  • Madagascar is one of the great wonders of our planet. Wim Vertriest, Manager of Field Gemology at GIA, takes us on a journey back in time to understand how the island acquired its incredible gemstone diversity for which it is known today. He shares highlights from a recent field gemology expedition to two remote mines in Northern Madagascar: one a demantoid mine and the other, a sapphire mine.

I’ve been to Northern Madagascar as well. Madagascar is a very rich country in terms of natural resources, but its people live in dire poverty. Locals have no choice but to mine illegally, it’s that or let their families starve. In the end, it’s the governments and foreign corporations that make all the profits while destroying the fragile ecosystem.

Excellent presentation, wish you could do one on Madagascar quartz and agates, my specialty. I have carved some Mad river agates into one of a kind stones years ago.... cant wait to see a deposit in person someday.

Great video. Sadly the auto-generated subtitles aren't accurate.
Does anyone know what the 3 rare minerals are that Wim mentions at 3:36?
    Pezzatite?
