  • This ice cream freezer and 1923 International Harvester Throttle-Governed McCormick-Deering Model M 1-1/2 HP rig was assembled about 1990 by the late Alex Chunn of Waco, Texas. It originally had a White Mountain freezer that lasted until about 2008 when Alex put a Country Freezer in its place. The trailer was initially used to haul a midget race car. The gearbox make and origins are unknown. The drive shaft is a section of chain-link fence top-rail. Alex, a longtime member of the Texas Early Day Tractor & Engine Association could be found making Ice Cream, Sherbet & Frozen Margaritas at various Texas Engine and Tractor shows.
Today, Rusty Steed of Waco, Texas carries on the tradition by making Orange Sherbet at the Good Of The Land Fest at the Old Mill Pond Museum in Lindale, Texas. November 17, 2018

What a fun looking place! The engine is really amazing too. Correct me if I am wrong but was that engine originally hut and miss? Or was it designed to fire every time?

All IHC M engines were throttle-governed; meaning the governor actuates the throttle depending on the load. Hit and miss engine pop one or two times then chuff for a while when not under heavy load. In a hit and miss engine there is no rocker arm on the intake valve, so when it's up to speed, the governor holds the exhaust valve open. Any gas burning, throttle-governed engine without with only one rocker arm can be converted to run like that without too much fabrication.

A poorly tuned throttle governed engine may behave like a hit 'n miss engine.

If you attend the Temple, Texas tractor and engine show the first full weekend in October, odds are you might get a sample.
