  • A thorough discussion of the Presto, BWV 1001 in G Minor, the video describes how the piece refers to and alludes to the other movements in the first sonata, and therefore ties the work together. An interesting historical discussion is included as well.
Similar to the Adagio, the piece has two sections that clearly mirror each other. And, like the Siciliana, the Presto arrives back to the home key well before the end. However, while the Siciliana harks forward to the Style Galant, the Presto with its unpretentious lines that repeat sequentially--but more persistently than is normally expected, gives the sense of a more archaic style that the other pieces in the Sonatas and Partitas.
The video also gives suggestions to guitarists regarding fingering choices and also how to use the hand so that the fingerings in the Koonce/DeRome edition of the Sonatas and Partitas feel easy to execute.

I loved this video ,i have just started learning the BWV1001, having just got the fugue off to memory i then started learning the presto, and i came uppon this brilliant discription of this piece and how it is composed ,thank you for sharing this video i thougherly enjoyed it and has given me more insight when playing the presto

Very nice. I'm missing a comment on the rhythmic side of the piece. Although written as 3/8, I find that almost all versions, on violin or guitar, play large parts as 6/16, often because they want to honour the presto by playing as fast as possible, and many parts fall easily under the fingers as 6/16.

I discuss the presto term in another video. I did not necessarily mean "play as fast as possible". These terms all had emotional meanings. Allegro meant joyful and happy, for example. Presto has a harried, hurried feel. I agree that the measures should not be felt as six 16th notes. They should be felt as one beat, and they should alternate between a strong beat and a weak beat, since Bach has the measures alternating between measures with full and half barlines. Thanks for your comment. I think I will try to put together a video about this topic.

@@sonatasandpartitas Very true, your remark about "full and half barlines". I am re-studying the piece, and I had completely forgotten that, thanks for reminding me! It is worth noting that the harmonic sequences of descending fifths both begin on a weak measure (measures 12 and 70). Also, while we're on the subject of rhythm, I'd be interested to hear your opinion on possible hemiolas. There is one particularly blatant at measure 33-34. Any other candidates ?

It can't be "wrong" if it works for you. I think a lot of violinists also play it lower down the neck.

@@mattbacon285 I can try to explain... First I crop it to the amount of score I want to show, and save that as .png I am not sure if jpeg will work. Then drag the file onto i movie above the main video. highlight it and and go to (above the picture of the video) cutaway>picture in picture. then double click on the clip, and you can grab a corner and drag to get it the size you want.
