I know your comment is 11yrs old, but whilst Man O' War was a great horse, Secretariat is the greatest race horse who has ever lived thus far. Secretariat's Triple Crown records still stand more than 50yrs later and will most likely never be beaten.

Totally agree. If I could have, and got to choose, it would have been one of the following: his Belmont, Travers, or Lawrence Realization. Probably his Travers.
See how steady his head was as he passed the finish line? All his energy went into every stride he took. It's something to look for in young horses. They cannot be taught that or forced to do that, they must be born with that desire. Then, if the horse is trained to become fit to race, look out, something very special could be coming out of the starting gate!!!!!
Man O' War they made a movie out of his life but these real life images show what everyone went on about him. Oh my gosh something special this way comes and he knows it. Superhorse..there's only a few and he sure was one. Thanks for passing this on
Man O War was absolutely a great racehorse but if you research his races you will find he faced short fields and inferior competition. This is not an attempt to diminish his accomplishments it was not his fault that the competition was poor and most owners would not run their horses against him. The best horse he faced was Sir Barton whom he defeated handily in a match race. Again I am not trying to belittle him he was far and away the best horse of his time and it is impossible to say how he would have faired against the likes of Dr.Fager , Secretariat, Seattle Slew, Kelso and a host of other modern day racehorses who faced much better and larger fields. I don't question his greatness but I do question people who say he was the best ever.
@@jameskeeney2032 You have to look at all of the evidence. There's a reason why, even to this day almost 100 years later, the majority of racing experts still side with Man O War. His level of competition is debatable for several reasons. Horse racing at this time was the third most popular sport behind Baseball and Boxing. There were more race tracks then, more race horses, and more trainers then there are today. Horse racing has been on the decline for several decades now. Sir Barton lost credibility because of his loss to MOW, but Sir Barton had just broken a World Record several days before their match race. The lack of "big name" thoroughbreds is because he destroyed them. Secretariat for instance, had Sham as a rival because Sham had beaten him prior to the Triple Crown races. Everyone knew Upset beating Man O War was a fluke, hence no rivalry and Upset doesn't become one of the greats like many people believe Sham was.
Jason Wiggins I am not attempting to shortchange Man O War he was hands down the greatest racehorse of his time. You are wrong about the amount of race horses competing at this time it was post WW1 and breeding was very low and the number of horses racing was also very.low. Man O War may well have beaten the best of modern horses that it an argument that can never be settled. It is totally an opinionated subject and every horse racing fan has their own personal preference. I respect your opinion one can only wonder. James Keeney
Yes, thank you for posting.....indeed what an incredible horse Man O' War was....you can just see how awesome this horse was; I think that he along with Secretariat, are the two greatest racehorses ever.....I don't think one was greater than the other, but my personal favorite is Secretariat
The two greatest horses of all time had almost an identical build. I've viewed all the great horses and physically, Man O' War and Secretariat had the most massive (and impressive) builds for racing. They were both physically perfect. Secretariat had something even more special...an enlarged heart that allowed him to increase his speed during a race...no other horse in history has ever matched this feat. That's why he would have beat MOW...what a race that would have been! Thanks for posting!
I have been on the fence for 10 years as to who was the greater horse, Man O' War or Secretariat. But when all is said and done, I believe Man O' War was for two reasons. One, he didn't have the advantage of a starting gate, modern shoes and tracks, which were speed favoring. Yet he set records and dominated the era. Secondly, the quality of his progeny sets him apart from Secretariat. Man O' War was the sire of War Admiral, another great horse. It's a close call, but I have decided finally.
I dont think having a starting gate is any advantage. Using a tape for the starting gate in Man O Wars days may have been an advantage because the horses were not sitting still before they started running. How do you know that the tracks back then were not as fast as the tracks in Secretariat's day? There is no way to measure that and its very hard to compare horses when they raced 40 years apart. They were both the GOATS.
Just like to tell myself MOW and Secretariat are the immovable pillars of the sport. Both handsome chestnuts, champions, great sires. Easier than comparing the two.
@@Psyfi85 that is the best way to look at it. People can argue who was the greatest until they are blue in the face and nobody will ever win the argument. It's the same thing when trying to compare Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods.
Thanks for the posting, Carly. Man O' War' and his very longtime groom, Will Harbut,, had such a special bond, and it shows in the videos. They seemed to truly love and respect each other.

When I was a child my grandfather had it hanging in his attic and I would always beg him to let me have the picture. He would tell me "some day I will let you have it."He made me wait till I was almost 13 before he finally gave in and gave it to me. What a happy day that was! Wow and that was a long, long time ago! I always wondered how long he had it for...What a great horse!
I enjoyed my visit to the Ky Horse Park a few years ago and seeing the grave and statue of Man O' War.The two Reds now in heaven together with all the other greats.
Just looking at that big body full of muscles and that deep deep chest, you can tell right off this horse was built for speed. As was Secretariat. I don't know who would have won a match race between the two if that were possible. I think we'll have to just be content with two superhorses in the same century. Its such a treat to see man o war here!
We'll never know what he could have done. He was held back every race, was just at a canter on the last race at the finish line. Wish a modern movie made of him like Seabiscuit
I just want to put in a plug for Native Dancer. The Great Dancer won 21 of 22 races and must be listed among the All-Time greats. He is often forgotten by people who make these lists but you can't keep him off any true list of greats.
Native dancer can't hold a candle to man o war. Native dancer also has a very bad legacy in that many of his blood line have crap legs. You seriously couldn't give me a horse with him in the bloodline.
I was at 'Alamo Pintado' vet clinic the other day and saw the most beautiful painting of Man O War and his groom... it was titled "Friends Forever". I recognized Man O War instantly. Why is it that the grooms seem to love the horses most of all? What a horse! :~) Thanks for posting.
Won a stakes race by 100 lengths.WHAT? The other horses must have all broken their legs ,or the rest were having a Sham moment.Man o War also beat the triple crown winner by 7 lengths.
@@single55 the horse Man O War beat by 100 lengths didnt even know how to race and he was the only horse in the field besides Man O War. It was a match race.
@@TimesUp777 It was not a match race. Man O' War was running really well and had easily beaten the American record for a mile and a half in a workout days before the race (carrying 130 pounds), scaring away all but one horse, War Mint. Then the owner of War Mint decided to withdraw him only one hour before the race. Back then, if only one horse ran, the purse was cut in half. So Mr. Riddle's niece entered her horse Hoodwink to prevent that. He wasn't very good and had run the day before so the 100 lengths isn't that big a deal. What was a big deal was that running on his own and with instructions not to push him, he broke the American record by over 4 seconds and the world record by 1 3/5 seconds
Thanks for this video. I loved Man O' War as a girl, read about him in my Heroic Horses book and never forgot it... great to see all this old footage years later is still awesome and inspiring. I love the way you spliced it together.
Man-O-War was a great horse, one of the best. The footage is a treasure to behold and thanks for sharing. The only way to compare horses from different eras, is by the clock. A mirror doesn't lie, nor does a clock. Secretariat was the best horse....ever.
My husband and I went to Kent. to see his grave site so I could see his statue which is life size and in the process, saw Secretariat in Person! For the time period he lived in and condition of the tracks, he was and will always be the Greatest Horse of the Century! I was born the year he died and wish I could have seen him in his prime though secretariat was his protege, the apple not falling far from the tree was fantastic too!
Oh wow, thank you for this amazing vid. You know someone is your best pal when the only thing that can seperate you is death- Willie and Big Red, a pair for the ages.
My great great great grandparents love this horse. What a career and what an awesome racehorse. He and Secretariat share the bloodline of Fair Play, who sired MOW. I dont mind if Sec lost to MOW in the ranking of the greatest racehorses. They share the same bloodline anyway. What is sad though is, everytime i see a list of top sires, I dont see Fair Play in the list.I see Bold Ruler,Seattle Slew, Nasrullah. Slew came from Bold Ruler line and Bold Ruler came from Fair Play too. Seabiscuit was also a grandson of Fair Play. Why is this great sire ignored in those lists?
@Smogger911 nonsense. Its because Fair Play blood is so diluted that it is effectively gone. Just see what happens in 50 years from now with your precious Native Dancer. He already is obsolete. No one cares, you have to breed to living stallions. With each breeding, a stallion somewhere back on the papers becomes less and less viable. This is just a fact.
Man O' War - simply the greatest. Look at his hindquarters and the way he was put together in front. It is said he bounded along, he ran high and LONG....his stride was huge....He was built for speed AND stamina. His line is known for its stamina and soundness.
He's so reminiscent of Secretariat in appearance! Same beautiful color, even down to the white star and thin strip down his nose. Both were nicknamed 'Big Red' had both had large hearts by comparison to others. Hmm...could it be? Never mind.
Only two horses in history had superior structure and muscle for racing, Man O' War and Secretariat. Physically, they were in a different league than all other race horses. That's why it was so easy for them to break world records. If raced against each other, Secretariat would have won. He INCREASED his speed as he raced, no other horse in history has been able to duplicate that feat. But what a great video of MOW...LOVED IT. Thank you for sharing!! Great horse!!!
Northern Dancer was from Native Dancer. Native Dancer is also in the line of "Fair Play". The more i looked into the pedigree of the great horses, Fair Play is in almost all of them. This includes 5 TCW's and almost every horse that won two legs of the TC. Fair Play was the sire of Man O War and probably the best sire ever. Fair Play is almost the only line that all the great horses have in common, usually from Man O War, Display, Discovery, Miss Disco, or Geisha.
Greatest ever racehorse! As for sire; no pony can compare with Northern Dancer! Everytime I visit Woodbine in Toronto I have to touch his staue's ears..Always brought me luck..
There can not be the Greatest of all time. There can only be the Greatest of their time. Man O' War was that. Secretariat was that. Let's celebrate all of their achievements!
What a magnificent horse. Now I understand the comparison's between him and Secretariat. Unfortunately, for us humans, only God knows who was the truly better horse,. Maybe neither,. They are both greats.
carly -- your horseracing clips are works of art. Particularly those you have done on Man O' War; quite moving. I am old enough to have seen the likes of Kelso and Secretariat and Affirmed in person. If I am reading it correctly and you are only 16, you have not only great skill but amazing perspective. Thank you so much for your posts on these magnificent horses.
To this day...only 2 horses were physically in a different league than all other race horses....Man O' War & Secretariat. They were far superior in build and muscle tone. Facially, Man O' War was handsome. Secretariat was absolutely breath-taking. When you compare their physiques to all other race horses throughout history, it's not even close. Man O' War & Secretariat stood out from the rest. Still do:-)
When a racehorse dies, the tradition is that his head, heart, and hooves are buried in a box. But Man-o-war was granted the rare honor of being buried as a whole horse. Incidentally, his heart was about twice as large as that of other racehorses. It was the most important "extra" he possessed, besides his will to win.
thanks so much for posting this...as a longtime student of HorseRacing lore & legends, its a thrill to see Actual footage of the original "Big Red" :) never even knew there was anything other than some grainy racing footage in existence....so thank you thank you for sharing!
I am proud to say I own a descendent of Man O War. Tunnies Real Cab, aka Barney, has that same temprament as Big Red, and at age 21, has slowed down only a wee bit. Great footage!!
@evyn10014 people also always forget about Native Dancer (because he wasn't the first great horse, and because he didn't win the triple crown)....Secretariat was phenomenal no doubt, but he's not the only amazing horse in the past century :). Ruffian was also an amazing horse, and Secretariat's own trainer said he had no doubt she could have beaten him. They are all a pleasure to behold :) MOW will always be my favorite ♥
very nice vid, I love it! My favourite racehorse along with Ruffian. What a handsome and powerful looking boy, it's like he would know how good he was.
Wow!! What an EXCELLENT video! I had no idea that so much GOOD footage was available. You have done a great job bringing the original Big Red back to life! And the score you set it to does him justice. Great job!!!
Man O' War is one of my favorite horses, followed closely by his son, War Admiral. They were both great horses and there will never be another family like Fair Play- Man O' War- War Admiral
Man O War, Seabiscuit, War Admiral, American Pharoah. What a pedigree. I always thought Secretariat was in the fold as well, but apparently is a descendant of Man O War’s half-brother, Display.
Secretariat had Man O War on both sides, so not surprised he was a great racer, but he sucked as a sire. All things considered, Man O War would have kicked Sec's ass!!
Almost all say that Man O' War is the greatest racehorse in history - All panels of racing experts have Man O' War the greatest, including Associated Press, Sports Illustrated and Bloodhorse. Not to mention an infinite number of other racing experts, horsemen etc.
I watched Secretariat when he ran and a couple of times was privileged to see him run in person. Among the other horses he looked so much heavier then the rest. Watch any of his races. Just notice the thickness of his neck next to the other horses. He looks like a horse who has been retired a few years. Just bigger but definitely muscular.
@@brocklanders6969 You'll have to do better than that. He didn't race the triple crown, but he destroyed the triple crown winner Sir Barton just weeks after Barton broke a World Record. Man O' War retired with more track records, American records, and World Records than the smaller, slower, and the horse with a shorter stride, Secretariat. Also, shoes were lighter, tracks were significantly faster, and steroids were prevalent by the 70's. Secretariat also lost five races and was nothing compared to Man O' War's stud record. Almost every American Thoroughbred comes from Man O' War including multiple triple crown winners. There is absolutely NO contest and these and many other reasons are why the vast majority of horse racing experts named Man O' War Horse of the Century. FACTS. Try again.

he may not be the greatest horse, but seabiscuits story is the greatest one
Such a beautiful horse. He will be missed!
My favorite! Ruffian is my favorite mare, Nothing like them
He's so reminiscent of Secretariat in appearance! Same beautiful color, even down to the white star and thin strip down his nose. Both were nicknamed 'Big Red' had both had large hearts by comparison to others. Hmm...could it be? Never mind.
I love him -never forgotten.
Such magnificence!! ❤🔥❤🔥❤🔥
The Great One....Love my Horses! I miss the rides through the Sisters Mountains in Oreon with Laurie
MAN O WAR IS THE BEST RACE HORSE EVA
No way not even close....mebay 2nd best ever
@@samgaudino1698 The records prove your opinions to be inaccurate.
Greatest ever racehorse! As for sire; no pony can compare with Northern Dancer! Everytime I visit Woodbine in Toronto I have to touch his staue's ears..Always brought me luck..
Great video of The Greatest Of All Time
Never gets old seeing Man O War.
Thank you so much for your posts on these magnificent horses.
this unbelievable creature was simply born to be a champion. nothin else to say. hes gorgeous *-*
Still do:-)
He was a so amazing Horse.
Man o' War
When a racehorse dies, the tradition is that his head, heart, and hooves are buried in a box. But Man-o-war was granted the rare honor of being buried as a whole horse. Incidentally, his heart was about twice as large as that of other racehorses. It was the most important "extra" he possessed, besides his will to win.
Man O' War was one of the best racehorses ever, no horse could ever have been so fast and still be held in reserve. Red was truly an american hero
I love how you used the score of Apollo 13 for your video.
thanks so much for posting this...as a longtime student of HorseRacing lore & legends, its a thrill to see Actual footage of the original "Big Red" :) never even knew there was anything other than some grainy racing footage in existence....so thank you thank you for sharing!
They are all a pleasure to behold :) MOW will always be my favorite ♥
thanks so much for putting this up! I love the footage too Carly!
He is and always shall be The Mostest Hoss that ever was.
very nice vid, I love it!
Thank you. Beautiful video. The greatest racehorse of all time!
So beautiful and amazing thank you for sharing.
Another wonderful thoroughbred video from you as always.
Grazie per queste stupende e rarissime immagini di questo magnifico cavallo.
Man O' War is one of my favorite horses, followed closely by his son, War Admiral. They were both great horses and there will never be another family like Fair Play- Man O' War- War Admiral
Man o war was a legend ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
stunning footage!!!! thank you for making it; it made me happy too!
Man O War, Seabiscuit, War Admiral, American Pharoah. What a pedigree. I always thought Secretariat was in the fold as well, but apparently is a descendant of Man O War’s half-brother, Display.
I don't get why Sec fans bash MOW or MOW fans beat up on Sec... In my opinion, Sec was a reincarnation of MOW.
+Ash Mule so true
+Ash Mule share the same bloodline and they look very similar.share same markings in the face.
They are both beautiful racehorses. Both were very fast and had world records.
Secretariat had Man O War on both sides, so not surprised he was a great racer, but he sucked as a sire. All things considered, Man O War would have kicked Sec's ass!!
And the reincarnation of sectretariat might be Ap? I think Ruffian reincarnated to black Caviar.
Great live footage!!! Thanks for posting:-)
Man O War was the creature of creatures. What a Noble horse he was.....
Seemed to be very much loved. Don't think he ever raced all out - with out being held back!
Best Ever!!! I have him number 1, then the great Secreteriat, Seattle Slew, hell, I'll even throw my personal fav.... Cigar....
Nice Cigar reference!!
Amazing horse, grandson of the legendary British thoroughbred Rock Sand (16 wins from 20 starts)
Awesome Video of The 1st Big Red !! Thanks for providing this video! I enjoyed it very much :)
Thanks so much for posting this!!! Great music to accompany unbelievable videos!!
"He was the mostest horse"
horse of the millenium, not century!
This is... the story of Thoroughbred!
Man O' War, the greatest ever!
The 2nd best ever
@@samgaudino1698 Nope, without a doubt first and the records prove it. That's why the vast majority of racing experts side with Man O' War.
Horse i Love
@@jasonwiggins6137 Didn't win the TC. Times all slower the Sec, thus he is 2nd best.
FACTS. Try again.
I wish I knew what part of faraway farm he was foaled at and where the house once stood.
