@@Mr.Yahoo_Zoom the median income per YEAR of a middle class family (in the states) is 65k. The average person works 40 years before retirement thats 2.6 million dollars not including investments retirement accounts etc. So no 50k is not more then the average person will see. Sure it might be more then the average person will ever SAVE during a 40 year career but that has more to do with poor financial habits then anything else. Her mom was getting thousands a month as an allowance from her affair yet let OP live like they were dead broke and even guilted her by talking about how hard she worked and how much she struggled. so where did that money go on top of her own salary? Especially if he was paying for dates or other gifts too. Even if she was getting 2k a month from him, and we estimate on the low end. Over the course of 8 years, that's 192 000 dollars. Had she put that money in a high yield savings or an investment account, it could have grown to even more. So sure you could argue that the mom didn't owe her that money since under the law her only obligation is to provide a roof over OP'S head and food. HOWEVER , had she been honest and told her the truth " I'm dating your bullies dad and while I have money its MY money and i dont need to spend it on you" that would have been shitty but still given OP the choice to see her mom for what she is and accept it or not. That's not what the mom did she lied, painted herself as this struggling single mom, and used OP's trauma and her dads death as weapons to keep her emotionally manipulated and dependent on her. She made her feel guilty for wanting to speak up. Thats the text book definition of emotional abuse and trauma. 50k doesn't even begin to repair the far-reaching damage that has and will still cause on OP's life.

Then OP had a panic attack after meeting the father and ended up in the hospital, so there's documentation of real distress caused by all of this. Perfect storm for the lawsuit. If it had all happened at home she would probably have lost.

I think about my own childhood and about all the bullying I received (mainly elementary and middle school - high school I grew a bit of a backbone) and how all the support I got was basically just “you should fight back” or “you should tell the teacher” and finally pawning me off on the school’s counselor (who was a very nice lady that had absolutely no power to do anything for me - yeay public schools in the 90s!).
When OP talked about crying herself to sleep and hiding out in random places in the school it really had me thinking about my own stuff and I empathize with her so much. My parents had more of an indifferent attitude than OP’s Mom - so it always felt like I had no support whatsoever and that i simply had to “take it” when I got bullied. (This caused me to have some pretty terrible coping mechanisms and attachment issues - but thats for another time).
But when it was shown that not only was the mother actively telling OP to “not cause trouble” and “learn to get along” or whatever - she was fully aware of the main bully because she was fucking his Dad?! How many years was she being actively bullied while she was screwing the Dad?!
My heart hurts for this woman.

When I was fourteen, my mom started dating a horrible woman. She would steal my clothes (we were the same size) and when I complained my mom said nothing at first. I had a period of observation in a business to do and my then step mom offered to help, I slept on the floor because she had not planned a mattress (even blowup would have been fine) and she had no couch because she lived in a small studio. After a year of dating, my mom gathered my siblings and I and asked if we liked her girlfriend and I think we all aired our grievances there. My sister also had a hard time with the woman but I don't remember what, my brother had silly reasons based on the feeling of "forever losing dad" which we were not, as it was also the time our dad came back around to see us more and reconnect. I was just very mad about my favourite turtle t-shirt and the "report" on the observation week that was not mandated by the school back then (it's now part of the curriculum now decades later) but that the step mom asked me to do without any kind of guidance. This was also just as the Internet was taking off, in the mid 2000s so I had no idea that I could find stuff there aside from my fanfiction websites, forums to speak about music and MSN for private messaging. My mom started to cry and said that she was afraid of all of this because she loved our then step mom and we all ended up hugging.
A month later, my mom announced us we wouldn't be seeing step mom again. It had lasted a whole year but we were all relieved. She explained that she realised her children should always come first and she actually spoke to her about the stolen clothes and found her wearing it when she went at her studio appartment on a weekend we were at our dad's place and the argument broke out : turns out that the step mom had been complaining about us all the time, how we always came first and never her, how she never prioritised her children over her relationships. When my mom had rightfully pointed out that the step mom's children were in their late teens and early twenties, adults having left the nest and that you cannot ask the same of children who were between 11 and 15 years old then, the step mom had started slandering us and the wool over my mom's eyes had come off.
That woman prioritising her relationship over her child's wellbeing is absolutely bonkers and make me realise that despite all her flaws and all the pain for a year of having this horrible hag around, my mom did the right thing in the end even if it only was apparently at the end that she had been listening to us a little more than the person she said then she was in love with.

If that isn't karma, I don't know what is. OP's mom chose her own love life over protecting her daughter from menacing bullies. The moral high ground, finger-wagging types are usually the biggest hypocrites. She was literally sleeping with the enemy. The audacity to call her own daughter immoral when she was the one who broke up a marriage is just dumbfounding. I guarantee you her mother, her mother's boyfriend and the boyfriend's horrible daughter will play the victim to anyone who will listen for the rest of their lives. Now all OP can do is live her best life possible. That is truly best kind of revenge.
Sadly, parents who put their own personal interests and selfish desires over the welfare of their children is quite common. I knew a lady much like OP's mother. Let's call her let's call her Sally. Sally was what we now refer to as a stereotypical common garden variety Karen. She never worked or maintained employment long enough for to make a dent in her finances, but she always had her hair done, her nails done, a full pack of cigarettes and booze in the fridge. She neglected her children to the point that criminal charges should have been pressed.
I distinctly remember when her youngest, her son, his teeth were rotting out of his head because she let him eat whatever he wanted and never made him brush his teeth. She would lament how she couldn't afford to get him proper dental care but suspiciously always had money to blow at the beauty parlor. Her daughter who was older by seven years (different fathers), had just started getting her "monthly visitor” and had to embarrassingly go bum feminine hygiene products off of the neighbor's wife. Again, Sally's excuse was she couldn't afford to get her daughter what she needed to deal with the new factor in her life. Yet Sally always had a full carton of cigarettes and a bottle of booze in the fridge.
To make an already long story much shorter, I cut contact with Sally a decade ago. Flash forward to the last few years where I heard through the grapevine, Sally's children have understandably put their mother on a low-information diet to the point of grey rocking her and have barred her from seeing her grandchildren. I also heard that, unsurprisingly, Sally plays the victim to anyone who will listen and wonders "what went wrong” with her life, how her “ungrateful” children could stop talking to her, etc. Sheesh! Talk about no introspection whatsoever. Sally has made her bed of nails and now she has to lie on it.
