I just read this article published on 8/30/19 about a stellar workout Sunday Silence had between races at Del Mar racetrack as a prep for the 1989 Super Derby. Great story! Here’s the link to the article: www.horseracingnation.com/news/Sunday_Silences_unbelievable_day_in_the_Del_Mar_sun_123# Here’s the link to the 1989 Super Derby at Del Mar: ruclips.net/video/xYIfSkG2SKU/видео.html
I loved Sunday Silence. He was almost black and so beautiful. I was very upset when He went to Japan but he was beloved there and set the foundation for one of the greatest breeding programs in th world. There is a great monument to him in Japan and he has sired some of the finest race horses n the world I loved him.
I loved him, too. I know horses can't live forever, but I do wish there would be a cure found soon for Laminitis. It felled Sunday Silence & Secretariat, too, years before they should have died.
Probably my favourite horse ever. I don't think he had the overall raw talent that Easy Goer had but he had speed and was as gutsy a horse as you will ever see...and of course aesthetically he was absolutely beautiful.
My choice for the greatest non-triple crown winner would be Native Dancer, whose bloodlines still influence most of American racing. My second in line for the title would be Sunday Silence. I was privileged to be witness to both of them.
Sunday Silence and Easy Goer....1989 was the Most exciting Year for me in this Sport...Both of these Great Horses never Disappointed against one another as they ran 1st & 2nd in all 4 Match ups...Cant ask for more than that...The Excitement that surrounded this rivalry was at a Very high level...RIP to both of these Great Champions
Sunday Silence was leading sire in Japan for five years after his death in August of 2002. He stood atop their sire's list from 1995-2007. His sons now carry on that legacy with gusto. As for his color, he is listed by the Jockey Club as a Dark Bay/Brown but was most likely a genotypic black. As a yearling he nearly died twice, once from a viral infection as a foal and once as a yearling when traveling, the driver of the truck that was transporting him had a heart attack causing the trailer to flip over into a ditch. When he retired from racing, breeders snubbed him in the States and he was then sold to a breeder in Japan to stand as a stallion at Shadai Stallion Station...the rest is history and his legacy is still very much alive and well today. You will not find races, often, in Japan where there are horses that do not have Sunday Silence in the pedigree at some point. His son, Deep Impact is now one of the top sires not only in Japan but in the world and had a brilliant career on the track as well. Sunday Silence was an AMAZING individual with a truly amazing story. Love his pedigree line and may it live on always!!
Sunday Silence was EXILED from the States because his career was completely injected with illegsl performance enhancement drugs. It was known but the business puckered up fear of there livelihood being threatened but the whispers never went away then the following: publicity of his Vet Harthill prosecuted and banned well known to all in the business but not the naive pretenders on RUclips. Then Vet banned on New York State so Vet can't juice sundaysilence. Then the truth exploded on the Belmont track. Then Alive and Well Jay Hovdey interviewed the Vet Harthill in early 2000s in DRF and he confessed he was doping sundaysilence during his career. You want more? Breeding? When s.s. was there the breeding took off after 2016. Nothing to do with s.s. His breeding during his time was group of basement dwellers. He would not rate in top 100 in the US. All top 200+ here have breeding success. It was the Japanese studying and improving there breeding that took off 15 years after s.s. Plus they kept him alive suffering in pain for 2 years with his illness to try and breed him somemore. CRIMINAL. Your pathetic attempt at storybook ending.

Marilyn Shively - Thank you so much for your kind comments. I did love Sunday Silence, and though many younger people may not remember him, I’ll never forget him. U.S. breeders really got what they deserved for showing no interest in him, but at least he was well cared for and revered in Japan. It sounds like you know a lot about his history. So sad to think that he only lived to 16 - much too young, as you said. Watching him race brought tears to my eyes.
