Cracking looking valve radio in the background. My hobby is restoring such radios. Hope yours works ok. Thanks for all your videos, very, very interesting and informative.
I am a nurse.. why would I watch a video about blacksmithing? Ha! But your passion and enthusiasm is so engaging.. So.. I only found your channel today... I have been watching all your videos most of today.. lovely.. thank you 😊
Since I watched this video yesterday.. my RUclips feed is full of ‘so you want to be a blacksmith’ type videos 😂 Maybe it’s a sign? The universe is telling me to give up psych nursing and make gates and stuff.. ha! Though I have difficulty banging in a nail.. 😬 I still love your videos.. even if I don’t understand lots of the info.. please don’t do any dodgy erotic book reviews.. or I will have to explain my YT feed.. that would be awkward 😐
Would love to hear your “broad” book recommendations. What do you read as you sit by the fireplace you’ve made under the roof you hammered down? (I’m sure I’m not the only who knows absolutely nothing about homesteading and building but nevertheless finds your videos entertaining!). 🤠
These video are a huge help for me, as I am a young lad looking to leave the world of work and hopefully live off grid one day. The books are one of the stepping stones to help. Thanks
I’m obsessed with old homesteading books atm :D I’ll for sure get the hubby some of these as he would love to learn more about the art of a blacksmith . thank you for a very informative video :)
The first two books (and many others) are digitised and free to download as eBooks here: archive.org archive.org/details/farmblacksmithin00drew and archive.org/details/forgingmanualpr00jerngoog
I just purchased a copy of The Complete Blacksmith based on your recommendation, what an excellent book. It's informative and easy to follow, I can see why you rated it so highly. Thanks.
My Great grandfather was a Blacksmith, my Grandfather worked with him for a while on a few occasions but they could never get on. We have a couple of horse shoes that Great grandfather made and I'm sure that I still have a photo of him shoeing a horse with my Grandfather holding the reigns At school we were taught a little about smithing but I never kept it up which I now realise is a great pity. Thanks for posting the video Max.
"... 'bout books. Remember those?" 😂😂😂 a quarter of my (working) life I spent pronging seaside second hand bookshops in search of everything printed related to seamanship and navigation and sailboatbuilding and singlehanding .... that was before the youtube academy and online-research of course. So much easier today, and that because of people like You going outta their way to let others participate in their knowledge. Thank You!
I finally got round to watching it! You have some excellent books and it really goes to show that books still have a vital role to play in learning any craft!
My grandpa had a blacksmith book written sometime in the 1800s he let me read through one summer. When died I asked my Aunt if I could have it, but someone else had beat me to it.
I see you have Flora Britannica by Richard Mabey in your bookcase... Me too! It is a wonderful book. Have you got Richard Mabey book Food for Free that is another nice one & you can put it in your pocket when out for a walk.
Yeah!! Max's booklists, can't wait for Part 2, maybe you could throw in some fiction too. You could turn it into a series. Oh and I love the radio set in the back, those old models are so gorgeous. Does it still work?
Glad to see regular videos, hope your well mate. Any news on the zil engine swap?. Look forward to the next one. Sometimes you just cant beat a physical book compared to internet related research at times. Have you thought of self publishing your own book?. All the best, will
Interesting... I have pretty much the same selection of books; also interesting that I reverse your choice and put Peter Parkinson in first place - I guess it's just down to personal taste.
More Im going old I started to appreciate books over internet. In books, you know the one written them and its kind a clean knowledge compared to internet source, which is more like polluted with everything...
Same. Also a lot of RUclipsrs are not even showing the interesting part of diy projects. It's all nice and fancy with some music on the background, but when you try to do it - you will often fail, because in a youtube video you have only the start and the fast forwarded version of the process and of course the final result and it seems so easy, but it is not. Especially if you are doing something for the first time. This is when the books are great, because they will give you more knowledge. Sure, they require more time to read them, but the end result is totally worth it. Of course there are some youtubers like Max who are sharing everything in detail, which is great, but the tough part is find more like him.
Lindsay books also reproduce a cracking little book, Secrets of the Lead Acid cell that have referenced it in my book, here's the link to Camden steam : www.camdenmin.co.uk/products/secrets-of-lead-acid-batteries cheers, Andy
It's interesting, max, how the aestheticism - indeed, outright fictions - take over as the craft becomes mechanised. How quickly misinformation takes over. I wonder if the cantilever between ideas and practicality has transformed the approach, or it's utility? Strange there's no straightforward manual/bible for blacksmithing
Apparently Lorelei Sims is alive and kicking check this out: ruclips.net/video/y3C4lVwdRQs/видео.html She also wrote at least one other book... Her web site is here: www.blacksmithchic.com/
No bs here. I like books but don't have the patience to read them. Now if you wrote one I'd buy it. It's always good to read something by someone who knows what they are talking about and who is prepared to think outside the box when solving problems due to no cash.
Are the books 'The Complete Blacksmith' and 'The Backyard Blacksmith' the same book? I can only find 'The Backyard Blacksmith' on Indigo, and also her own website only lists it and not 'The Complete Blacksmith'.
You're dismissive of Donald Streeter's book, Professional Smithing, and you omit two other great books, namely, Country Blacksmithing by Charles McRaven Edge of the Anvil by Jack Andrews Percy Blandsford was a cottage industry of one, churning out mediocre at best, books… Thumbs down!

This is a fantastic video and brilliant guide of what to look for thank you so much!

Fantastic video.. can't wait to see the full metalwork vid 👍
I'm not interested in getting into blacksmithing but I really enjoyed this video because you're very good at explaining what you like and dislike.
I finally got round to watching it!
You have some excellent books and it really goes to show that books still have a vital role to play in learning any craft!
As always, a superb video. Thanks you!
Thanks for posting informative as always 👍👍
Really like where your going with this, good books....Invaluable!!

Fantastic video , looks like my library is going to grow by more books
Cracking vid Max ,this saves me buying a pile of books that aren't great cheers Will 🍻
Cheers for the recommendations Max
I love the complete blacksmithing book. I have that book and it's very informative
My grandpa had a blacksmith book written sometime in the 1800s he let me read through one summer. When died I asked my Aunt if I could have it, but someone else had beat me to it.
Top technical culture. Thanks.
Nice review thanks :)
For those interested there is a couple of short videos of Lorelei on RUclips and her website can be found here: www.blacksmithchic.com/index.html
Excellent similar vid on off grid energy systems???
Maximus: utter brilliant info thanks. Ever watched Out of town? there are real similarities, if still totally different. Cheers

Yep more or less it does, but as it uses rather a lot of power and only picks up local radio, I tend not to!
Glad to see regular videos, hope your well mate. Any news on the zil engine swap?. Look forward to the next one. Sometimes you just cant beat a physical book compared to internet related research at times. Have you thought of self publishing your own book?. All the best, will
Ever been to a good free party in Wales ?. My friend really appreciated that book recommendation on Marine Engines btw (Thanks again).
I used to have a subscription to linsday Publications the late great Dave gingerly
good video as always.
Interesting... I have pretty much the same selection of books; also interesting that I reverse your choice and put Peter Parkinson in first place - I guess it's just down to personal taste.
Thanks for another great video, are you going to make one about your favourite fiction books?
More Im going old I started to appreciate books over internet. In books, you know the one written them and its kind a clean knowledge compared to internet source, which is more like polluted with everything...

👍👍👍👍👍🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧...
What is the role and relationship of blacksmithing compared to welding and metalwork?
I'd say blacksmithing is the part of metalworking that involves actually moving the metal around rather than cutting or sticking it together.
Some of the books you mention can be downloaded for free from archive.org/search.php?query=blacksmithing%20AND%20mediatype%3Atexts
And if the book turns out to be utter rubbish, just use it for firelighter material... :D
No bs here. I like books but don't have the patience to read them. Now if you wrote one I'd buy it. It's always good to read something by someone who knows what they are talking about and who is prepared to think outside the box when solving problems due to no cash.
You've got floorboards on your wall.
Dr Chunky Biscuit max has built an anti gravity machine, thats his floor, hes sitting on the wall lolol
Books are good.
Krzysztof Kacprzak ....you can have too much of a good thing. My husband has about 6,500! I think they could burn well in the stove!
Are the books 'The Complete Blacksmith' and 'The Backyard Blacksmith' the same book? I can only find 'The Backyard Blacksmith' on Indigo, and also her own website only lists it and not 'The Complete Blacksmith'.
Yes, don't know why the name changed but it's the same book!
@@maximusironthumper Perfect, thanks Maximus!
I undersud your hint, you have not self-teacher for Russian language book ))) where to send?
