    If Corrections gets too long, just upload it at 2x speed and we can use the RUclips playback feature to slow it back down. Then you can upload a 40 minute Corrections and still be under 20 minutes!

      I think that people mistook Horace Horsecollar for a cow because he dated Clarabelle Cow in the earliest cartoons. Then Goofy/Dippy was introduced to replace him and people thought maybe it was the same character.
      Apparently, a satirical article about goofy being forced to hide his bovine heritage was written in 2012, and a surprising number of people took it seriously.
      So TLDR: Goofy is not a cow, but he looks similar to a character who looked sort of like a cow, and a satirical article insinuated the two were actually the same character for laughs.

    CORRECTION: Gloves won't make a difference with Hep A while doing CPR. Actually, a lot of the safety contact stuff related to First Aid spawned during the 80's. The average Joe is still spooked by medical misinformation from 40 years ago. It's a real problem in that people who know how to do CPR will refuse to do it out of fear of not having all the PPE. Sadly, that unfounded fear is why you now have First Aid training to include "chest compressions only" even though it's less effective.

      PPE became mandatory in the 80s when insurance companies instituted “universal precautions”. You had to treat every patient you came in contact with as if they had something communicable. I was a nurse at the time and in just a single day, our jobs changed dramatically. Not saying it’s a bad thing, just that that’s the reason.

    Correction: Grammatically speaking the up in stand up is considered part of a phrasal verb NOT an adverb. A phrasal verb is generally a verb plus a preposition. A single lexical unit is formed resulting, in often times, a new verb. While up does infact modify or describe part of the verb (in stand up) it doesn't function with all stative verbs. For example, like up, love up, have up, owe up. Consider that stand up is referring to a single action making it a verb. Finally, an adverb describes the verb and because this is a phrasal verb, not an adverb, one can thusly be added.
    Stand up quickly!
    Quickly is the adverb describing how one stands up.
    Hopefully this helps.

      Doesn't it just depend on the theory of grammar you subscribe to? I would say that in phrases like 'stand up', 'sit up', 'get up', 'look up' etc. up functions as an adverb because it modifies the verb in predictable ways. Whereas phrases like 'own up' and 'throw up' are definitely phrasal verbs because the meaning is greater than the sum of parts. Also there are plenty of adverbs which do not apply to all verbs.. how about have quickly and owe quickly?

  • @puellanivis
    @puellanivis 2 года назад +51

    So, the whole “don’t end a sentence with a preposition” ignores that a common and entirely normal feature of Indo-European languages (maybe only the European ones?) is that verbs are commonly paired with a preposition in order to change their meaning. e.g. ”to throw out” is different from “to throw up”. This can be much better seen in German, where “anfahren” is different from “umfahren” which is different from “umfahren”. OK, so, that last one isn’t too clear until you make it a sentence: „ich habe den Hund umfahren“, and „ich habe den Hund umgefahren.” Also Latin, “exspīrō” is different from “inspīrō”, leading to English “expire” and “inspire”, respectively.
    So in the case of “stand up” while in English, the “up” is typically called an adverb in this position, it’s because “adverb” is often used as a catch all term for anything that doesn’t fit the other categories nicely, but it’s better to say that “stand up” is the the verbal phrase, because the “up” is a necessary component to understand the correct semantics of the verb.
    The “who found a curb to stomp you on” is also a demonstration of a verbal phrase where “stomp on” is different from just plain “stomp”, the “to” in this case makes it clear that we are building a verbal phrase in the infinitive, compare “who found a flower to smell”. So the “to stomp you on” is the complete verbal adjunct, so we can really boil looking at this down to only that phrase. “to stomp on you” would clearly means that the curb is being “stomped on” into you, while “to stomp you on” clearly means that you are the object that will be “stomped on” into the curb.
    As with so much of linguistics, descriptivists have come to find out that prescriptivist “grammarian” rules for English have no basis in actual language study, but instead were contrived rules to create an artificial language as a barrier into “writing properly”. Think Arya in Game of Thrones where she says, “my Lord” instead of “m’Lord“, and this immediately gives her away as not a commoner. By enforcing these grammarian rules, the elites were able to recognize a text that was _not_ written by an elite, and thus dismiss it without consideration with the notes “this person does not known how to compose a proper English sentence.” You know… like us Jackals do.

      Adjectives modify nouns, adverbs modify verbs. You don't just randomly call a part of speech an adverb because you don't know what it does. In the case of 'stand up', up modifies the verb by answering the question, 'stand how?'. However, it's a very polyvalent word, functioning as an adjective or a preposition as well.

The fact that all three theatrical cuts for the movies (for the most part) had everything they needed to tell the story, made the extended editions feel like less of a cash grab, adding to the world and characters instead of "fixing" the movie (looking your way, DCEU).

    Not a correction, just a PSA: Please don't do this thing with the microwave where it's running with the door open!! There's a reason they're normally built so that they _won't_ run with the door open because exposed microwave radiation can be very dangerous in general, not just when exposing your testicles to it... The door completes a faraday cage with the rest of the box so that with the door closed, the radiation is shielded.

    Correction: the lifeguards dont need to put on the gloves for CPR. Most of what they deal with is first-aid, like cuts and scrapes. That is what the gloves are for.

      People running around the pool, standing water creates surface tension on cement surfaces filling the pores and make it slick. Falls, slides, and impacts are why life guards yelling "No running"

    1. I often forget what's in the original LotR movies because I've watched them most often as extended editions. I accidentally watched a non-extended one once and was like, "Wait, where's the rest of the movie?"
    2. I am SO ready to watch Seth Meyers and Stephen Colbert throw down over LotR. Like, not a want, a NEED.

    Just wanted to acknowledge that I recently found out Chance the Rapper now has his own Ben & Jerry’s flavor and this leaves me even more disappointed in Seth’s inability to secure a similar honor. I ask myself, why do I even watch if not to partake in a television themed dairy dessert whilst watching said show?

    Even though I love Strunk and White, I also love Eminem be White’s verse-and even though I love LOTR, I always laugh when Seth drags it. Though I do wonder if his recommendation of Severance can be trusted with taste like that

    "Rudy Giuliani's first wife was his second cousin" - my brain is melting trying to understand how "was" grammatically applies in that sentence. This is jackal kryptonite.

    • @davidbright6790
      @davidbright6790 2 года назад +2

      No it isn't.
      She was his first wife, but then he remarried. Making the first wife/cousin past tense.

    • @Tao_Tology
      @Tao_Tology 2 года назад +2

      You could use 'was' or 'is' in this case: she was his second cousin in the past, she (still) is his second cousin now.

    • @SimonBuchanNz
      @SimonBuchanNz 2 года назад +1

      Ah, but she *was* his wife, but *is* his second cousin. Grammatically, which is applicable?
      On further thought I think it is *is*, as the *first* wife already implies that he's no longer married, and would have to be "ex-wife" if he didn't remarry.
      Perhaps "Rudy Giuliani's wife was his second cousin", without the "first" would be acceptable, as it's referring to the transitive property of "wife", not any specific individual.

    • @misterdoctor9693
      @misterdoctor9693 2 года назад +3

      They aren't mutually exclusive. She both WAS his second cousin and also now IS his second cousin, so I think "was" was fine and is fine. I WAS drunk when I watched corrections and AM drunk while commenting.

      @@SimonBuchanNz You're asking about two different things there:
      whether she is (still) his wife
      whether she is (still) his 2nd cousin

    The Emperor’s goal was universal domination. A lot of the expanded universe content talked about Palpatine’s push to rule well beyond the Star Wars galaxy. You’re good, my dude.
