The Auctioneer is extremely slow-moving, but the awful circumstances that this couple and the whole town are in are so dreadful. It's not the typical horror novel, because it isn't scary, just depressing. However, I thought the end made up for some of the boring aspects of the rest of the book. I wouldn't recommend it for the typical horror fan, but maybe for the literary horror fan.
I can see it, but the circumstances didn’t feel real enough to be seen as scary or awful. It came off super cheesy and ridiculous in my opinion! Yeah I don’t even know if I’d recommend it for lit horror people tbh, I think people who love vintage/old school horror would love it though!
I didn't know anything about The Auctioneer going into it, but I actually liked the pacing of the book and I felt actual dread from what was happening. I wish I didn't believe that people could get in those situations, but it reminded me of an experiment done in the 1960s (I had to look it up but it was an obedience experiment done by Stanley Milgram). I will say the ending kind of fizzled out for me and I was pretty frustrated by some of the characters' actions. I thought it had potential, though.
Sounds like you should have DNFed The Auctioneer. I own The House Next Door so I am glad to know it's not too bad. I heard good things about Ring and I love the movie so I went and bought all three books and ever since I have heard nothing but bad things about it! 😂 I plan on reading Boys in the Valley in January. I also prefer happy endings! Even in horror.
Hahaha I don’t dnf books for vlogs unfortunately (unless it’s my Patreon vlogs). It makes things a little too chaotic for me. Ring was soooo disappointing, I’m glad I never bought the other books now. 😂
oh nice! I just did a book swap with one of my sister's, I face her Home Before Dark and she gave me The House Next Door. I love Haunted House stories, so hopefully it's spooky!
@@ErinMegan oh yes I left comment earlier before I finished the video.. still sounds fun though and will probably like it better with the right expectations set, thanks! ☺
I recently bought the Auctioneer, so happy to see it on the list! (oh no...just got to the part where you finished it 😂) The scariest part of the Ring for me was the way women were treated. I read this before watching the movie, and the movie is much, much better. Fracassi is becoming one of my favorite authors.
Hahaha oh no! I hope you love it! I know a lot of people really love the book, so maybe I’m just the outlier. 😅 No you’re so right!! The sexism and misogyny in Ring was the scariest part. 😭 I need to read more Fracassi asap!
I'm so glad someone else hated The Auctioneer. Agree with your every point. And it isn't horror, it's a crime novel, a low end mobster. Loved The House Next Door.
The House Next Door was written in the late 70s and definitely fits more in the suspense genre than horror. I can see how King was inspired by The Auctioneer and took it to the next level. I'm like you, I've read too much horror so all those lists never actually scare me.
Hi Erin, it’s me again. In a previous video I heard you speaking briefly , I think, Spanish. Your pronunciation was beautiful and sounded perfect to me (who can’t speak a word of Spanish) I love learning about people and please could I ask if you speak fluent Spanish and do you have family members who are Spanish. I always seem to cause upset when I ask polite questions ( I asked a lady if she was Arabic or Asian and she blocked me immediately ) but I never mean too and please accept my apology if this causes any offence. x
Aw you’re so kind, thank you so much! I actually don’t speak Spanish fluently, but I can get by if I have to. I’m Mexican and Spanish on my dad’s side, so his whole family speaks it fluently!
The author of that Esquire article has an amazing podcast called Talking Scared. I highly recommend giving it a listen!
Oh interesting!!
I'm with you on Needful Things! Read it years ago and loved it...lost it and just bought another copy this past month. It's soo underrated!
It’s definitely one of King’s best in my opinion!!
@@ErinMegan Agreed!
SURVIVOR BY JF GONZALEZ !!!
I knowwww I almost read it!! I’ll have to do another video including it!

@@katherineeaster5799 yeah Milgram’s shock experiment is very interesting! I can definitely believe the obedience part for sure.
I love Fracassi. His other one from earlier this year was excellent as well (Gothic). He is dark, bleak, gritty... Just the way I like it lol.
Oooh! I need to look into his other book then!!
agreed! I haven't come across anyone else that read gothic, so yay!
@@Kritz_Reads so good 😭

Great vlog 📚🎃☕👻☠️🧛🧹🍂🍁
👍👍
I think one of the scariest books was The Dating App Confessions by Logan Tindell because it showed how many weird people are on those apps hahaha.
Hahahaha no that actually sounds so scary 😭😂
Have you read Stolen Tongues ?
That is creepy and thought about it at night while reading it.
I have!! It was a good one!!

Loved The House Next Door.
Right? I couldn’t believe it was so bland and boring. 😭

Must have been republished cause my version was from the 90s and not the 70s hahaha. Yeah King did the plot wayyyyy better for sure!
