For what it's worth, my college experience in the 1990s in Boson was almost identical to our Parisian friend here. I wish I had stumbled into The Other World, I never would have left lol
The mystery of what the student actually saw (or didn't see) is part of what makes this story so terrifying. H.P. Lovecraft thought this one of his best works because he did not over-explain what was seen through the window.
I liked the video, but the final scene really disappointed me.. In Lovecraft's story, the narrator is invited again by Zann in his room, where the old man continues to play the haunting music; he decides to write a note about the secret behind his music, but suddenly he stops and starts to play the viol as never before; at some point the window is opened and the room becomes dark, but the old man keeps playing as possessed; the narrator tries to wake him from the trance, but discovers that the old man had died, was ice cold, but kept on playing the viol with eyes wide open. You shouldn't have missed such an ending!
I've always assumed the city to be Paris, but the city is (as far as I know) never named in HPL's tale. I wonder if he mentions it in his correspondence, or if it is all meant to be some kind of nameless dream? I keep coming back to this video -- it's so awesome! The music and effects sound great on headphone.
@JamesWyndorf It reminds me of Thomas Mann's Doctor Faustus, although I think Lovecraft may have written this one first. Sorry, I admire Lovecraft and all, but he doesn't even hold a candle to Thomas Mann. Mann's descriptions of the music of hell are breathtaking.

A lovely piece of work. HPL would of been proud
