All Access: John Powell - Episode 3

- Earlier this year, we had a fantastic All Access with How To Train Your Dragon trilogy writer/director Dean DeBlois and John Powell. But for our 3rd All Access with John, we wanted to explore the last chapter in the HTTYD trilogy from John's point of view as well as take the opportunity to revisit some stories that we touched upon way back in our first All Access.
This interview is part reboot and part new examination. John talks about his path to becoming a composer as we examine his career's beginnings. We tackle a variety of different topics as we always do as John opens up about his process and approach to writing music to picture. John reflects back on the How To Train Your Dragon trilogy, specifically how he found his own life reflected upon the films. We also talk a lot about ending the trilogy and how John carefully crafted the score.
Sitting down with John Powell is always a pleasure and joy, and it's terrific to have him back on a brand new All Access!

I mean who doesn't love John Powell?! He is so genuine and funny! He's the best composer in my opinion.
One of the very best in his generation. Definitely.
nay sir ,i must protest ,for it is Howard Shore who ascends to the level of thy complement
John Powell is the most interesting and humble composer today.
I hope he takes over Star Wars when JW retires - his job he did on Solo was perfection
I agree
I think Giachinno's style is better. But the new films are a lot worse than either JP or MG's scores, not even worth watching.
@@TB1M1 What do you mean? Giacchino is quite good but his score for Rogue One was dreadful. While JP's solo sounded as good as JW in terms of orchestrations, balance and strength of the themes
@@jwc6621 I like most of Powells scores but Solo was completely unmemorable, far to many notes. The Han theme sounded similar to Indiana Jones. Of course JP had to use that material so it's not his fault. It's not necessary to have so many notes
@@TB1M1 I'm not comparing JP to JW... JW is the master. I'm saying that JP does a FAR better job on star wars than MG - in which Rogue One was the MOST unmemorable...
His score for Face/Off is outstanding 🔥
43:22 GOLD!!!!!!
11:10 "Can you make it sound more chocolaty ?" John is so kind and funny ! He is so inspiring ! Thanks for the interview !
Excellent interview guys 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽 To hear him talk about the connection of music and it’s composers through time was such a great moment. Thanks for making these interviews available for everybody.
If I'm not mistaken, this is the 1st interview where we actually get to SEE Kaya!! Albeit, in reflected form! AWESOME!! (Right before the psychedelics kick in, haha!) Thank you for this SUPREME interview!! The "backwards cassette transfer" part killed me!!!
You're brilliant John
Awesome!
Whilst everyone's out pestering H.Z for an apprenticeship, I think I've found who's emails I'll be bombarding.
Good luck.
Great job Kaya!
'yeah but can you make sound more like an avocado' 🥑😂
Freaking directors
I hugely appreciate these interviews, you can just tell that you share our, the viewers love of JP's music. If there are more interviews in the stars, would it be possible to submit questions? Because I'm pretty sure I know all the interviews out there and he has answered the thing with the Mendelssohn concerto a couple of times but I still have many questions left. For instance he talked about sibelius being a breakthrough influence on dragons, but I can't for the life of me figure out what piece or stylistic device he means. Or what inspiration he and Hans drew on for KFP. The list goes on. Keep up the good work!
Like JP says it's all there in the classical repertoire..
@@TB1M1 Yes, but where exactly?
@@stumm_and_laut If you go through Star wars rots for example, there are nods everywhere to Stravinsky and Holst. But JW weaves them into his own style, that's why it's so clever. Duel of fates motif is from a well known work
@@TB1M1 I know what you mean. You can clearly hear Holst and Korngold and Dvorak in STAR WARS, i. e. Korngold in the Main Title. But even though JP said somewhere that Sibelius was a breakthrough for Dragons I can't find anything in Sibelius repertoire that sounds like Dragons (or rather vice versa).
❤️🙏
Like the series BUT why ask the same questions once again? I would think that new questions would naturally pop up in between these interviews?
Why do all these composers have cash registers at their workstations?
Usually Lemur/Touch OSC or some other DAW macro control with common processes.
can you put a new dragon called: windigo please? the windigo's main colours are: light blue, pink, arara blue and purple. windigo's can camouflage itself like fury's. they can glow in the dark and underwater at night. can the head title be How to train your dragon: mystery of the windigo. thank's for listining.
