This week we’re talking about Patek Philippe, and specifically the Aquanaut range, which has always been the understudy for the supermodel, Nautilus.
The sporty rubber-strapped Aquanaut was launched in 1997 and has steadily gained popularity, increasingly among women. But what makes it so special, and should you try to get one?
Join Damian for a detailed look at two popular Aquanauts, the 5164a Travel Time, and the awesome 5968G white gold Chronograph. These two sit at opposite ends of the Aquanaut scale, but are equally desirable for different reasons.
Episode includes:
Patek Aquanaut 51645a Travel Time
Current Aquanaut range
Aquanaut history
Patek Aquanaut 5968G Chronograph

Please keep filming your videos, this gorgeous wrist watch, has to be one of the ultimate.
My comment regarding "any more watches" on the Car Guys channel recently was made tongue in cheek😉, so it was a pleasant surprise when this video popped up..and that 5968G is indeed a very nice piece.
Always thought it was one of the coolest looking offerings from PP, but having to check your phone every time you glance at your wrist to confirm you haven't accidentally bumped on of those GIANT hour change pushes is f'ing hilarious.
The 5164 is my favorite Patek out of all the collections. I just love how the aquanaut is just so different from every other Patek. It fits a more casual person
LOVE IT...
Beautiful
Perfection. Thank you for your detailed reviews. Your hard work is appreciated.
Thanks, Michael
Great to see the channel back Damien! Love the Patek episodes
Cheers, Jim
Thank You
Excellent review!!
Thank you - very kind
Very enjoyable episode as always. These have been under the radar for me until now but very much in full view after the review. Best of luck getting the orange piece Damien!
Thanks, Eoin - very kind of you
I'd love a regular 5167A I agree I think they just look right, not too flash, but so well made and well proportioned. Nowt wrong with a bit of black rubber strappage either :) Nice seeing the bigger brothers thanks
Great video, not sure about the comment about availability.
Nice Video. I just bought the 5968A (orange). It is a great watch. Have stopped wearing everything else…for the time being.
Good choice!
I agree 100% it’s perfection
The wait is one thing to get one of these but the amount of time waiting on a patek to get serviced keeps me from ever buying one. I have heard as long as 12 months with an average of 6 months
I must admit, the Aquanaut travel time is one of my favourite watches, unfortunately out of my league today
you can always try a SPECHT&SOHNE homage. I did it, I am not wealthy enough to afford an original.
@@abes.4040 preach, got one of those in my cart to buy soon. It’s a bummer when you admire these beautiful watches but can’t afford them not even after 3 lifetimes 😂
@@abes.4040 how are you liking the SPECHT&SOHNE? Is it good quality?
Is it just me or is the dial on the standard black one actually a bit brown? I've never seen someone actually mention that it's brown, but it looks totally brown to me, which is a good thing imo.
I recently got a PP celestial 44M strap, not an everyday timepiece. But a wonderful Timepiece, a hair nicer than my sky dweller, witch i can use daily.
Nice
Another great review! I’m a huge fan of the Aquanaut and have 3 of them! My wife has one too! Great watches! And the clasps are so much better than the 5711 and 5712 😀
Very cool!
Hi Damian, what happened to the buying story?
Brilliant as ever - amazing PP.
Thanks, James - appreciate that
Thats what she said..
I believe the proper English term is "gutted" that you are not mental for the olivy swampy version . Would prob sell my sister down the river for one ;)
You have convinced me. I was ambivalent about the Aquanaut. The orange one, I must have the orange 🍊 one.
Are the ss and wg lug width/thickness the same? My ad won’t allow me to order the chrono orange strap… probably PP policy but I don’t understand why can’t if they are the same width and thickness at the lug
Get it from the grey market then
I wear the green strap on my blue 5968G, loving it! Got the strap from Chrono24
You forgot to show the chrongraph properly. I‘m talking about the flying chronograph where you restart the chronograph immediately by pushing the below knob. Ok? Understood?
However, i like. Our presentation on a maximum level.
Interesting discussion. I go back and forth on this model. But I do think that you picked out a real winner for yourself.
Really enjoyed your Vid! Watched it wearing my early ref 5066 1a ( bought in 2000) on its ugly steel strap! Ha Ha! Which on my skinny wrist fits more snug than the rubber which flares out! Cant complain if i include 4 services and its purchase cost of £5950 full set I am still quids in! Its been faultless over 20 years!
Good for you
lovely video
The 5164 could be my one and done watch…. Just need to get my hands on one!
Thoughts on the new 5905/1A ? Possible review in the future?
I have to be honest, I didn't think that much of it when I tried it on.
@@TheWatchGuysTV thanks for your response and honesty. Looking forward to your upcoming videos.
The 42.2mm aquanauts are too large for my wrist. In fact, all the aquanauts right now are quite sizeable. Even my wife's ladies aquanaut is much much larger than the original 35.6mm.
One would argue that it's not that big considering that the AP offshores are 43mm. Yes but the offshores are thick so they essentially extend the curvature of the wrist outward and even at 43mm it works on my small wrist. This, I can't pull off. It just looks wrong.
What an absolute stunner of a watch , horological perfection 👌🏻
Do any of you have an issue with the Aquanaut clasp sometimes come undone while wearing the watch?
I have had it happen a couple of times, now you mention it
Thanks for sharing and congrats wear them in good health ✌️
I always wondered with the aquanaut range, when the strap is cut to fit your wrist and not adjustable. How does it feel when your wrist warms up and expanded. Does the strap stretch? Do you still feel comfortable wearing it?
You have some really nice watches Damian and I enjoy watching your channel, including car guys. Keep up the great work.🍻 Mark
Thanks, Mark. Yes it is cut to your wrist and so far I’ve not had any issues
@@TheWatchGuysTV I’ve always found that one can get away with fitting a high quality rubber strap so that it’s a little bit on the loose side to allow for wrist expansion. There’s so much friction between the underside of the strap and skin that it isn’t going to slide around at all. (In fact, this is also true of the _calfskin strap_ on my 5212A, now that I think about it. So maybe Patek have just got the fine details sorted, when it comes to straps?)
@@TheWatchGuysTV thanks for letting me know Damian. I visited the Patek boutique in Bond St. last year and put my name down for the 5167A. Apparently there's a 7 year wait. The sales manager was very nice and gave me a VIP ticket for 2 for their Geneva museum, thinking of going there next year when traveling is easier. Btw have you been to the museum. All the best mark 🍻
When you buy from the official AD they provide 2 x rubber straps, one which they cut to size there and then (depending summer or winter width) and the other strap can be sized at a later date depending on season/temperature/wrist size.
Stunning watches thanks for sharing .
Thanks for watching!
Have to agree that the blue is much better looking than the green.
Can you do a vid on getting a PP or AP ? How to get a dealer to take you seriously?
Yes, I already have
Start building a serious relationship with your local dealer (regular client and Christmas wishes) and maybe one day you’ll get the call… this is the way
In my experience Damien's advice is 100% right: if you want a restricted/wait-listed piece from an AD you'd better spend lots (and I mean LOTS) of money on other watches that they have hanging around in their showcase. This isn't always a popular point, but it's just the way it is. In the case of Patek they are only getting 1 (or occasionally 2) of the rare steel references PER YEAR; so if they have 20 or 30 people on their interest list for that watch, then they can afford to pick and choose who gets served. You have to be good to them, if they are going to be good to you.)
As a watch enthusiast for over 50 years, the only P-P watches I would consider owning would be the simple, plain, yellow gold Calatrava, white face, black Romans, hobnail bezel, with or without seconds register (The Jack Welch Watch) as a dress watch, or the simple Aquanaut for daily wear. Being an engineer and a minimalist, I prefer no complications at all. To me, complications pose just another potential problem in terms of serviceability and reliability. Bottom line: If it's not simple forget it!
Yes they are beautiful. I have 2 - an ivory dial and a black dial. I might do an episode on them next.
The orange 5968 is the most garish “new money” Aquanaut made and I’m shocked that you like it so much but if hard to get is your only measure for liking a watch then well I’m not surprised.
I disagree.
Hy please I have questions can u reply
Which questions?
the cost price of this watch is 30 dollars
All Pateks are special :-)
I enjoy and appreciate your content. Please don't assume disparagement of your work from my comments~ to answer your headline question: NOTHING. Nothing makes this watch so special. It has good design that is borrowed twice over. At its price point, it is tremendously underwhelming. The market today is flooded with outstanding horology and this watch ranks squarely in the median middle. For the money~ it's buried in the basement.
The date cut-out and hands are just disgraceful. For this price, they should be special.
Correction: 5268 is not quartz
Before even i watch the vídeo i click on the like buttom!
Bless you
Unpopular opinion: find this watch a very over hyped watch and totally not that attractive. There are many watches out there for a fraction of the price and are better. If purchased retail I understand but definitely not for the Grey market pricing - my 2cts
I agree. Why thousands are in awe for this very uninspired 1970’s design is beyond me.
If it came at a $500 price point from a micro brand, I’d say why not, to each their own.
160k too much for a watch
Another over-hyped steel watch. Now only special and popular because of the nautilus’ lack of availability. Expect this to be discontinued in a few years once waiting lists get stupid and everyone’s attention turns to it as the Steel sports watch from Patek.
Or not.
a $150 stainless steel Fossil watch will last just as many years as this PaTeK
Sure
The only Aquanaut that is special is the one which can hack. Oh wait...
That bracelet is ugly as hell. I agree
I knew it! 😀
Meh, hype.
Nobody wanted an aquanaut 5 years ago
Er, yes they did
It's too thick. Get the non-chrono version instead.
The Aquanaut line is the most over priced and overhyped Patek currently and rivals RM in that respect. This is the most underwhelming piece in Patek catalogue, yet it cost the same money as a 5270P.
?160k? Just bought a 5168G for 38k€ at retail…
Ugly and overpriced - an irresistible combination for anyone who has too much money and too little taste. Aquanaut, Nautilus and Royal Oak are worn by Rolex guys who like to think that they are better than Rolex guys.
