Hey there. Reason why I chose to poke/high poke combo when it's downed is to make sure my hit will precisely hit it's Head's weakspot. (Alternative way to maximize combo damage) Using heavy slashes sometimes can be a hit or miss since the combo moves can lean your hunter backwards (That includes the monster's body flailing your hunter away as well.) as you can see during the early knockdowns. It all depends on where your hunter is facing/position towards at which is really important whenever you wanna execute your combo moves. As for the knockdown/topple/stagger threshold, it's all about meeting/timing the threshold criteria.
