Learning the technique for single tonguing can be very useful! What are your strengths and weakness when tonguing? Let me know down below in the comments! Be sure to like and subscribe if you haven't already! Check out Double Tonguing Video as well!
The Flute Channel hi , thank you for the video . I am not clear what you meant when you talked about a ‘Back one and front one’ I am guessing that means the position of the tongue would you please explain more? Also do you do you use a certain syllable when single tonging and what part of the tongue makes contact with the reed .
Thanks very much !!
Wow! Is it for split notes, but save these solid? Easy and genious.
Hi to you Amelie,
I have just started to learn the Flute, i always tongue when i play is that right, i seem to do it behind my top front teeth, Is that ok to do it like that?
Just to add from what i've watched of you so far i love how you teach.🎵
it was very useful
great job
I can do the tongue demonstrations without the flute, but when I try to tongue while im playing, I immediately lose sound and the note turns airy and the sound doesn't sound full
I have the same problem right now and I don't know what to do. My tonge can't reach my lips when I play, and when I tongue at the back of my teeth my note turns to air.
@@TaeTot13 bro same I play clarinet and this articulation style is so new to me 😭
SAME I NEED HELP
Sad
When I play notes I feel like I’m not tonguing. It sounds like it’s coming from my throat and can hear it.. Does this happen to anyone else?
Yes, hope the progress is going well for you!
It means you need to relax
I used to think I was double tonguing because I can do a really fast single tongue. I find double and triple tonguing really easy without the flute but once I try it with the flute it doesn’t seem to work. What am I doing wrong? Any suggestions on how to fix this would be much appreciated.
This is the most helpful flute tutorial on youtube.
Really happy you enjoyed it red!
Why am I practicing along with her ? I don't play the flute, lol !
i’ve been playing the flute since 8th grade, i joined marching band in 9th (which was really hard, i wasn’t taught well in 8th so i basically taught myself all the high notes and stuff) while being in marching band i noticed my tonguing was weird and it was making me tongue slower, i tongue way behind my teeth, if you touch your mouth you’ll touch these “bumps”, that’s where i tongue. whenever i practice it, i actually tongue behind my teeth, but whenever i play in my flute my tongue goes back to that weird place, so i have to change it to the one behind my teeth which sounds airy and some notes don’t even come out. when i tongue in that weird place it does sound good, but tonguing is kind of hard and really slow, i’ve asked a lot of people, including my directors, but they don’t know what the problem is. do y’all know how i could fix it? :((
Emily, at 3.40 in the video you say “..... I practice it fist with the front one then the back one ... “. I don’t get it.
Is “the front one” the method using the grain of rice? Thanks, Peter
BTW a great video which helps a lot.
thank you so much for this vid, it was really useful, I've watched a bunch of vids and couldn't really do it until now, the keeping the air stream continuous was extremely helpful
awesome glad we can help! thanks for watching!
Ohhh!! Tonguing for flute! Didn't catch that.. saw tonguing and clicked! Because I feel my tonguing technique is adequate, but if you had any tips I was ready to listen! But yeah, I don't play flute... watched the whole video though! Would recommend!
Wonderful!
@@flutechannel I might have to take up flute. Did you know that you're very cute? Such a bright face with those dancing eyes! Btw, while we're chatting, wanted to let you know I did watch the Herman Beeftink "Spring" performance that you did - it was breath taking! I had to pick up my guitar and absorb some of those melodies and movements. They are more challenging than they appear! I do not subscribe to many YT channels, but you are indeed making my knees weak... I do not know how much longer I can resist... be well and safe tata
I use the tongue at the back of the teeth method, however, I have now started moving the tongue even further back in the higher register. Came here from recent podcast.
It seems like I either have a good tone or I can tongue properly. I learned that the technique I’ve been using is “French tonguing “, between the lips. Does it matter if I do it that way? If i articulate with my tongue at the top-behind of my teeth I will have to learn to play all over again as my mouth will need to relearn every embouchure. Does this make sense? Can it possibly be correct? I am teaching myself for more than a year so no teacher to ask. Thanks.
DO you need to tongue in every note that you make?
I was wondering when you need to know when you need to tongue.
i used to tongue using the first method with your tongue in the front all the time... it kinda sucks to play super fast and staccato music now. I'm trying to get myself into the habit of using the second method with the tongue behind the teeth but its been pretty hard to push my tongue back so far.
I can’t control my tongue I tend to double tongue it’s like I can’t slur then tongue fast and I’m gonna have a concert soon and the music is called March Of the Belgian Paratroopers 😔
When I'am playing I feel like I don't use tongue at all, like the sound comes from my throat, and I don't know is that bad or good. Can someone explain that to me, please?
Im new in here and i want to learn sp much! I like this Channel im going to play the flute.
Sorry my english is bad😂😀
I actually dont tongue at all and instead use the back of my throat to stop the air and i dont know if i should change that and i need advice about this please help!
You should consider learning this way as well. You'll see that it's way more efficient and you'll breather easier as well. Better flute tone as well.
@@flutechannel ok thank you!
@@midorisakurai1912 I never realized that I was doing the same thing as you until I watched this video. You're not alone!
DO you need to tongue in every note that you make?
Not for legato
When do we single tongue? What are some musical examples that people have performed with single tonguing
Thank you!!! Appreciate your valuable lesson on tonguing.
Thank you ma'am that was really helpful 😊
Glad to hear that! thanks for watching!
I know how to tongue it’s just that our music is called March of the Belgian paratroopers and I can’t like slur and then tongue fast I tend to double tongue it rather then playing a single tongue 👀😭I’m frustrating rn 👀

Is tonguing necessary for beginner flutists? Like, Do I need to tongue the notes in "Happy Birthday?"
i got into advanced band this school year and hadn't taken beginners band previous year, so i am behind all the students... but these tutorials are so freaking helpful T-T
Happy to help!
Need help how come when I do the toughing I always end up more tired or out of breath sooner?
Its helpfull for me......
I use the first tonguing technique. Is it okay? Or is it worse that others?
I am a student myself, but learning baroque flute with private lessons from an expert.
He is teaching me that more traditionally, the second technique is "correct". It is much harder to learn (hence why i watched this video). Her advice is identical to my baroque flute teacher's. Since the baroque flute was a predecessor to the modern flute, I would apply the same recommendations to modern flute.
Read chapter 6 in the book " the classic of baroque music instruction on playing the flute" by Johan Joachim Quantz, who was a baroque flute composer/player who explains the technique in great detail.
so i’m currently teaching myself the flute (already play oboe+cor) but i don’t understand how you hold the flute when you play a C with just the first finger? I put the middle and ring fingers of my right hand down in order to support it as that doesn’t change the pitch but I don’t want to put myself into bad habits if that’s not correct.
DO you need to tongue in every note that you make?
yes unless stated otherwise
grazie profffff
Very helpful. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!

DO you need to tongue in every note that you make?
i dont know
👍🏻
Wait, I don’t use my tongue. All I do is like a slur but more force on each note. Have I been playing my flute wrong after all those year😱
Same..
What lesson book of flute can you suggest? I've been using Rubank Elementary Method to keep myself practicing, but I've gotten used to it due to reading it cover to cover. I want to improve my sight reading but in moderation because I've just moved on to Elementary method, so I don't want to move to something that may be too difficult for me.
The Book I created can work very well for you. Its a PDF and Video course package of 15 lessons. Check out musogy.com
Thanks u r the best👍
aww thanks Perla! Thanks for being part of the community!
Thx 2 u because I'm learning how to play the flute and one day I'll become a master thanks very much 😊
Thank you
Welcome 😊
Omg i love ur name! (Random but ok) my name is hunter... i am a girl... i often get mistaken for a boy. But ur name is so pretty!
It's called the "attack" when you release the air stream
Is not single tongue only "tha tha tha " , ?
And double tonguing (tha ka, tha ka ,tha ka )
And triple is like (tha ka tha . tha ka tha) ??
it depends on how you're taught? :) take a look at the other videos in the series. But in general I would lose that H in all of those. Its more Ta Ta Ta and TK TK TK and TKT TKT.
I use the lawn "Sprinkler" analogy rather than a hose. Hose works, but sprinkler is really the best example.
