hi, i live in London, is dangerous , just like 3 world big city..
Bugger, commented before I saw this. But you're not the first to place it in Merseyside on RUclips when talking about crime.
Thanks for pointing out these “old -school, gentlemen gangsters” were really psychopaths too.
But they were ours - I’d prefer not to have to take on the whole world’s detritus too

Gangsters still have slam poetry contests, but they call it drill rap nowadays.
🤣
😂😂
They are not gangsters XD
Young men writing poems to each other about piercing each other.....seems kind of gay....
Gangsters dont go into song for millions of people to hear about the crimes they commit 😂 those are just musicians that put on an act for their audience
I love how British interviews are so often at a pub with a pint or glass of wine. From archeology to gangsters to war documentaries. It's so real.
It's good to see that Cleveland in the US and Cleveland in the UK has something in common
That they both aren't in Merseyside?
Crazy white gang members?
And Boston!
Well yeah, half of the town and city names in the US are taken from the original locations in the UK
Total shitholes?
"British police didnt do there jobs in the slums of britain" thats still true
Nowadays they don't do their jobs anywhere.
*their
The law and the police were formed to protect property and the people who owned it as they were the only ones who had the money to do it so that was the start of it and it’s still the same, the police don’t operate in slums or poor areas and are still not trusted because of it, little has changed in this respect and it’s unlikely to in the future.
What? You mean: "their jobs"? Otherwise it makes no sense
Be glad UK that all these folks don't have the ability to get their hands on unlimited firepower like they do in the US. It's crazy here.
Gangs have existed in Britain for over 200 years, gang culture is just more seen now because we're in a social media age.
Gangs are also seen more now because they involve citizens much more than they used to. Old school gangs didn’t run down the road hacking at locals with machetes. They didn’t drug and gang rape women and children by the thousands in towns across the country. They kept their sadism mostly to themselves. Look at acid attacks… They happen only in Asia and UK (I wonder why in the U.K.) Last year 1,244 attacks! Trying to pretend gang culture of today is the same as before is rewriting history!
No it's more of a problem now because the youth imitate this saharan low life lifestyle
It’s as if you watched the video.
this man is so switched on. he teaches me something new in every video, be it statistics, history or just a fresh point of view, and somehow manages to keep it incredibly entertaining. love it mate, keep it up please
Can't wait for the 2120 history essay question: "Compare and Contrast the 18th Century Highwayman with the 21st Century Roadman." The irony being that the former is more likely to be in possession of a firearm and the latter a sword.
I grew up in east London in the 90s,00s and there was gangs of every colour. In my postcode alone there was black gangs, white, Tamil, Pakistani, Sikhs but to this day the most brutal I’ve ever seen are the Albanian gangs. They were ruthless and savage. The rest were for the most part chill and seemed to only cause trouble fighting with other gangs but the Albanians seemed to target everyone. Maybe things have changed in the last 10 years or so though
I agree with you comment and I grew up in Manchester. Have you seen Gangs of London it’s currently on Netflix? The Albanian man in that show reflects your comment💯

Living in London with a Scottish accent was brilliant because the gangs from Camberwell and that whole area would never bother me because they thought I was a gypsy and apparently the rule is nobody does anything to gypsies because the gypsies are so unpredictable
It's true mate if you see a few white gypsy lads or even just one on the top deck of the bus and a whole gang gets on nobody is gonna dare bother them😂
To be fair, as a kid my old man taught me the rule to not fuck with the following;
Gypsies
Turks
Polskis/Eastern euros
Because all 3 were unpredictable and would roll on you in crazy numbers if you pissed them off, 200 cousins and brothers in a couple houses all with the hump with you, and so will roll on you in your gaff, cafe, or on the local high road and just serve you
So yeah I can see how and why you got left well alone if that was the idea of you lol
That’s cap😂😂😂 nobody scared of gypsies, gangs always put gypsies in their place, gypsies are scared of black ppl
They didn’t touch you because you became cool with them…. If you wasn’t cool they would’ve robbed and done something to you 😂😂😂 I’m from Camberwell and they ain’t no rule, gypsies aren’t anything 😂😂 being scared of a gypo is like being scared of a skateboarder, idk why you making stuff up because gypsies are a even more of a target than any other race because there are much worse ppl, although gypsies are looked to be softies/chavs stop lying to make your ppl seem tough😂😂😂 that’s the funniest thing I heard, gypsies are scared of blacks and Asian and don’t make up any crimes in the country, all the crimes are blacks Asian turks etc, gypsies don’t make up any type of crime 😂
They must be dumb to think a scott sounds like a gypsy
I love that fact about Man City. I always remind people of it when they tell me that City has no history lmao. I know that's not what they mean, but it's a pretty awesome fact that the team with 'no history' was created with the purpose of reducing youth gang culture

Bro, such a good one, as always
As always describing a very important thing, that generation after generation people in power do NOT care about the ones "below" and see people as an asset to grow their wealth.
My mum use to work for the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) prosecuting youth offenders. She worked really really hard to make sure these kids (who had sometimes done really awful things) were given every available bit of support and help.
When Kier Starmer started running the CPS he made it all about statistics. My mum use to be pulled into her managers office all the time because her prosecution statistics weren't "good enough". She argued that the numbers of children she prosecuted shouldn't be relevant, and she continued trying to get these kids support through things like the youth offending team or medical help. Eventually, Starmer's policies made it impossible for her to do her job in a way that she could feel good about and she retired early.
It's no accident that our prisons are over crowded and children are being funnelled into gang culture. Our Prime Minister had a massive part to play in that. It's so depressing.
In the 4 months he has been in powe 😏
nice LARP lol
The post code of the clip at 17:36 is CB2 3PA in the Cambridge city centre for everyone not asking. These lads were arrested shortly after
Great video. Really strong and unbiased views that helps to delve deeper into the problem of gang culture and crime.
Great job!
even county lines is not a new thing, like 20 years ago it was just called Cunch but obviously was not as well documented
It's just a BBC way of saying distribution
Even before that, there were small picturesque villages with serious class A problems. Snodland in Kent where my grandparents lived was more of a crossroads with a couple of shops and a pub, than a village, but there were a lot of people hooked on Class A's there. Same for a lot of little northern villages where I had mates who grew up.
County lines and all that just made sure there were no villages and towns that didn't have a drug problem, by overseeing distribution regionally and sending kids anywhere there was a gap in the market.
As a teenager in the 90s I was aware of 'county' lines gangs. As you say it just hadn't hit the mainstream media. I had a friend who got shot to death in a very well-to-do small village and it was due to a drug debt. The only difference is the police didn't seem to be aware of the problem then.
Still Cunch mate, depends where you are

This is quite interesting. Pulls on a lot of themes.
Growing up in Manchester in the 90s it felt like everyone knew of the Noonan family, and this was pre-internet. They were like local celebrities but in hindsight so weird that we were all just ignored that they were horrible, violent psychopaths.
Yeah man, gangs have always been a thing. I went to primary school on upper tulse hill, a bit down from Brixton high street, and there were kids in my class who had older siblings in the 28s.
Generally though, if you weren't interfering with their business you'd have no problems. Same with the other yardie offshoots, I knew a few yardies and I never had any problems with them. I used to buy my grade from a yardie taxi firm, and all sorts of people would stop by to buy. They'd let you skin up and smoke in the basement, and I've seen businessmen in pinstripe suits with a bowler hat perched on the table next to them while they zooted up. By and large I never had any problems with organised gangs when I lived in South London. Tbh back then I'd rather deal with someone in a gang than a lone wolf, because you know what you're getting with the yardies. They never let skin colour interfere with business. They didn't care I was a white boy skater, I was a customer, so I was treated with respect.
Not to say it didn't kick off in the basement from time to time, but it was never about colour or gangs, it was usually personality clashes or someone owing someone something. I used to buy off organised groups of Albanians, Moroccans, Afghanis and Turks too, and they were all the same. If you were a customer they were always sweetness and light lol. But I've seen them pull out the cleavers and go after someone too, so I always made an effort to be respectful to people too. It used to be almost all gang on gang crime, but I'm not sure that's true these days. It's anything for a profit or a rush, or some lyrics for your song, and I'm glad I moved out of London twenty years ago. I live in Bristol, and while I'm sure there are gangs, I've never had an issue with anyone, even living in what are generally regarded as dodgy areas here. They're just nowhere as dodgy as where I grew up, so I feel pretty safe on the streets here, no matter what part of Bristol I'm in.
I certainly wouldn't want to raise kids in london, that was why I moved. The chance of your kid getting sucked into that life, or just being a random victim even if they're not part of the scene, is just too high nowadays.
Well said mate your experiences are pretty similar to mine only in Birmingham I'm a married family man now so don't even really smoke that much anymore but I can't actually think of a single time I've ever found myself in a really sticky situation

People really don’t get what “culture” means anymore. Putting labels on everything. Society is a huge cattle of sheep, following mindlessly without questioning who are the shepherds, or how to become a better self.
I lived in Bethnal Green for 4 years .
I used to frequent public houses in the area, and the locals said that the Krays where bully’s and know body liked them.
know body 💀
Yeah after fascism ended in Italy everyone said the fascists were bullies and "nobody liked them". Sure as heck maybe people did not "like" them but only few stood up to them, meaning they respected and feared them.
With the benefit of hindsight and perhaps a lot of social pressure to say old gangsters/fascists were bad, people have learned what they're supposed to say. Or you just came across the "right" bunch and not those who would respect the Krays - which btw most of those who lived through that time are now dead or too old to walk to the pub.
@@Vincent_Clarke Your point?
@@LiimpZ point is that people will conform to what they think they should say
@@Vincent_Clarke But where is the connection between this guy living in Bethnal green and the end facism in Italy?
Imo the biggest change in gangs and gang culture is the switch from a few larger more organized groups to significantly more, less organized groups.
Back then, the average guy just wanted to be a “square” and take care of his family.
Nowadays there seem to be a lot of guys who, let’s be honest, wouldn’t have been accepted into the mob of mafia or what have you, but still want that title of gangster. So what do they do? Round up a couple knuckle headed friends and now suddenly there’s a new “gang” causing nonsense around the city.
Great topic as always

“Man see blue story, they’re mortified. Man see scarface and it’s glorified”
You'd think bro has stocks in Squarespace
Not really. Common sense would tell you he gets paid to advertise for them.
They probably sponsor him for the shoutout
21:47 “The troubles” was a lot more than simple gang culture, it’s extremely complex, for example you would probably get butchered for not calling any those Protestant ones British. To answer your question though, in the Republic of Ireland, our media makes it seems like the gangs out of the Dublin seem are the biggest criminals world wide and even when there isn’t things going on atm there is nearly always a documentary about them like the Dublin Narcos series that airs on Sky in the UK (we have similar shows air domestically for last 25 years)
Although it is just gang culture now, the uda, uvf and ira etc aren't what they used to be, I've seen reports of catholics from Cliftonville (North Belfast) selling drugs for the uda, its all drugs n money now
You hit the nail on the head my friend - “gangster” is a complete media narrative going back to James Cagney, through the Godfather, DeNiro, Scorsese, Gangster rap, Death row, all “urban” music, drill or whatever. It’s all just made up stories to glamourise and promote being a “gangster” so they’ve got a never ending supply of impressionable yout to sell thier drugs for them and keep poor people down. Imo.
It always makes me wonder why unionists are even unionist, like this English lad referred to their gangs as Irish which I’d imagine is how most actual Brits see them , as Irish
@@seamusmcfadden15 I think a lot of it is do with English people don’t understand how their own United Kingdom operates or it’s history. A lot of them don’t even realise we are no longer in the UK or commonwealth and it’s even more confusing NI is. I think because of this the unionist have a bigger chip on their shoulder about it all. It's reductive to say that crime is a consequence of bad economics. There are poor communities that have low crime rates. Not saying it's not a problem, but I think it's overstated sometimes.
causation has been established though, poverty is the main amplifier of crime
lol what? poverty/ resource deprivation is objectively the reason why crime is so pervasive. and if not then what is it? do you unironically think people are just born crimogenic?

Unfortunately, the social crime issues started at the beginning of the industrial revolution and deteriorated further when Margret Thatcher introduced the new type of capitalism being neoliberal economics and governance in the late 1970's where the wealthy became wealthier, the middle class started to struggle and the working class became poorer. Capitalism/neoliberal economics is about 'for profit at least cost'. With increasing global geopolitical, economic, trade, manufacturing with its associated supply chains and health uncertainties, advent of technology especially social media and AI and the effects of a warming planet, poverty and social crime will continue to grow, especially in those western countries who adopted 'for profit at least cost' neoliberal economics and governance in the early 1980's.
Absolutely. Wealth inequality is only increasing. Wealth inequality is the biggest scourge to mankind next to climate change.

I appreciate your factual contribution. Sadly, too many people don't read enough books on globalisation and international relations to help them understand how and why Britain's economic landscape has changed immeasurably. People really need to read more because ignorance is often a sizeable source of frustrations which only grow in strength and size when one does not learn substantiated facts.
@@chilechi1846 - I agree with you. What alot of people don't realise, that neoliberal economics aka capitalism leads to corporate and political short termism in regards to thinking and planning which leads to wealth inequality, social, education, etc issues.

I lived in England for a couple of years as an international student and can say I considered my cultural induction complete after I had a couple of encounters with some local British gangs in Canterbury. I've got to say, gangs in the UK are...unique? I was at McDonalds (before I learnt that's sort of where sketchy things happen in smallish cities) and a group of 5 kids locked me into the bathroom by throwing themselves against the door. I just stood still for 30 seconds before they realised I couldn't care less, but I was surprised to see all of them were at most 15 years old. Some of my classmates had an incident were another kid gang stole some things from them at our local (heavy drinking) park; of course my friends beat the sh*t out of them after one tried to punch a guy 20cm taller than him in the face, but from what I heard it was definitely a weird experience. Also, are the black trousers, hoodie and balaclava a standardised uniform or something? Like, does M&S sell it as a full outfit? Because why they all dress the same beats me.
Sounds like you encountered some run-of-the-mill schoolkids. You should see what mum is like!
If you're up to no good, it helps to cover your face and wear dark clothing as it makes you less recognisable on CCTV. What you encountered sounds more like badly behaved kids because actual gang members wouldn't have let your friends beat them up without pulling out a knife.
Sounds like the average chav, honestly you’re getting much worse from them if you’re white. Atleast they don’t discriminate, everyone’s having their night ruined when they around 😂
Im guessing that park is Dane John gardens haha canterbury is shit

My aunt's cousin's dog knew them dishonestly. @@Biggee1982
Pretty sure Ronnie and Reggie were both gay, although Reggie did marry a beard for a bit, and a woman has come forward claiming she's his secret lovechild. So he might have swung both ways.
My mum's budgie used to drive Reggie about and my nan's cat Tiddles went to school with the twins😂 😂
@@Si74l0rdof course there's money to be made by Reggie's love child writing a book about them.after all anyone who ever so much as spoke to the twins has written a book about them
I live in Middlesbrough and can confirm it is indeed a very scary and unsafe place at night.
The BBC turned up to my home village (A place called Hemlington) to make a Panorama special about the crimes there. That's how bad it is.
Spent a week in Middlesbrough for work once and saw some much shit, I felt like I was in a simulation. No disrespect but I would never go back personally.
As a local why do you think that is? has Middlesbrough as a whole experienced a certain type of cultural enrichment over the last 30 years i wonder i wonder
Middlesbrough is a strange place, one one hand you have a lovely beach a short way up the road, then slightly further you have mansions with crackheads on the next road over.
Informative thanks
What an amazing video start to finish
You can't look at London as a whole when comparing per 1000, Peckham alone as 172 per 1000 that is around the same population as Cleveland and there's loads of different places like that in London, it's all the really nice parts of London that brings the average down when comparing.
So this is why it's always London that is spoken about
London is split between 32 boroughs and each borough is the size of an average UK city
Fair point
That’s exactly right!
Peckham has 107 per thousand, 13th out of 23 Southwark wards. Borough has 500+ per thousand and Bermondsey, Rotherhithe and London Bridge all score higher than Peckham on the crimes per 1000 scale.
Some severe misunderstandings involving the paramilitaries in Northern Ireland
Firstly calling UVF/UDA/UFF "Irish gangsters" is absolute madness, considering their targeting criteria was purely based off of their victims being ethnically Irish - its like calling HAMAS a Jewish group, when their sole purpose is to try to destroy them.
They also weren't gangsters - very few terrorists in Northern Ireland were making money during the troubles. After the Good Friday Agreement they decayed into drug gangs, particularly on the Protestant side. But then to compare these people with the Kinihans is crazy.
Ideology motivated the paramilitaries in Northern Ireland, not money. So they are classified as terrorists not gangsters but their circumstances are so far removed from anything else in the UK that they dont have any comparisons whatsoever.
Great point, I was thinking the same. Completely different game. Though I think the point he was trying to make overall was on media focus on particular groups of people, other than that you're absolutely right.
Why you talking with no knowledge
Gangs can also be influenced by ideology. In America, the origins of crips and bloods is actually ideological then turned to incorporate money.
I heard down the line that they were also called the pikey blinders on the account a lot of them were gypsy travellers
Sharp! Great video Jimmy.
