The Early Show - Upstate N.Y.: Irene washed away home, businesses

In a space of only a few hours, Hurricane Irene dumped more than ten inches of rain on Windham, N.Y., turning creeks into rivers that rushed down the town's main street. CBS News national correspondent Jim Axelrod reports.

My dad worked for NYS dot at the time and he had closed multiple bridges and roadways and he watched a lady and he trailer float down a creek that had turned into a river

Once you drive out of the Bronx, Yonkers, and then into Westchester - you are in upstate NY. There are many different regions upstate NY - and it goes all the way to the Canadian border. NYS goes from Montauk Point at the eastern end of Long Island and all the way across Manhattan and beyond.

You do realize there is more to NY than NY City??? NY STATE goes clear up to Massena and Canton... That is Upstate NY... Syracuse, Rochester areas are Central NY....

They had to put the destruction from prattsville into this clip so that way they can say Windham was bad. Don't get me wrong Windham did get hit hard but not as bad as prattsville. Prattsville almost got washed off the map.

sad story but that is not upstate NY. its not even Mid-State. Watertown, Plattsburgh...those are in Upstate

Most of that footage is not even from Windham - it's from Prattsville - which was devastated. Windham was bad but nowhere near what they had in Prattsville.

This is sad in 2011 dozens houses 🏘 and businesses and roads and supermarkets and schools 🏫 and restaurants destroyed after hurricane Irene struck thanks to olive fire 🔥 departments #1 #2 #3#4#5 and aShokan DEP police 👮‍♀️ and Ulster Fire 🔥 department and Ulster police 👮‍♀️ who help us during Hurricane Irene

i was 4 when this happened and i just remember all our power going off and looking out my nyc window and seeing trash cans flying around smashing into cars
