No he didn’t play the history of jazz. Benny may have wrote this tune, but he wasn’t trying to blow through them changes at that speed. You James Williams facial expression after finishing his on solo. It’s a challenge. Freddie was like “ain’t this a bitch.” We gotta play the changes and this cat can go free style or avant-garde.
Drum solo was incredible work!. Tony Reedus raises eyebrows at 6:14 when no one else enters at the top of the form. Freddie thinks Benny starts playing/abstracting within the Stablemates form with rigor and integrity. Notice Freddie still intense with concentration at 8:37. By 8:52, Freddie breaks a grin. Then Freddie is taken aback by 9:09 and addresses the rhythm section players to express his disappointment, if not disbelief, that they all dropped the form. Evidently, Benny couldn't hang with Stablemates at this tempo so he BS'd his way around aimlessly. If you disagree about this, I want to hear from you. Just look at pianist James Williams' post solo reaction at 4:49-4:52. There is no justifiable reason for Benny to drop the form after everyone else in his band put in the serious work to blow over the tune. It is sad that Benny wasn't willing or able. Freddie thought the same thing.
@@davidsaenzsax5177 I really hope you're joking. It's very obviously an open duo between sax/drums. Trumpet solo, piano solo, drum solo, then open drum/sax duo, definitely an arrangement choice. None of it was BS or aimless.
@@RyanMorgan32 it's not spot on at all, couldn't be further from it. Ya'll seriously don't understand the tradition, pretty wild to be making comments like these
@@ELPsteel Benny composed the tune which is fabulous and rightly praised. However, tossing out the form after everyone else labored triumphantly over it is shady and deserves criticism. Benny was exposed here and he has to own it. There is no other way to explain Freddie's negative reaction and disappointment. Benny should've counted it in slower so he could actually play over his own tune.
@@davidsaenzsax5177 oh now I see you're not joking. You did hear the bass drop out right? Have you seriously never heard an open sax/drum duo without changes before? You must be new to jazz. If you're not then you're clearly just trolling
Bennie wrote many terrific tunes....Stablemates for one
My family here🥰🥰🥰
Yes'm!
Peter Washington killing it on bass!
Always! 😀
I saw Mr. Hubbard when I was a young adult at our Jazz Festival. I was blown away!!! I love this number here. 😊

RIP MR.Golson.
Absolutely crazy, this video never fails to amaze me
Freddie Hubbard is The Man!!!!
Beautiful how after a long free-form Golson solo they return smoothly to the melody
Unbelievable!!!
Wow, all the cats are incredible on this performance. B.Golson played the entire history of jazz saxophone right there!!
B. Golson was weak sauce at best here. Not that I can critique but Freddie surely did.

3.05 James Williams quotes Ellington, Rockin' in Rhythm :)
En piano 1 verdadero gigante de su instrumento, James Williams( con influencias de McCoy Tyner).
Awesome playing
Freddie's face at 9:10 when Benny goes into 'Lester Leaps In'...

Wow!❤
👏🏾👏🏾
I literally laughed out loud at Freddie's face @ 8:45, Freddie is vibing pretty hard!
Hub worked his butt off and then Bennie Golson BS'd his way around, dropping the form and played zero changes.
