Manny, the ultimate equine "big red".....rest in peace you ground breaking, soulful & heartful warrior. Never again shall be seen in our lifetimes a horse of such grandeur.........
I fell in love with horse racing after reading Walter Farley's story of Man o' War. He is the wonder horse of racing and the mightiest on the American racecourse
Great video.A reflection of PURE horse racing talent. Man O' War - the real deal. The benchmark to which all others will be compared. Greatness never to be forgotten.
Man O' War - the Mostest Hoss - such a good job on this vid - thank you. He has been my hero horse my entire life - such heart. If you've ever been to the Horse Park to see him and jumped to keep up with his amazing stride, you will have gotten goose bumps. There was just something about that gorgeous, huge, raw Stayer. God Bless him.
Big, Beautiful Red, head held high, mane gathered in yellow and black beribboned braids to honour his owner Sam Riddle's stable colours.......such a spirited, ferocious horse, never the likes of to be seen again......RIP Man O' War, you are a true equine inspiration!
Man O'War was a true legendary race horse. In all his career he only lost once and it was the jocky's fault since he didn't turn his steed around fast enough. He was by far the greatest race horse of all time in his days. Now and days, who knows who is the next legendary and "new" man o'war will be. All I want is to have a horse with man o'war or seabiscuit's blood flowing through his/her veins, just to be the next generation.
its the big step up in knowledge of feeds, shoeing etc that makes such a big difference, that shows how truely amazing and tough and how much heart these horses really had. Why make comparisons, why not just recognise them all for the champs they were and still are to this day!
Manny had a perfect form and constitution........all parts in balance and so well formed & presented. It's no wonder that his legacy lives on in so many of his family members. He is the blueprint for what a champion racehorse would be in the 20th century. Long live his memory! I love you Man O' War!
Well done again, Carly! Your videos are almost professional like. I wouldn't be surprised if you were in production/TV. These clips are priceless, thanks for sharing. Man O' War ... "He wuz the mostest hoss!" ;-)
You can have your Seattle Slews and your Seabiscuits, your Citations and your Secretariats, but if you ask me the greatest racehorse of all time was Man o' war. No horse can ever best him.
I saw the graves of Man 'O War and his trainer at the Ky Horse Park a few years ago.Its great they are buried side by side. They had statues of Man and Secretariat,Man 'O War was a bigger horse.
Secretariat set records in all 3 triple crown races which still stand today.. Several of his defeats can be attributed to being severely bumped, 2 fevers, and a mouth abscess. With all that he still finished in the money. That being said, MOW was a tremendous Horse with an indisputable record. He raced after World War 1 and instilled the spirit of victory and championship into all who love horse racing. Let us not diminish the greatness of either horse by comparing them. If they raced against each other, I think I it would break my heart to see either one lose to the other. They are both eternal champions in their own time, we should just treasure that , but wow, what a thought !
Secretariat was jacked-up on anabolic steroids while setting his records. Steroids were allowed on race day until 2008, when Eight Belles broke both front legs in the Derby. Read, "They used to call him Sexy" in Sports Illustrated, 1974. Man o' War was chosen Horse of the Century by the racing experts for good reason. Secretariat raced on steroids, never carried weight and lost 4 times.
@@AbigailMilamProductions Sadly, his heart was enlarged because of the steroids. Many TBs carry the large heart Gene. However, it is not healthy or desirable to have a super sized heart. These are wonderful videos you have put together. Thanks. On another note, I know we all have our favorites and debating who was best is fun. But some of the "expert analysis" given just points out how little many know about horse racing. PLEASE, stop throwing out Secretariat's times and saying they "prove" he was the greatest or that they prove he was 20 lengths, etc. in front of MOW or Count Fleet or whoever. Anybody who knows racing knows that comparing times from 20, 30, or in the case of MOW, 53 years apart is absurd. Just allowing for improvements in tracks and equipment theoretically makes the old-timers times 3-4 seconds faster (note theoretically, since we can never test that). Man o' War, Count Fleet, Citation, and others totally demolished their opponents, and blew away the times being run on the tracks they were running on. At least in Man o' War's case, he was eased up and even held back in every race he ever ran but two (his loss and the 1920 Dwyer against John P. Grier, who was a good horse carrying only 108), so his times could have been much faster still. Incidentally, it wasn't as much to spare other horse owners feelings as much as to prevent taking more out of MOW for races down the road- that's smart training. Any records Big Red set, he did on his own, without being asked. He also carried 130 or more pounds 10 times, 7 times at age two, still setting stakes, track, American, and World marks. No numerous races that all have to be excused away, either. The bottom line is that we all have personal favorites, there have been many great horses, a hand-full of truly all-time greats, and nobody anywhere can PROVE who was best. They should all be appreciated. And the people who post these wonderful videos do so in order that we can see and appreciate things we might never be able to otherwise. Sorry for the rant, but I've seen too many of these video comments taken over by people who want to put down the horse that is featured.
Man O War still lives within our hearts and will forever as the absolute greatest racehorse that ever graced our land. He continues to hold his head high as he never will be replaced.

Threats of higher weights and physical problems were the reasons for his retirement. In any event, Man O'War had more than proved himself by defeating the best available competition and setting a number of records along the way.
@quadripper74 For some inexcusable reason, no motion picture about the life of the great horse exists. One can only hope that Disney will crank out a 3rd horse movie.
Actually, hardly anyone except racing enthusiasts known or even heard of him. Nowadays, football and baseball are the only "cool" sports, so people probably have only heard of Seabiscuit. Some twits at my school don't even know he was a racehorse. But yes, Man O' War was amazing.
What an awesome video CK. Man O' War and Secretariat were both THE Super Horses of there times. I have always been partial to Secretariat because I was born in 1973, but to say he could beat Man O' War would be impossible. It would be an awesome race to watch.
I was interested in horses and nature for as long as I can remember. Though for a long time I wanted to work at Australia Zoo with Steve Irwin. I loved reptiles. And Steve was my hero. In 2004 I read Walter Farley's book on MOW, became a fan. Next day was the AK Derby and Bluegrass. Been a fan of Smarty Jones and The Cliff's Edge ever since. Saw Tapit in the post parade, and he was the first horse I really loved.
People can talk about times all they want but the horse that would win is the one that had the greatest will to win and that's Man 'O War. 20 wins and only one loss because he had a lousy start and was boxed in or else he would have easily won that one too. That's shows an extraordinary will to win. Secreteriat has 16 wins out of 21 races. That's great of course but not extraordinary. So if they were to race Man 'O War would do whatever necessary to be over that finish line first. I'm sure of it
Oh, God, I love this, the music is perfect, done with a very loving hand, carly. He was magnificent. There are also some beautiful pictures of him on Secretariat.com, including the portraint his owner considered the best one of him, I think you showed it.
Man O' War could have won the derby from any post if he had been allowed to race. His owner felt a soft boned 3 year old shouldn't race in early May. If he had only knew. He woke up and let War Admiral run the derby and see what he did. Man O' War was the most dominant Thoroughbred in horseracing history.
man o' war was a racing hero! i bet he is known everywhere! he seems so amazing, it would be nice to own a horse like him. seabiscuit was pretty cool, my friend's eventer is a descendant of him.
You go Carly..Excellent....You create such great videos with music...wish you would tell us a little about yourself. When did you first become interested in horses? And things of that nature...thanks again...
I would like to tell my Man O' War story again. The schools would take the children to see Man O War. They would form a long line and each would get a chance to pet Man O War. My mother would pet him and then she would run as fast as she could to sneak back in line and pet him again! I often wondered if anyone knew she did that? But with her Carrot colored hair she said the Grooms eyes were smiling at her and she thinks its because she and Big Red looked alike! A lovely memory for her and me.
Just watched again, what a magnificent beast, huge nostrils to take in a LOT of oxygen. Will looks like such a kind man, I'll be he knew how to talk softly and gentle him. I love that long graceful neck.
I agree, Secretariat was something of a freak of nature in terms of his Triple Crown achievements and in particular his Belmont record. The style of racing was just so different back in MOW's day, and race horses have really been bred up since then, but Man O' War is for sure a big part of the foundation of modern racing thoroughbreds.
Because when you typed in manowar (band), it pulled up one of the greatest horse that ever lived to race on a track. His name was Man O' War, more powerful and famous than the band you were looking for called Manowar. When this band fades away, This Man O' War will still be remembered in the sports world along with Secretariat as the two greatest racehorses EVER.
So true, Secretariat was something else. He was just such a beefy thoroughbred compared to most horses of the breed, and he did have a heart that was over twice the size of normal. Probably helped maintain that super-speed of his. Ruffian might have been a horse that could've gotten to his level, if she hadn't had that very unfortunate accident so early in her career. Never got to have her big day, like Sec' did at the Belmont.
If Man O' War stopped to watch a plane fly in the middle of a race, that's funny. I will research that, but brings up something else the two horses had in common. I heard in a doc about Secretariat that he too stopped in the middle of walking around a crowd to look up at you got it, a plane. When I was a teen, I loved Sec and watched him on tv. Would of loved to of seen him and MOW. Both were so amazing. Very few ever like those two. Both were loved very much by many, I love them both.
haha, well I've never been to that area of the country so I have no idea. But all I do know is they only footage of him raing that I know of is the match
All the more impressive for Secretariat - he had no competition and still shattered the record by nearly three seconds and still retains this record, a world record no one has come close to for 39 years.
yes, 80cathryn, Secretariat's time was 2:24 which few horses have run, period. I was referring to the winning margin. Everyone acts like 31 lengths is the second coming but 25 lengths is just ho hum. Secretariat's times were fast and he was a great horse.
Man o' War did hold a record until Kelso, I think. Which was about 40 or so years. And i think he still has a record that has never been broken, but tied. Granted, Secretariat hasn't been around for more than 80 years so that can't be a point, just yet
Some of these photos must be from a private family collection. Many look like they were taken at the farm by the Groom or the family. The one photo where he’s an advanced age standing looking at the camera with his bridle on. They still put his bridle on and rode him when he was old. That’s really cool.
To Carly Kaiser - 2nd comment. Actually, I just found the Secretariat video. It's on You Tube and entitled Secretariat Running from Within. Although I appreciate Secretariat and appreciate him as a great race horse, my favorite remains Man O' War.
I'd like to see him run in the Derby of 1920, because he never got the chance. Louis Fuestal, his trainer, did not think he was ready. Paul Jones won that year.
You know it's funny, both were called Big Red, they both had the white star (or mark) on their heads and both were chestnuts. Someone in this blog noted God sends a special horse every so often. I would agree. Both were very special.
@Tyvion12 Exactly...that is why comparing speeds is no way to compare horses...Longden said the same about the Count, and Eddie about Cy (Jones told him simply to win the race...that's all Wright was interested in. You can see Eddie reining him in at several points...)
My late gelding has him waaaay back in his pedigree.. Man O' War is one of my all time favorite racers, next to one of his great great great great (about 10 greats later) grandsons Go Man Go, and his great grandson Mango Irish (my late gelding) :) Man O' War only lost one race is his time:) When I am onlder and looking for fast stock, they will look like him:)
To be fair, there are other factors at play. Horses still had heavy iron shoes in MOW's day, and track surface technologies and training methods have also vastly improved. There's just such a huge gap in the timeline that it's difficult to compare the two horses fairly.
Yes. I never denied that. That does not mean he was backwards at the start. It means he was stuck on the rail, a hrose infront and to the side of him during the race.
@dunsta69 Experts have already done it. Of course, a precise comparison may be difficult, but not entirely. Experts concluded, that Secretariat was selected second to ManO'War. This was only partly due to Secretariat never carrying more than 126 pounds. MOW , as a baby, broke records carrying weights at distances that were unheard of. Mature horses of today don't even carry those weights.
Citation won 19 races as a 3 year old which was just one race shy of Man O War's career total and three wins more than Secretariat's career total. Is there any possible way that either Secretariat or Man O War was good enough to win 19 races at age 3? Kelso won Horse of the Year for 5 consecutive years, set world records for 2 miles on dirt and 1 1/2 miles on turf within the span of just 11 days, won the Jockey Club Gold Cup for 5 consecutive years beginning at age 3, carried more than 130 pounds in more races than Secretariat or Man O War even ran in, and dominated the best horses in the country for 5 straight years. Was either Man O War or Secretariat good enough to accomplish what Kelso did?
Disagree on who's the greatest, but he was certainly GREAT. And it's a REALLY nice video. For those who don't know, in that one race no one would face him, so his owner's niece entered a horse against him, and he is said to have beat it by 100 lengths or more. That's not a knock though - everyone was still scared to race him. What he did to Triple Crown winner Sir Barton was very impressive. He should've been a TC winner too, but didn't run the Derby. Too bad he didn't come along a bit later!
@rscarbro100 Others would disagree which is the beauty of horse racing. I don't care, I love them both. Two champion chestnuts. Interesting stat re. MOW - In his last 10 starts he had an average of 1.5 opponents. They weren't exactly queuing up to race against him...
@1948BigCy My heart will alway belong to Secretariat - just perfection and brilliance in every way to me. However, all of them - Man O' War, etc., had real class. Any other year, Sham would have been the Triple Crown Winner, and I'm just sorry that he isn't mentioned more in the history books of great race horses. I was very surprised and disappointed that he wasn't chosen as one of the top 100 horses of the century. I loved him, also.
schardy, i'm preaching to the choir, but the point is to celebrate these amazing animal athletes and what they've managed to accomplish doing NOT what comes naturally, but what humans have asked of them. man o war and secretariat were both miracles, in a world that has far too few.
@lloydlorraine MOW himself won the Belmont by 20 lengths as well, nothing to scoff at and he wasn't being hard ridden either. He also wore iron shoes not the aluminum shoes that horses wear now (and Sec wore then).
One other thing Carly, My friend Dorothy Brown owned ElBaba and Liscapade...Liscapade won the Ky Derby Prep and would have won the KY Derby but the Trainer did not pay the hundred dollar fee and was ineligible. I cannot find anything on ElBaba...who was more notable...winning the Run for the Orchids.
Please check on history, as well as Andy Beyer's Speed Figure books. Things have changed that can make times better. The horses definitely by 1900 if not a bit earlier were essentially the same. These horses dealt with very different circumstances, many easier c.1970 than '20. MOW set 10 time records - a phenomenal % of his races (8 in 1 season) w/margins to indicate high Figures. Basically never lost even with good excuses. MOW's 1-5/8 time on dirt was faster than Sec's time on turf.
good video! the race man o' war lost to he was boxed in and started the race facing backwards...and they did have the triple crown back then cuz sir barton won it..
@Rescuebroke Don't worry about bursting my bubble...I've been interviewed on T.V., been on commercials, photographed for ads, and was in NY Magazine. And I currently run a company. MOW was my favorite horse until Secretariat came along...and we all saw the "magic" of something that still has an effect on people 37 years later. Disney was apparently also impressed. They have a movie coming out this year on Secretariat. Go figure.
To Carly Kaiser: I recently read your comments about Man O' War on The Blood Horse website. I wonder if you ever saw a particularly impressive and rare clip of Man O' War that I recently saw. In a You Tube video entitled: "Keeneland Magazine Man O' War Spring 2017" at 2:07 Will Harbut is seen turning Man O' War out to pasture. He just took off like a rocket and went tearing across the grass. A few months earlier, I had seen a similar clip of Secretariat bein turned lose in pasture. I have not been able to find that one again so I can't refer you to that one. But it was interesting to compare the two clips.
Man O' War was so fast, no one would race against him, they wouldn't enter or anything. That must've been a pretty fast horse, I wish I could see him race.
@schardy80 Thank you. Someone reasonable for a change. Love the Doctor is there a more underrated horse out there? His mile record still stands and he had Damascus to contend with. I stated on another page Fager would beat Secretariat in a mile race and all the Secretariat groupies had a fit. There are some serious horse-crushes going on on these pages...

Man O' War was the most dominant Thoroughbred in horseracing history.
man o' war was a racing hero!
i bet he is known everywhere!
he seems so amazing, it would be nice to own a horse like him. seabiscuit was pretty cool, my friend's eventer is a descendant of him.
Thank you ...your presentation was lovely....
Its called "Man O' War" and written by Page Cooper and, Roger L. Treat. if you go to amazonDOTcom, and search Man O' War, its easy to find
Thank you for that wonderful account!
True, I forget heard of him when I read a book about one of his many sons in which was seabiscuit. I then read books on man o'war.
ManO'War, The Greatest Ever!
Some of these photos must be from a private family collection. Many look like they were taken at the farm by the Groom or the family. The one photo where he’s an advanced age standing looking at the camera with his bridle on. They still put his bridle on and rode him when he was old. That’s really cool.
I have a few videos with footage of him, if you want to see him. (I know, not the same as in person)
"Poor"?
He died when he was 30 of a heart attack, a month after his beloved groom Will Harbut died
@1948BigCy Arcaro himself said Native Dancer was the greatest horse he ever rode....lol there are so many greats :)
To be fair, there are other factors at play. Horses still had heavy iron shoes in MOW's day, and track surface technologies and training methods have also vastly improved. There's just such a huge gap in the timeline that it's difficult to compare the two horses fairly.
Such a Great Horse!
War Admiral was without a doubt his best foal. On the flat.
Secretariat didn't race at 4 either, doesn't diminish him at all.
well done video of the son of fair Play- Mahuba, by Rock Sand.
Very beautiful video! Great job :)
What is the name of this musical piece/sound track? Love it!
I could not tell you why someone else put this in that playlist.
Never thought it would be a compliment to call someone a freak, but Man O' War was.
schardy, i'm preaching to the choir, but the point is to celebrate these amazing animal athletes and what they've managed to accomplish doing NOT what comes naturally, but what humans have asked of them. man o war and secretariat were both miracles, in a world that has far too few.
There is actualy a lot, yes short, but there is some. Hard to find on the interent though.
@bbmtge Manowar was never allowed to run full except once--the race he lost. Always pulled up because the race was over at the half.
your heart shines...thanks a lot,alex :o) jim
It's from the film Spirit: Stallion of the Cimmeron.
It's from the movie, "Rudy"
@RachelAlexandra101 True, however Man o' war defeated the same horse on many other occasions.
hey great vid!
What is the music score?
Man O' War was so fast, no one would race against him, they wouldn't enter or anything. That must've been a pretty fast horse, I wish I could see him race.
You cannot compare horses across eras. All you can do is dominate your era - Man O'War certainly did that
@schardy80 Thank you.
