Elden Ring is not an on going game, it was one DLC. And there is no DLC category because 90% of DLC is terrible. From Software are one of the few developers that consistently makes good DLC, so they would win it most years anyway.

One of the worst takes ive heard in a long time smh. Down loadable content is extra content for said game Elden Ring which requires me to play to a certain point to access that content. God of War Ragnarok is a completely separate game I can play without playing GOW 2018. No one is arguing you shouldn't play the first one to understand the SEQUAL to a game but we are not talking about story. DLC is not a NEW GAME and it needs to be in a separate category along with other DLC's like Phantom Liberty! It's that simple.

Wukong is the first game where i've ever wanted to play New Game + straight after finishing it. Was it perfect, no, but what I played was fun and the story was engaging. I have over 100 hours in belatro but it wouldn't even cross my mind to consider it for game of the year.

Plain and simple dlc is should not be in the game of the year. It's a continuation of a game. not brand new game. barely with new mechanics. Game of the year should be a game that you haven't played any of. DLC you already know what the game is going to be like more than likely. The fact that Gary said Tears of the Kingdom should not have been game of the year, because its more breath of the wild. Extremely ridiculous. NO sir it's not, you have new mechanics in the the entire game. New story, new levels. Its a new game. You don't gave to play the first one. Just because I decide not to play and skip one of the gow games and play the new one, does not mean, it shortens the chances of the new game to be game of the year. A stipulation should be, that it's a new game, that is not stated as DLC. It can be a sequel, with brand new story or continuing the story from the first stand alone game, but have different mechanics in hand. DLC should be it's own category. like Best down loadable content.
Absolutely no one will see this, but for clarity, looking at cached versions of The Game Awards site (through Wayback Machine) does show that there was previously no stated rule about DLC in years prior. That could be interpreted as either "DLC is not allowed because it is not a game" or "DLC is allowed but we've never clarified."
Black Myth: Wukong absolutely deserves to be nominated for GOTY. While it’s not my personal game of the year choice, I would say it’s definitely up there with the best the year had to offer. It’s a really good action game with gorgeous graphics, great progression and fun, challenging combat. It’s everything I’d want from an action game. The problem with Shadow of the Erdtree being nominated for GOTY is that it is not a “game” it’s an expansion to an already existing game. A game that has already had its time in the spotlight. Don’t get me wrong, SotE is fantastic. It’s probably the best gaming experience I’ve had this year personally.. but it’s not a standalone experience. You can’t play it without owning and playing ER. So, why are we comparing it to other standalone experiences? It doesn’t make sense. If the award was for “Best Gaming Experience of the Year” then ok, but it’s not. It’s Game of the Year. “Game” not DLC. If you want to include DLC’s & Expansions then change the wording of the bloody award! What next, are we gonna be nominating TV episodes for Film of the Year awards? It’s just stupid. Put DLC’s where they belong. In their own F’ing category.
there's no way you compared a full fledge sequel to literally Down Loadable Content from Eldem Ring, even if it's an amazing dlc, is not the same category.
It's hard to justify Erdtree at all. If Elden ring came out jan 1st and Erdtree came out November 21st of the same year, no one would pick it as a separate contender against ER. That's the point, this isn't even a Spider-man and Miles Morales situation a DLC expanded into something more since with Erdtree you need the base game and it is DLC. Cyberpunks DLC wouldn't be nominated either. It's just such a strange opinion to hold onto. It goes into its own catagory, give it its flowers there.
You don't need to buy GoW2018 to play Ragnarok. You can just buy and play it stand-alone as its own GAME. If Erdtree was a stand-alone purchase then sure nominate it. But in order to play it you need to buy Elden Ring and play a significant chuck just to start it. Yes you should recommend playing GoW2018 first to play Ragnarok but you dont NEED to. You NEED to play Elden Ring to play Erdtree. I rest my case.
Technically you dont need to play Elden Ring before you play Erdtree. If you payed someone 20 dollars (therefore making Erdtree a 60 dollar game) I am sure they would play Elden Ring for you and get you into the start of Erdtree. Hell, I will do it for 20 dollars.

I think you'd make the most people happy by making a Best DLC/Expansion and Best Remake/Remaster category along with Game of the Year. That way everything can get recognized. More and more good games come out every year. More and more expansions and remakes/remasters of higher quality are coming out every year. It's only gonna get tougher to include all the quality releases in a year into a single category. Not a perfect solution but neither is what we have now🤷🏾♂️

People are too damn serious about award shows in general. All art is subjectively appreciated or disliked by individuals based on their experience with it, and in my opinion all award shows are nothing more than the who’s who section of high school yearbooks. Just enjoy what you like and don’t worry about what other people think and enjoy your experience with a piece of art and the moments when you have a conversation with someone who appreciates something in a similar way.

Erdtree is a DLC that requires you to play 10+ of Elden Ring to actually get to the DLC. This is not the same as FF7 Rebirth or Ragnarok, which can be started without ever touching the previous game. Erdtree should've been in best ongoing or a best dlc/expansion category should be included going forward.

in late 2023 rebekka valentine (IGN employee) started an smearing campaign accusing gamescience of being s&xist through out of context quotes and wrongly translated messages. This extended even to game events where directors got asked about the smear campaign rather than the game which got quickly shut down further infurating said people. Later in 2024 before release someone high up in chinese media announced that black myth wukong devs had rejected sweet baby inc (notorious western consulting company) extorting off over 7 million dollar. Since then the wukong subreddit banned any mention off sweet baby. Players quickly put 1 and 1 together and assumed that the only reason access media would attack wukong is due to the rejection of said consulting agency. This reached an boiling point when several western access media labeled black myth wukong during their ''professional'' reviews as not diverse or inclusive, stating how the game had not enough diverse cast (mainly woman) yet they forgot to actually play the game because in chapter 4 the story of the spider queen and her daughters liberating themselfs from evil spirit is exactly that, diverse storytelling. This ultimately spawned the ''reject woke media, embrce monkey'' meme.

Ragnarok was the first god of war I ever played and I got very confused by some of the storylines so had to go back to 2018 about 10 hours in so I kinda get the argument
Black myth is fucking fantastic. So many different bosses and so many secrets to find. The true ending fights rival some of the more modern western titles like God of war. It's fantastic. I had such a great time playing it. As opposed to rebirth for me. Rebirth just didn't have the same effect on me. I still haven't finished it to this day. I will and I enjoy the game but black myth is far superior in my opinion. I haven't played stellar balde yet but I hear amazing things about it and a lot of ppl really prefer it to black myth in terms of pure action and story. But as of right now I really believe black myth as a first game for game science is a game of the year contender. Whether it deserves the prestige it has can be questioned by anyone. That's fine, but for me I can definitely agree with the consensus for game of the year from the golden joystick.

Wukong being the lowest rated game for GOTY [a Metacritic score at 81] is a bit misleading. Ghost of Tsushima was nominated for GOTY and sits at an 83. Dragon Age Inquisition won GOTY and sits at an 85. Many great games within this score range have been nominated got GOTY.
Plus Black Myth reviewers only got PC code and didnt want to give the game high scores because they were worried the PS5 version would run like garbage.
Not at all misleading, Naveed. Wukong is the lowest rated game for GotY for TGAs by Metascore ever. Those other games you mentioned were in notable lull years in the industry, so they were still some of the best games produced those years. There are over 100 games better than Wukong this year in one of the best years so far as released games.

Elden Ring is not an on going game, it was one DLC. And there is no DLC category because 90% of DLC is terrible. From Software are one of the few developers that consistently makes good DLC, so they would win it most years anyway.

One of the worst takes ive heard in a long time smh. Down loadable content is extra content for said game Elden Ring which requires me to play to a certain point to access that content. God of War Ragnarok is a completely separate game I can play without playing GOW 2018. DLC is not a NEW GAME and it needs to be in a separate category along with other DLC's like Phantom Liberty! It's that simple.

Wukong is the first game where i've ever wanted to play New Game + straight after finishing it. Was it perfect, no, but what I played was fun and the story was engaging. I have over 100 hours in belatro but it wouldn't even cross my mind to consider it for game of the year.

Absolutely no one will see this, but for clarity, looking at cached versions of The Game Awards site (through Wayback Machine) does show that there was previously no stated rule about DLC in years prior. That could be interpreted as either "DLC is not allowed because it is not a game" or "DLC is allowed but we've never clarified."
Black Myth: Wukong absolutely deserves to be nominated for GOTY. While it’s not my personal game of the year choice, I would say it’s definitely up there with the best the year had to offer. It’s a really good action game with gorgeous graphics, great progression and fun, challenging combat. It’s everything I’d want from an action game.
The problem with Shadow of the Erdtree being nominated for GOTY is that it is not a “game” it’s an expansion to an already existing game. A game that has already had its time in the spotlight. Don’t get me wrong, SotE is fantastic. It’s probably the best gaming experience I’ve had this year personally.. but it’s not a standalone experience. You can’t play it without owning and playing ER. So, why are we comparing it to other standalone experiences? It doesn’t make sense. If the award was for “Best Gaming Experience of the Year” then ok, but it’s not. It’s Game of the Year. “Game” not DLC. If you want to include DLC’s & Expansions then change the wording of the bloody award! What next, are we gonna be nominating TV episodes for Film of the Year awards? It’s just stupid. Put DLC’s where they belong. In their own F’ing category.

It's hard to justify Erdtree at all. If Elden ring came out jan 1st and Erdtree came out November 21st of the same year, no one would pick it as a separate contender against ER. That's the point, this isn't even a Spider-man and Miles Morales situation a DLC expanded into something more since with Erdtree you need the base game and it is DLC. Cyberpunks DLC wouldn't be nominated either.

You don't need to buy GoW2018 to play Ragnarok. You can just buy and play it stand-alone as its own GAME. If Erdtree was a stand-alone purchase then sure nominate it. You NEED to play Elden Ring to play Erdtree. I rest my case.
Technically you dont need to play Elden Ring before you play Erdtree. If you payed someone 20 dollars (therefore making Erdtree a 60 dollar game) I am sure they would play Elden Ring for you and get you into the start of Erdtree. Hell, I will do it for 20 dollars.

I saw the comments about Barrett's take being bad, then I saw it......big OOF. That is the biggest straw man argument. Every example they brought up fails on the main concept that I don't need to play the original games to play the sequels. Also the fact that they are sequels and not DLC's blows up their whole arguments and that they are trying to gaslight us into thinking we're wrong is pretty fucked.

Erdtree is a DLC that requires you to play 10+ of Elden Ring to actually get to the DLC. This is not the same as FF7 Rebirth or Ragnarok, which can be started without ever touching the previous game.
Erdtree should've been in best ongoing or a best dlc/expansion category should be included going forward.

This extended even to game events where directors got asked about the smear campaign rather than the game which got quickly shut down further infurating said people. Later in 2024 before release someone high up in chinese media announced that black myth wukong devs had rejected sweet baby inc (notorious western consulting company) extorting off over 7 million dollar. Since then the wukong subreddit banned any mention off sweet baby. This reached an boiling point when several western access media labeled black myth wukong during their ''professional'' reviews as not diverse or inclusive, stating how the game had not enough diverse cast (mainly woman) yet they forgot to actually play the game because in chapter 4 the story of the spider queen and her daughters liberating themselfs from evil spirit is exactly that, diverse storytelling. This ultimately spawned the ''reject woke media, embrce monkey'' meme.

Ragnarok was the first god of war I ever played and I got very confused by some of the storylines so had to go back to 2018 about 10 hours in so I kinda get the argument
Black myth is fucking fantastic. So many different bosses and so many secrets to find. The true ending fights rival some of the more modern western titles like God of war. It's fantastic. I had such a great time playing it. As opposed to rebirth for me. Rebirth just didn't have the same effect on me. I still haven't finished it to this day. I will and I enjoy the game but black myth is far superior in my opinion. I haven't played stellar balde yet but I hear amazing things about it and a lot of ppl really prefer it to black myth in terms of pure action and story. But as of right now I really believe black myth as a first game for game science is a game of the year contender. Whether it deserves the prestige it has can be questioned by anyone. That's fine, but for me I can definitely agree with the consensus for game of the year from the golden joystick.

Wukong being the lowest rated game for GOTY [a Metacritic score at 81] is a bit misleading. Ghost of Tsushima was nominated for GOTY and sits at an 83. Dragon Age Inquisition won GOTY and sits at an 85. Many great games within this score range have been nominated got GOTY.
Plus Black Myth reviewers only got PC code and didnt want to give the game high scores because they were worried the PS5 version would run like garbage.
Not at all misleading, Naveed. Wukong is the lowest rated game for GotY for TGAs by Metascore ever. Those other games you mentioned were in notable lull years in the industry, so they were still some of the best games produced those years. There are over 100 games better than Wukong this year in one of the best years so far as released games.
