@Beast the Grim executioner I feel like the sad chords in the mix make it feel like Magnamalo feels forced into the duel by the ongoing rampage, but cannot back away due to pride
A hunter and a monster refusing to back down. It genuinely made me cry when i heard it so first time i fight it im SOBBING with a smile as the duel continues to rage on.
6:47 Interesting to note, the Shakuhachi is now playing the same movement as the choir. Where before "Magnamalo" and "The Hunter" had a call and response, now the battle is so climactic and chaotic that they are both playing at the same time. And yet, since they play the same movement, there is still a dance there.
I think another cool interpretation of the vocals in this theme is that they are the souls of the dead, as magnamalo is said to be the manifestation of fallen warriors and a lot of his powers have spiritual visuals to them.
Yeah I've noticed that Magnamalo has a lot of similarities to an Onryou. A ghost so hellbent on vengeance it pretty much becomes a youkai. They're violent, untamed, and deeply feared. So the idea that the vocals represent the fallen is very fitting interpretation
part of magnamalo's design is based off of the association of samurai ghosts with these will o wisps known as hitodama. so it plays a LOT off of ghostly themes. And I feel like the abundance of sad, tense, and disturbing tones in his theme also play off of that.
The themes of the fated four from monster hunter generations are some I’d highly recommend for reactions, they do a huge part in characterizing their respective monsters and the fights that come with.
3:07 I’m ashamed. I’m a hunting horn main. I use the Sinister Shadestrum all the time. I love the sounds of the Biwa, Shamisen, and Erhu. And yet, it hasn’t clicked ONCE that the start of Magna’s theme is a Biwa, nor that his HH is ALSO a Biwa. I’m not fit to wield the Shadestrum anymore-
all the HH play a melody in Rise! Usually the monster's theme if the material source has it's own theme. Someone actually made a video about the melody sources linked to HH
This is a unique theme in the franchise, doesn't even sound like a monster theme, more like a theme you would stick to a humanoid character. Says a lot about Magnamalo's personality and characterization: he isn't presented as a normal monster but as an ancient enemy of Kamura's people
Nostalgic for the demo version already. This has to be the song that gets me hyped up the most from Rise. It’s epic without being overbearing and has its “patient” moments The shortness of a lot of the heavier chords (?) gives the impression it is a very adept monster or Finesse
I love how this theme fits both how brutal and mystical mangamalo is, he carries this “wizard of malice” feel with some of his hellfire attacks while also having very quick physical attacks that drive home the savage beast feel alongside it. I think the music accentuates that dichotomy all the better
Magnamalo's a monster that I was underwhelmed but until I actually fought it. When it first uses one of its explosions to FLY THROUGH THE AIR at you, and whole way the fight is punctuated by its music so well, it ended becoming one of my favorite monsters in the game. ...Even if the demo version made me rage uncontrollably,
I just my attention drawn to your work today, as I really enjoyed hearing about your work in the Third Fleet Podcast, and I must say I was not disappointed looking at your channel!
I know the feeling...I was waiting for Davi Vasc to be in the Third Fleet Podcast and it finally happened...Its my favorite Monster Hunter Crossover yet ❤ ❤ ❤
I've been looking forward to this, thank you! What I love about the theme is how it mixes with the fight, at first glance the song sounds fast and it's going everywhere, but put together and reserved. And it so happens Magnamalos fight, he's fast, he goes everywhere, but feels put together and reserved, almost like there's more going with the monster than we'll ever know. The fight itself (especially if you fight without the buddies) feels like two hunters going up against each other, like you both are at odds, trying to one up each other, like rival's. ( it's probably my favorite monster 😅)
Man, I love your music reviews and breakdowns of various themes. And I'm so glad you did Magnamalo's!! He is one of my favourite monsters, and has one of the coolest sounding themes. Keep up the great work Davi, I look forward to further content from you!!
Magnamalo is one of my favorite Monsters full stop. The vibe I get from his theme is like this "I'm a Hunter stalking my prey, but in the shadows hides my prey waiting to strike at me. The question is... who is hunting whom?"
7:10 I’ve always felt some kind of sadness and tragedy in this part. It’s like Magnamalo is tragic hero who’s trying to protect the ecosystem by hunting the rampaging monsters and even confronting elder dragons, yet he is viewed as an evil malicious beast in the eyes of the hunters and the villagers in Kamura.
I always love the build up in the beginning, with the rising tempo and when it builds up to the main melody. It has a sombre mood, with hints of aggression and strife. I really like what they did with his theme!
4:40 I'm not specially versed in music but when I hear this part, I can't help but imagine Magnamalo's outwardly erratic hellfire-acrobatics, disorienting until it very purposefully lunges at you. The 'circular' sound of the notes even kind of sound like its spinning to me? Magnamalo is one of the most if not the MOST agile monster in the series and during this part I can imagine the monster and the hunters skillfully dodging and weaving around each other trying to create an opening.
Music theory has always been fascinating to me, really wish I went to school for it. That aside, Magnamalo's theme goes so hard. Also, I love the idea that Magnamalo is based off of samurai, turning the fight into ninjas vs samurai
No idea why but I feel like that little part starting at 6:48 is just like a kind of “final dance” two hunters stuck in this battle, each with their skills honed and only one will be leaving alive
Amazing track, one of my favorites in rise and awesome analysis as always Davi But also, can we talk about that whiffed SAED at 7:40? my man was fighting ghosts.
I am a novice Transverse Flute player, I've studied it for 3 years and then stopped for ages, becoming totally rusty! I loved this theme so much I bought a cheap one to practice once again! Since I could not find sheets, I wrote it down myself, it's at 80% completion. Tho it sounds good, the Shakuhachi has this Warm, Soft Sound that his metal Cousin cannot replicate. Soooo I am also buying a cheap Shakuhachi ( About 80 bucks online) and trying to learn it as well!! I LOVE wood flutes, from Oboe to Clarinets, they sound mystical and welcoming!!
Absolutely one of my favourite Rise monster themes. It just fits the entire theme of the game with the instrument choice among other things. Speaking of my favourites, I would love to see you talk about White Fatalis' theme!
I love how you mentioned the call and response between the vocals and the flute. When you get hellfire blight, you actually hear a flute sound after a moment, such a nice touch to make that a major part of his theme
Also the fact that you sort of HARNESS it (the trick is to do the second wirebug so you drop it at Magnamalo's feet, yeah this one ENCOURAGES that you don't cower despite being set aflame)
Absolutely my favorite theme in Rise, I can totally relate to you getting lost in the music. It's so intense but also beautiful. There's something so haunting about the shakuhachi and it fits with his ghostly flames. I remember trying to beat the ultra hard Magnamalo demo fight while raving about how amazing the music is with my friends. Now on PC I decided to play the Hunting Horn and made the Magnamalo one last night, it rocks!
You're so awesome. As a music fan as well, I'm in love with most of the MH soundtracks, and it's so cool to watch your analysis of these tracks because you even explain the intention that the composer had when he/she composed the theme. I really think your videos are super interesting and it makes me wanna study music hahaha thanks
Thanks man. Just to clarify though, I don't claim to know the intention of the composers. All I'm saying in these videos is my own feelings and thoughts on the music I'm listening :)
I requested this song be analyzed and totally missed that it was made. Mags theme wasinstantly a winner for me. This forboding feeling alongside this intense music that makes my spine tingle and heart speed up. The mixture of chior and flute(Forgot the name of it) makes it feel like a duel of a the small hunter and large terrifying creature in the dark. The speed of the misic matches Mags own speed which is surprisingly fast for his size.
Can I suggest a counter point? When I listen to this track, I feel the shakuhachi represents the hunter and the chorus is Magnamalo. The flute feels so much more heroic and determined. It’s the voice of a lone samurai standing up to the darkness. The chorus on the other hand feels foreboding. Almost like it signals the impending danger of a vicious hunter. It kinda reminds me of the Borg theme from Star Trek TNG. Not a whole lot of vocals in the whole series until they show up. Hearing that haunting choir for the first time send chills up my spine. Both use human voices to achieve an inhuman presence.
Great breakdown as always. This theme has the most Rise vibe all out of the monster’s themes from Rise OST. The intro part is so cool! I really like how traditional Japanese instruments give this theme a sense of tension, the rushing feeling and the mystical vibe. Love this theme. Thank you for this amazing video, Davi!
Its absolutely one of the absolute best Flagship Themes. My personal Favorites in that Regard are Deserted Island, Magnamalo, Zinogre, Valstrax, and Mizutsune.
When you eventually get to the frontier spinoff games in the monster hunter series, i REALLY want to hear your reaction to the Polar Sea battle theme from Monster Hunter Frontier G. It's always been one of my favorite tracks .
From the strings’ ramp up around 4:44 through roughly the 8 minute point is my favorite portion of the song by far. I absolutely love it but it makes me mad when I’m fighting magnamalo because usually when it gets to that part he runs to another area and the music stops! Another great video Davi, looking forward to Shara Ishvalda’s breakdown whenever you get around to it. Have you reached it in Iceborne yet?
Yeah, I've beaten the main story in Iceborne. I'm definitely going ot do a video on it soon but I also have to start doing more videos on the music of classic MH games. People have been asking for that for a long time and I haven't really done it yet.
Great work like always, my firend. Ever since you tolld us about this "conversation" between hunter and the monster i noticed this kind of stuff in different themes and songs in video games. so glad i found your channel #youtubealgorithmdoingfineforonce
Amazing theme and awesome video! Thank you for your insight c: I would still love to see some breakdowns of lower star monsters like the greats sometime!
When I fight a magnamalo I always see him as a Ronin trying to test me. So ofc is a battle of honor! >:D MH team really continue to go above and beyond for us,and I'm thankful for that :)
I believe the instrument from the beginning is known as a Biwa. Like a very large more sitar sounding shamisen based on the plucking I hear. The Biwa music is used is some of the best Japanese video game soundtracks.
Was listening to you with on the fleet podcast and nobody mentioned the commodore 64 music , I understand it's before your time but the C64 Sid chip sound was truly magic, please listen to Martin Galway's ocean 1 loader , this guy was the first pioneer to inspire thousands of musicians and programmers . Still to this day it's really hard to beat...
My main interpretation of the whole song is that Magnamalo is a samurai, or something akin to a ronin, an warrior who was dishonored and is looking for a semblance of vengeance against those who wronged him. All in all, I love this song that befits the flagship monster for MH Rise
@@danielgeronimo5538 this comment was made before sun break, so I dunno if it doesn't count or if it does. But my original point still stands that magnamalo's theme gives major ronin vibes to me
Davi! Hello from Korea! I've been watched your videos of soulsborne ost and MHW bosses theme. It was great shock for the beginner like me that you analyzed. Do you mind getting recommend about 'Your Contract Has Expired - A hat in time'?
Great work as always Davi! In the last episode of the Third Fleet Podcast you said you mentioned something about strategy games like Advance Wars, and Fire Emblem instantly came into my mind. Have you ever played one of them? They tend to have some really interesting themes, especially for the final battles, some of my favorites being "Id: Purpose" from FE Awakening, "Twilight of the Gods" from FE Echoes and "The Apex of the World" and "God Shattering Star" from FE Three Houses.
I have a love/hate relationship with FE games (mostly love), but it's all love for the music. Yoshito Sekigawa, composer for the Gamecube/GBA era of the series is one of my favorites.
you should totally make an april fools joke about Khezu´s "theme" when the time comes, just 5-10 mins of pure silence... also really love your vids especially on the monster hunter stuff, always learning something new from these!
Loved this video but I saw something in the comments of another video and I have to say it before I forget... PLEASE cover the Final Fantasy Tactics OST. It is one of my favorites!
I'm not sure about the popularity of Biwa, which inherits the style of Pipa from the Tang Dynasty in China, in Japan, but the instrument remained ever evolving and is still being learned and played by plenty of people in China.
Damn I beat him yesterday on PC, btw PC was my first playthrouggh as I don't have switch. Woke up and saw your breakdown lmao his music defines the tempo of the fight, he is fast he leaves very less opening(well first fight I could only find few, I will git gud :p) the fight was like back and forth between us, he hit I dodge, he fight backs, I heal, the difficulty spike between him and 4 star mons were pretty noticable, it was like true test of will and skills, we have to use everything we have in reserve to beat this beast.
Even if i'm not a big fan of the japanese style of the game (a little too much for my taste), I really like this one. Probably one of my fav in the whole series
Magnamalo is so hype! Ever since they revealed him in-game I thought he was cool and his theme really slaps. I would love to see this monster in a Monster Hunter World 2 or something in the future
Since you did Magna, could you possibly do his rival-like elder Inagami? He also has a very unique Japanese aesthetic and happens to have a theme that utilizes an instrument completely made of bamboo
Have fun with MH Rise on PC everybody!

Glavenus andd Zinogre, I know you'll lovve it! :D
This really sets the tone.
This isn't a hunt.
This is a _duel._
I like that actually. It describes it in a way I hadn't thought of. Especially the flute strains at the beginning.
@Beast the Grim executioner I feel like the sad chords in the mix make it feel like Magnamalo feels forced into the duel by the ongoing rampage, but cannot back away due to pride

@@danielgeronimo5538 this comment was made before sun break, so I dunno if it doesn't count or if it does. But my original point still stands that magnamalo's theme gives major ronin vibes to me
0:42 I can't believe you didn't talk about that part, it's so cool so sinister.
Nice reaction and explanations about this track! Love your videos! Keep up the good work!
Thanks man
Oi Davi. I always enjoy your analyses and this one doesn’t disappoint. Thanks for the video :)
Thank you for watching, Anne :)
Nergigante+teostra+zinoger+brachydios+nargacuga+valstrax+samurai armor= magnamalo
6:47 I'm shaking.... that part is amazing.
The CB that kept missing the AED at the beginning triggered me.
Great video as usual 👌🏼
"The strings in the left speaker are going crazy."
As it turns out, my headphones were on the wrong way round. Thanks Davi!
lol glad I could help
my personal favorite is the Zinogre theme.....good i love that theme so much
congratulations for the growing views and subscribers!
Thanks man :D Congratulations to you too, you're a part of it
So excited for malzenos theme
Same
07:21 me when i fight him for the 38 time during the hunt
My cat hears this in her head every time she has the zoomies.
Davi! Hello from Korea!
I've been watched your videos of soulsborne ost and MHW bosses theme.
It was great shock for the beginner like me that you analyzed.
Do you mind getting recommend about 'Your Contract Has Expired - A hat in time'?
Oh, I love A Hat in Time. Thank you for recommending it!
Yoshito Sekigawa, composer for the Gamecube/GBA era of the series is one of my favorites.
cool thing is when you use the magnamalo HH if you play a melodic notes it sounds like the magnamalo theme
Yeah, a lot of hunting horns do that, it's so cool
you should totally make an april fools joke about Khezu´s "theme" when the time comes, just 5-10 mins of pure silence... also really love your vids especially on the monster hunter stuff, always learning something new from these!
This channel is criminally underrated
Thanks man. We're growing fast though
Loved this video but I saw something in the comments of another video and I have to say it before I forget... PLEASE cover the Final Fantasy Tactics OST. It is one of my favorites!
This theme is strangely beautiful... I gotta say MH composers don't mess around with flagship monster themes.
Great video as always
Thank you, my friend
I'm not sure about the popularity of Biwa, which inherits the style of Pipa from the Tang Dynasty in China, in Japan, but the instrument remained ever evolving and is still being learned and played by plenty of people in China.
The Rajang theme is a pretty good one too, sounds like a perfect representation of mythical and savagery.
Easily the best flagship theme....its so hype and melodic
Valstrax
Am i the only one who can still ear the hell fire sound when listening that theme x) ? Like it's hunting me even after his death
7:38 CAT !
When you spoke about the piano, and Magnamalo waiting for the opportune moment to strike, my first thought was the "Jaws" theme.
The notes are similar indeed!
Hey Davi, been enjoying all your contents here, could you make a video to rank all mh quest clear theme?
I'd love to see a video on nergigante, the arch tempered theme slaps.
Yeah, I love love to see Magna again in a future instalment too
One of the best themes indeed!!
Since you did Magna, could you possibly do his rival-like elder Inagami? He also has a very unique Japanese aesthetic and happens to have a theme that utilizes an instrument completely made of bamboo
Not just Inagami, he should do more of the Frontier themes. Those games had some of the best music in the franchise
I'll get into Frontier music soon!
Hell yeah dude, love your vids. I don’t know jack about music theory, but love hearing some of my favorite tracks taken apart. It’s interesting
One of the best sounds in MH
Yo I made it early again! (Been busy lately glad I could make it) Magnamalo is sick!
Yo thanks for showing up early!
Nice analysis Davi
Would like yo hear your thoughts on Mizutsune theme on Rise
