As an alternative to hot gluing the lid onto the machine, perhaps one could glue little hinges onto the back edge of the lid and onto back of the machine, so the machine can be opened and re-opened and the ice cream refilled(?)

Unscrewing / screwing the cap to refill the container is not going to be easy since you glued the top of the unit closed. Also, you would have to use the product fairly quickly to avoid it melting. The insulation probably won't be enough to make the product stay semi-solid. You could use some thermoelectric cooler pads, in the insulator, to possibly make the product last longer.
