My children were not pleased with the Santa experience, except the child who later refused dental anaesthesia for a filling because he had a soccer game that day and his mouth would feel “weird.” Santa didn’t phase him. One Christmas it even kinda looked like he was going to ask Santa to dinner.
I totally get it - I was always so scared of people dressed up in costumes as a kid !! Luckily I never had to go sit with Santa ! However one time when I was a kid my family and I went to ICE at National Harbor in National Harbor, MD and the theme was How the grinch stole Christmas - after the actual attraction their was a photo op with the grinch - my mom wanted us to get a photo with him for our Christmas card - so we did and I was so scared I was attached to and gripping my mom , with tears streaming down my face , and look of terror in my eyes !! It wasn’t good but now look back at the pic and laugh - now that am 20, I am not as scared of this as I used to be !

Get a grip! It’s not going to scar them for life. Coddling them will absolutely have direct effects on their lives though. This generation of kids aren’t going to be able to cope with being an adult when mommy and daddy can’t keep life being cushy and easy to go though. Every time I see a parent doing this it makes me sick to my stomach.

And as parents place their precious offspring in the lap of a complete stranger too quickly-because there are other kids waiting, you see-recount what they want for Christmas, well, they feel frazzled and ready to get the hell out of there. But we need to get the photo. Yes, the photo. All eyes are now upon the lucky kid in Santa's lap as she is encouraged to "say 'Cheese!'" with a Facebook-worthy smile. WHEW! And we wonder why they cry? These are just the practical reasons. (There's also a perfectly rational explanation having to do with child development.) Stranger anxiety, or a sense of distress around unfamiliar people, can explain reactions experienced by young children to Santa and other unfamiliar people. Stranger anxiety develops slowly as infants begin to distinguish between their primary caregivers and other people. For most babies, stranger anxiety emerges around eight months of age, peaks between 12 to 15 months, and then declines until about age 24 months. Perhaps you already noticed that nearly all of the children in the Santa photos displayed here seem to fall in this age range.
