Kid came down way too hard on the horses back and yes that can cause lameness which can become permanent if not caught and managed early

Depends, horses have sensitive skin. I have had horses, and when you belt them they feel it on a higher level than you do as a human. And in a race not every horse needs to be belted. Look at secretariat that horse has records that still stand and that horse didn't need to be hit or "motivated"
