  • Michael Giacchino's scores have brought to life some of our most beloved stories whether it's a videogame, TV series or film. He has worked across every genre, and has built found relationships with some of the best filmmakers in the industry. But It's his amazing talents as a storyteller that make people gravitate towards his music.
For this All Access we were able to squeeze some time with Michael during his press day for Jojo Rabbit. We dive right in and discuss the approach for Jojo Rabbit, and how director Taika Waititi sought him out to score the film.
Michael talks about his childhood and his path to becoming a composer, which wasn't the original plan at all. Michael's passion was filmmaking, and he went to film school to become a director but his side hobby in music ended up setting him on the path he's on now.
We talk about subjects such as working with directors who are friends, and what happens when there's a disagreement. We also cover topics like knowing the business side of the industry, where the first note comes from, how to tackle sequels, how to jump into an established franchise, why Michael prefers not to read the script, if Michael will ever return to games or TV, where he stands in the "Marvel is not cinema" debate, what he and Matt Reeves plan on doing with The Batman, and what has been the worst butchering of his last name so far!
Michael is one of the most established auteur composers working today, and it was a true pleasure to have him as a guest on All Access.

My favourite soundtrack that Michael Giacchino did is the Cars 2 Score because 1/2 of the energy that the film has comes from the amazing score that the film is infused with and he did for this really underrated film.

His work for the Medal of Honor series really made that series. Especially "Frontline".

The single most exciting piece of news to me in 2020 is his return to the MoH franchise with the upcoming Above and Beyond. I just hate that I'll be having to leave my battlestation and headset at home to visit my folks for the holidays so I only get a few days in December to get my mind blown. I've never been as enraptured by an original score as I was the first time I heard the music in Frontline. I can't even listen to Operation Market Garden without shedding a few tears at that glorious finale.

I honestly think MOH Frontline has the best video game soundtrack ever.

He really is a spiritual successor to John Williams and Jerry Goldsmith and has captured the classic Hollywood sound of the Golden Age as well like those of Friedhofer, Miklos Rosza, Franz Wachsmann and Alfred Newman

Aside from Michael’s amazing music, he is so interesting to listen to. I love hearing him talk about his process of creating scores, especially as someone who doesn’t know how to write music. The marriage of music with something visual is so very special.

My favorite and I think the most underrated Michael Giacchino score has to be what he did for both Space Mountain at Disneyland and Space Mountain Mission 2 at Disneyland Paris. and those are things that he never really talks about in interviews etc., but the theme usage, effortless key changes, insane string writing, and masterful horn arrangements make those soundtracks worth listening to even outside of the rides they belong to.

The score for the video game Mercenaries is so good. Themes by Michael Giacchino and majority of the score by Chris Tilton.

20:40 I love how he talks about pulling an old theme back from the dead, if the Spiderman No Way Home rumours are true we may see him use Danny Elfman and James Horner's Spiderman themes.

I sure hope Michael would consider Peter Hirschmann and Medal of Honor Above and Beyond to be special enough for him to return to video games.
