as I have been, I've learned that you should never react off of your first emotional response. Everyone deserves to not just be heard to but to be listened to.
Good job in reassessing and not going by a knee jerk, emotional reaction... HOWEVER😎- after reassessing, you should be able to see that kneeling is an act of disrespect to the flag-which represents the country. Meaning: Its not just that he'd like an improvement of race relations in the country-rather that this is a BAD country. Meaning: He doesnt have appreciation for the country and see the freedoms it provides, the opportunities this country gives, and how great this country is....because if he did, he would simply protest WITHOUT the DISRESPECTFUL part. He'd call for a protest in the right way, ( and right time and place, btw, and NOT during a football game in a football stadium ) make his point, and be more effective. ( Also, what takes away empathy toward the cause of Police brutality is that there are issues 1000 times more pressing for the Black community: Where is the talk and emphasis about the cultural issues Blacks face: schooling, 1 parent families, crime ...AND THATS NOT AMERICA'S FAULT ! ( and if Kap would tell you it is, then he really is disrespecting the USA ,isnt he?)
Russ Thacher, As a Canadian, I appreciate and thank you for your service. US Service men and women have done as much to keep my country safe as our own military did. Your strength let our Forces do their part in UN peacekeeping, which is something I’m particularly proud of.
The first I ever heard of Pat McAfee I was a student at Butler University in 2010 when he was arrested at 2:00 AM for jumping in the canal near campus lol... now one of my favorite podcasts! What a time to be alive
@Matty Jay prob not. I care about social injustice, I live in Minnesota myself so iv seen it first hand and grew up in the city over from Minneapolis, I'm a Very Proud man of What Our country is, it's not perfect I can tell you that, i think it's not right to treat anyone different. Like my Father said to me "Dont form an Opinion on someone based on there skin color, instead base it off the character of that person" But I see where Brees was going but he just did not say it right, or clarify his statement. I dont like disrespecting the flag. I see the message people try to send by doing it but in the end all it does Is hurt the country and were disrespecting all the man who fought to have that flag flown high in the wind. Iwo Jima. Civil war. Many men's blood has been spilled on, and for that flag. I just don't think that's the right way of going about any of it. There has to be a better way. But there deffinatly needs to be a equality greater than what's in place now, R.I.P George Floyd
As a black teacher living in New York, I would like to say thank for your eloquent and informed response. Hope you stay blessed and I will be sharing this video it was amazing 🙏♥️
People are told by MSM that this is a race issue, it's not, it's a class issue. 10 unarmed black people were killed by police last year, 19 unarmed white people were killed. The police are preying on the poor, not a race.
Pat the more I consciously listen to you, the more I like your arguments and how eloquently to spell it out for people to listen and empathize. If people still cant hear it, I dont think they agree to listen or even understand.
@Raymond Well, the flag is symbolism, him kneeling was showing his thoughts on the country. You can love this country and protest against it at the same time. The whole point of this video is that the "disrespect for the flag" schtick was just to avoid having the conversation. You can feel its disrespectful, but to have zero empathy for someone protesting seems rather unamerican to me.
So we can see grown men act like children over a debate that's been dead for 4 years? Yeah I've got better things to do with my time 😂 You can see most of that garbage on TV already.
Bro, it's only about "THEM" because it's always about "YOU"... If this was about the raping of women who would want to here the opinion of guys... if this was about genocide of a race no one would want to hear about the feelings of the other side... don't be ignorant like Drew. Like Shannon Sharpe said... if someone is drowning, I don't want to hear how great it is to be on land...
@@kimbowman1066 you are speaking as if police brutality only effects black people. Instead of making it about holding cops accountable, its been turned into a racial issue which only divides people.

He was told not to sit, correct. Don’t leave out he was told to kneel instead to show respect. Told by a veteran. Brees mentions his grand fathers fighting in WW2, which is why he takes so much pride in the flag and anthem, but forgets BLACK men fought in that war along side his grand fathers and came home to segregation. Many black men and women have fought for freedom in this country yet still live in fear as a black citizen. The flag is supposed to represent freedom yet black people can be killed by police and receive no justice. So what does the flag really represent? What is Brees really mad at? The “disrespecting the flag” argument is a cop out!
Brees has collected and donated tens of millions of dollars for charity, put in countless hours of his time and helped pull a city out of one of the worst tragedies of our time. He moved his family to one of the poorest parts of the country and continues to help the community, with a majority black population if that's the part that matters. Brees might not have given a perfect answer but for fucks sakes I can't believe how quickly people turn. There's not a fuckin chance that 10% the people calling him out right now would have moved their family to New Orleans during the middle of katrina-anarchy and tried to help total strangers rebuild their city.
1. What does any of this have to do with his comment this week? 2. Brees does not live in a poor neighborhood. Even if he wanted to, he couldn’t. Not all of New Orleans is poor lol
Dude Louisiana is majority white and he has helped some many people in Louisiana and so many others have helped. He was totally off on the players talking a knee, he made it about the flag, and it wasn't but some people will hear him about now say the same thing he said. It just changes the narrative about what the protests are really about.
Btw Dree Brees stays in one of the richest gated communities in the world, he can donate all of his money it still doesn't change the way people of color are being treated in this country
Let me tell you what I think and feel, as a retired Army Master Sergeant that did 25 years of service, deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan and other fun places. I am proud that my service, and the service of my brothers and sisters, has provided the protection for someone to be able to take a knee in protest. Plain and simple. Many of my buddies as well as myself do not take offense but rather are glad that it can happen. It’s not something I would do, but that’s ok because my opinions and beliefs are my own, and thankfully we are all allowed to have differing points of view. I think the people getting pissed off on the behalf of the military, is a lot over the top. Yes, thank you for thinking of us and respecting us, but realize that we fight and die for the Constitution and to protect it from all enemies, foreign and domestic. That’s what our oath says. Nothing about the flag, the President, the Congress, and not even about the citizens. Simply the Constitution. We have to obey the lawful orders given us by superior officers, but we fight and die to protect the rights afforded us as Americans by the Constitution. It would be so freaking hypocritical for a service member to tell someone they aren’t allowed to peacefully assemble and/or protest, speak freely, or anything of the sorts since thats the basis of our entire job. Basically all I’m saying is that any freaking conversation that involves “disrespect to the military” should be ended, and the actual issues regarding WHY the protests are going on needs to focused on. Not the little piss ant side arguments.
Thanks for your service. What is sad is political correctness and the fact that Drew Brees is being called racist and everything else because he feels different than someone else. Cancel culture is ridiculous and has to stop.
@@sadieblue9345 what is sad is racist people getting butt hurt when they're called out. being called a racist is not equal to being called the devil or being black in front of a cop. racism is a prejudice based on someones race. it is a problem of philosophy, and therefore relatively speaking, fairly simple to eradicate. don't get offended because you want to stay racist, just drop the damn belief! because thinking is hard, snap decisions are easy. There's no thought required to just go "I supprot da flag!!!!!"" while not realizing the right to peacefully protest is what the hell we were fighting for in the first place. You'll note the strongest voices on that front are the ones who never served btw.
@@chriscrowninshield4623 and yet, there you go expertly demonstrating the snap decisions of people on the opposite side, pigeonholing everyone else. Neither side is immune to it.
Because the locker room conversations and the players in the NFL made a mistake by choosing the wrong person to be the face of their protests. Keapernick explicitly stated he was protesting what the flag stood for. It was about the flag. And he also wore cops as pigs. So yes, Pat is right many weren't doing it for those reasons, but the face of the movement they decided to get behind 100% said it was about not agreeing what the flag stood for.

I was replying to the part where you said "America owes black people big time". America doesn't owe you anything. The past is the past and the truth is there are groups who have had it much worse than blacks, like the native Americans for example. Almost every culture that's ever existed has used slavery in some form or another, including many African tribes that would enslave each other. In fact, that's where Europeans first got their black slaves was from African tribes enslaving each other. So blacks and black cultures have also owned slaves.

I love the way u explain it! U hit the nail on the head!👏👊👍🥂😃 Great job
Brees has never displayed anything but compassion, giving, and love to his fellow human being. Did you hear and read his apology? It was not just an apology. He expressed from his heart what he truly feels and stands on all issues. He stood with every black player during times of need in his past during other ordeals. What he said was off topic (and might even have been taken out of context) and he needed to be educated about the other side’s view on that flag issue, and he was, and showed his genuine heart in response. It is sickening to see people using the opportunity to jump on Brees and try to kill his career and life, after all what he has done. Typical racist attitude. Seen it my whole life. He has always been a true role model for so long, and helped New Orleans in more ways than people can imagine. He is better as a man than 95% of players in any sport. I will always stand with good heart at time of oppression against the mob. The mob has no faith, religion, or morals. This is not building bridges with other human beings at all. I must add that Brees never said what he said in a racial context at all. However, Malcolm Jenkins is the one who caused all this carnage and completely diverted the blind hatred and anger toward a loving person like Drew. I bet any of Drew’s teammates who knew him for years would have talked to him directly (not through the trash way through social media) and educated him privately about their view on this issue, and being the intelligent and open minded person he is, he would have accepted it and learned from it, just like he always have from adversity. He preached about overcoming adversity for the good part of his life in New Orleans. However, Jenkins, who has not been in New Orleans for 10 years, and therefore has forgotten Drew the person, Drew the teammate and Drew the true friend, LUMPED Drew with the rest of the world that is prejudice, and participated in painting everyone with the same brush. That is what is wrong with the current events. I do not see love. I see nothing but reverse hate. I see no dialogue, I see just labeling. How is that going to change hearts of people? Media pundits nationally know nothing about Drew, and know nothing about the people of New Orleans. They are posturing and afraid to express anything based on their knowledge of the man. They just want their precious ratings. It is all garbage. Drew is already rising above that because he has a solid character, and a wonderful heart, and all his true teammates have nothing but love for him, and all his fans who have known him for years will love him even more. We love you Drew and respect you for the man and human being that you are. If only the world has more people who are open to learning and listening, it would be a much better place.
The 1 player from Pittsburgh didn’t kneel. He’s was also a ranger and didn’t want to disappoint his brothers. Also his jersey became the #1 selling jersey in the country. He was embraced by much of America and ridiculed by his teammates. But know this, the brotherhood in the military is stronger than any other bond outside of blood (and much inside)
I feel what you are saying, but I too am a retired combat Ranger, and who was not offended along with a bunch of other soldiers. Why is it that most of the people offended never served in the military. Why aren't the same people offended when the KKK use the flag to preach hate, or other hate groups. You can pick and chose when you want to become offended. Contrary to popular belief, the military does not OWN the flag...just as many black soldiers died under it than white soldiers. Don't confuse racism for patriotism!! 💯
This was an awesome clip! Man... just started getting your clips as suggestions on youtube and i had preconceived notions about your show... those prejudices are now gone forever.
As a veteran I am tired of hearing all these people crying about how they disrespected the flag and the veterans by kneeling but they never put on a uniform
Dats a paddlin I can respect that, you can always have multiple opinions🙌 never have to align yourself to one side or another, it is actually what divides us
Army vet here I'm so sick of it as well. But get this germany got rid of the nazi flag for what it represented so why havent the u.s. do the same with the Confederate flag?
Why? Try looking at it from another point of view. How would a Japanese person who had been in the American concentration camps feel? How about the people who were here FIRST? How about people whose grandparents were forced to come here? Not all whites are happy about what "America" currently "stands for". Open your mind.
As a soldier I always wondered why kneeling was such a bad thing . In history kneeling was always meant as a sign of respect to Kings. Standing was always rude 🤷🏾♂️ The flag doesn’t mean the same thing for everyone in this country as some because not everyone enjoys the same freedoms as others. Which is sad because it should via the constitution.
Thank you for your service. The kneeling itself is fine, it's the kneeling during the anthem instead of putting your hand over your heart. It's better than sitting but still not right
@adam tranello most stupid comment ever. He said as it should. Meaning there is no law that exclusively discriminates against black people but laws are nothing but something written on a piece of paper unless they are reflected in reality. Laws says there is equality but reality says there is? Now should I believe a piece of paper of my everyday lived experience?
I guess either you don’t know the history of this country or you are one of those people that are trying to erase our histories of our country. Cabernick is trying to do something for his name nothing good for this country. I am from American Samoa and I love this country. But if you wanna kneel doing the national anthem go to other countries and do it to their anthem
Good arguments and we'll put. However Colin Kaepernick is a fraudulent race hustler. He makes money off the backs of black people who actually go through them things.
Brees voiced his thoughts on an unpopular issue and gets publicly humiliated. Spends years helping the African Americans in poor communities in NO....silence.
How was he wrong, by not agreeing with it? He has every right to not support kneeling during the anthem just like the ones that do kneel have every right to do so. We as a society have reached a point where you toe the line and agree 100% with the narrative on the news or you're wrong. And that itself is wrong.
Ok so if a highly renowned person like Bill gates or someone like that says something as out of line like Brees did they are not gonna get called out? Yea he has done some really good things for the community but if you say some bs like he did then expect to be called out no matter what happened in the past.
He was asked about black players kneeling. It was insensitive of him to not consider why black players kneel. He was not asked if he would kneel. He was asked his thoughts on the players that do kneel. His mistake was not even talking about why players are kneeling. It shows that at best he is incredibly self absorbed and hasn’t considered the reasons players are kneeling. And at worst it shows he cares more about fabric than black life.
If your white and saying anything but BLM save my soul, your considered ignorant and racist, sounds familiar almost like somthing that happened in Germany but I can’t recall
how stupid are you? ahahaha The point is that in this case if you do not agree it means that you do not actually want equality, you are therefore concrete proof of what this movement is about.
...it's unfortunate that no one is mentioning that Brees says, "I think we accomplished greater things as a community, society, and as a country when we do it together... I think at the end of the day, we need to work together to provide opportunities for one another to continue to move our country forward to a bigger and better place." It doesn't sound like he said that protests are bad, police brutality and racism are irrelevant and non-existent, but he just doesn't agree with the method of the protest. To me, it sounds like he dislikes it as much as anyone but his word choice didn't express that (like Pat said, maybe not polished as a speaker). I did have to work to find the original transcripts for Brees' comments, which is unfortunate because it allows things to get swept under the rug, just like police brutality and racism have for so long
That may as well be lip service. You see him kneeling with his teammates, and now he comes out and says he’s against it for all of the wrong reasons. He’s ignorant of the struggling of his own gd teammates, and paints the wrong narrative to those who don’t listen to what the protest is really about. I don’t think he’s racist, but he’s not trying to end it. He doesn’t care, because he’s ignorant, and reinforced his own statement, becoming arrogant. He’s not helping the black community achieve equality.
Imo it's because it sounds like he doesn't even realize what it takes to accomplish all that. How can we "work together to provide opportunities for one another to continue to move out country forward" when it seems like he still fails to grasp the purpose of what is being protested? It's not like that quote is wrong but what possibility is there to "work together" if he and many others have completely misunderstood the point of these protests from the start? That's what I think. It's easy to say yeah, we need to work together as one, but it's another thing to not even realize what needs to be fixed or why, and from his initial statement it seems like he still doesn't understand what that is.
Wraith, I agree with that but I'm not sure he established himself as a racist unless as Nick pointed out, it was complete lip service which was a thought in the back of my mind. I truly hope that he meant what he said and he wants to work together to figure out how to solve the problems but I don't know him so I can't be the judge of that
@@Alex-kd5xc I think there might be ways to continually monitor and further weed out people who would be bad cops, and limit police brutality in that sense, but I agree that ending racism is a completely different endeavor entirely. But, working together could start by, as Part mentioned, listening to a side that you never heard about before and trying to understand it better even though complete understanding may never be attainable when someone is that far removed
2 things can be true: Drew Brees understood AND supported the message of the protest, AND he feels it’s disrespectful to perform that protest during the anthem. What everyone fails to grasp is that they are not mutually exclusive. Also, military members were on both sides of the fence on this issue.
It comes off as a slight to his teammates who may practice the kneeling demonstration. Is he considering the fact that 2 things can be true of his teammates? That they fully support their country while performing a peaceful demonstration during a sporting event
@@negan2714 Well I think Drew's teammates have a nuanced stance on this and he isn't respecting that. If these really are his brothers and they are pleading to him that they are not disrespecting anyone. He should be able to understand that point of view.
Exactly. I 100 percent stand behind this protest. Im also a veteran. But i just wish the Anthem wasnt the item picked to start it all but i am big enough not to cry a river over it to be able to still see there point and hear the message.

This was actually very accurate from a person in the middle of America.
Bob Ellison tell the whole story..you want to talk disrespecting veterans..tell me how many homeless vets are there in America?
Bob Ellison the flag don’t represent the same value to all Americans because America don’t represent the value of all Americans

THANK YOU👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

I was replying to the part where you said "America owes black people big time". America doesn't owe you anything. The past is the past and the truth is there are groups who have had it much worse than blacks, like the native Americans for example. Almost every culture that's ever existed has used slavery in some form or another, including many African tribes that would enslave each other.

Why is it that most of the people offended never served in the military. Why aren't the same people offended when the KKK use the flag to preach hate, or other hate groups.
Yea he has done some really good things for the community but if you say some bs like he did then expect to be called out no matter what happened in the past.
shut up, literally. before his statement, black people wouldn’t shut up about drew brees being invited to “the cookout”
I love all your videos, but this is one, if not my favorite video/take. Thank you Patt
Brees wasn't disrespecting people who kneeled he was explaining why he will always stand. His personal reason.
You must be a white privileged person..
He said he would NEVER agree with people who kneel... implying that it really doesnt matter why they do it.
I am so glad I clicked on this. this guy broke it out down very well. you give me hope🙏🏼
It’s ironic how this movement is supposed to be spreading “equality” but instead they’re choosing to belittle anyone who doesn’t agree
If your white and saying anything but BLM save my soul, your considered ignorant and racist, sounds familiar almost like somthing that happened in Germany but I can’t recall
how stupid are you? ahahaha
The point is that in this case if you do not agree it means that you do not actually want equality, you are therefore concrete proof of what this movement is about.
It’s ok to grow. Drew might. Don’t be such a snowflake.
Erick Welsh Proved my point for me thanks bub
Pat McAfee the voice of reason.
Glad you pointed out misdirection.
Drew attempted misdirection again.
And it backfired.
I wish there could be many more people as wise and all around amazing of a person as Pat is, much respect for you man!
Excellent well spoken points sir you have my subscription!
Pat mcafee always reminding us how to think like normal human being lol
This is by far the best and most insightful explanation I’ve heard on this. So much better than angry tweets and cancel culture for life reactions.
...it's unfortunate that no one is mentioning that Brees says, "I think we accomplished greater things as a community, society, and as a country when we do it together...
I truly hope that he meant what he said and he wants to work together to figure out how to solve the problems but I don't know him so I can't be the judge of that
Anyone that thinks Drew Brees is a racist is a low iq baby.
Exactly. You can be on both sides of an issue because humans have deep understandings of topics. Some do at least.
The timing though... if he really feels both as you say her know it was insensitive to mention the other side now because it’s not relevant.
One of the best detailed conversation about the protesting by kneeling. I love Pat for his bluntness
Pat taking them vitamins
^^ underrated pun
