My rule of thumb is if you wanna make a character OP, follow the internal logic of the universe. I have nothing against an OP Mary Jane in principle as long as it's organically worked in. If Insomniac wants her to perform superheroics, they should just give her superpowers. When regular human MJ with barely any training can easily take down a group of statuesque highly trained mercenaries some of whom are aware of her presence, it becomes farcical. Great for memes, terrible for character investment.
Insomniac knew full well how players HATED playing her stealth missions in the first game as stated in one interview. But sadly they never learned from it. They were faced with a choice of either find different choice of different gameplay or double down on MJ mission and they chose the latter. They made it worst when they made her too OP that the Hunters and Symbiotes became a joke to get taken out easily by her. They were also aware how OP they made her but they quote on quote "Don't care." Just imagine if they let us play as Black Cat running and fighting the Hunters before deciding to go steal Dr. Strange teleport thingy to escape Kraven. It wouldn't take much effort as Black Cat fighting style is similar to the Spider-men. Just have to tweak it a bit to fit her style.
"This is why she looks different." Ok, there's a reason why the face scan of the actress looks different. But there's no conceivable in-game reason why MJ looks different and THAT's the problem. Was it really that hard for Insomniac to use the existing face model and rework it themselves? Peter looks older without looking completely different. MJ's actress having a different shaped face after breaking her jaw and multiple surgeries does not mean than MJ should reflect that.
Honestly, I have no idea why that's the case, everyone's face models were updated even if it was lighter, Peter still looks different again but much better, Harry got a whole new face model but that's fine since we didn't really see him in game in Spider-Man PS4, we only saw his portrait
I’ve always felt in the minority for liking this version of MJ, both in this game and in the first game. Yeah she has her flaws, but that’s also what makes her an interesting character, to me anyway. I think she’s better than in the first game because of how she and Peter are back together while in the first game they were broken up trying to solve a case, which makes things testy between them, but now that they’re together, things are better, well that’s how it seems. And I don’t think her missions are that bad either, they’re definitely an improvement over the first game imo. I also like how she more accidentally gets thrown into the situations instead of actively getting herself involved (well, except for the final mission in this game, but it was a case of saving the world and with what she was doing compared to the Spider-Men are doing, while still dangerous, not as dangerous as taking on Venom). As for her being Scream, I like it because it was an interesting way to mix things up a bit and develop her and Peter’s relationship. And for jumping in front of Peter to protect him from Venom, I agree with what you said in the video. As for her being too OP and one shot-ing Hunters and Symbiotes (even though from what I remember, it takes multiple shots to take a symbiote down), that’s the video game part of it; it doesn’t really matter story-wise. This is all just my opinion. And I really like this version of Mary Jane. And while I can understand some criticisms towards her, a good amount of it is unfair.

They seem really focused on trying to show the friendship between Peter and Harry, which wasn't a bad idea, but the missions we got were a flashback, a mission entirely about puzzle solving, and the carnival mission where we figure out that Harry is wearing the Symbiote suit. I also felt quite mocked by the second Mary Jane mission. While Peter sleeping in the suit is eviscerating dozens of hunters, you are playing as Mary Jane watching it happen, as if they were saying "yeah, we know what you really want, but you're not getting it."

The missions introducing Harry should've been trimmed down into one mission, not three long, slow, padded missions with no substance. Also, the boss fights. They were way too dragged out. In the first game, a boss had three phases for the most part, but in this game, they can have up to five. The boss fights didn't introduce anything new that the first and second phases had already done, so again, padding. Add to that, the Mary Jane missions. I felt mocked especially by the second one. It's like the developers are laughing at me, knowing that I bought this game because venom was in it, and maybe we would get to play as him, but when I saw that I had to Watch a sleeping Peter eviscerating hunters, I knew what they were telling me, that this was an elaborate prank and I fell for it.
I still love the game & everything, but they definitely could've done more in the story & everything. If Sony haven't rushed or interfere with Insomniac project, the game would've been flawless.
I honestly don't mind MJ being the host of Scream, but I think Insomniac should've done more with her. Like give her more scenes in the story instead of appearing just for a boss fight.

I think part of the problem is that non-white people often characterise white women as appearing masculine. Caucasian features tend to read more masculine, and I think the animeisation of characters in video games over the last 20 years has compounded this issue by creating unrealistic expectations about how people should look aesthetically. The increase in realism in games can’t help but make characters overall less aesthetically pleasing, because our standards have become unrealistic. Because white women tend to have more angular features and stronger jawlines, this shift towards realism disproportionately affects the perception of their appearance.

But with staying on topic, this time around MJ is better written to incorporate her into the storyline which isn't really a whole lot and segmented very well. Additionally, more side content would have been better serve the gameplay. Exploring Black Cat’s story would be a better use of gameplay hours.
