    • @GeorgiaMartin-ll9qg
      @GeorgiaMartin-ll9qg 4 месяца назад

Gangs are also seen more now because they involve citizens much more than they used to. Old school gangs didn’t run down the road hacking at locals with machetes. They didn’t drug and gang rape women and children by the thousands in towns across the country. They kept their sadism mostly to themselves. Look at acid attacks… They happen only in Asia and UK (I wonder why in the U.K.) Last year 1,244 attacks! Trying to pretend gang culture of today is the same as before is rewriting history!

I grew up in east London in the 90s,00s and there was gangs of every colour. In my postcode alone there was black gangs, white, Tamil, Pakistani, Sikhs but to this day the most brutal I’ve ever seen are the Albanian gangs. They were ruthless and savage. My mum use to work for the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) prosecuting youth offenders. She worked really really hard to make sure these kids (who had sometimes done really awful things) were given every available bit of support and help.
When Kier Starmer started running the CPS he made it all about statistics. My mum use to be pulled into her managers office all the time because her prosecution statistics weren't "good enough". She argued that the numbers of children she prosecuted shouldn't be relevant, and she continued trying to get these kids support through things like the youth offending team or medical help. Eventually, Starmer's policies made it impossible for her to do her job in a way that she could feel good about and she retired early.
It's no accident that our prisons are over crowded and children are being funnelled into gang culture. Our Prime Minister had a massive part to play in that. It's so depressing.

Snodland in Kent where my grandparents lived was more of a crossroads with a couple of shops and a pub, than a village, but there were a lot of people hooked on Class A's there. Same for a lot of little northern villages where I had mates who grew up.
County lines and all that just made sure there were no villages and towns that didn't have a drug problem, by overseeing distribution regionally and sending kids anywhere there was a gap in the market.

Yeah man, gangs have always been a thing. I went to primary school on upper tulse hill, a bit down from Brixton high street, and there were kids in my class who had older siblings in the 28s.
Generally though, if you weren't interfering with their business you'd have no problems. Same with the other yardie offshoots, I knew a few yardies and I never had any problems with them. I used to buy my grade from a yardie taxi firm, and all sorts of people would stop by to buy. They'd let you skin up and smoke in the basement, and I've seen businessmen in pinstripe suits with a bowler hat perched on the table next to them while they zooted up. By and large I never had any problems with organised gangs when I lived in South London. Tbh back then I'd rather deal with someone in a gang than a lone wolf, because you know what you're getting with the yardies. They never let skin colour interfere with business. They didn't care I was a white boy skater, I was a customer, so I was treated with respect.
Not to say it didn't kick off in the basement from time to time, but it was never about colour or gangs, it was usually personality clashes or someone owing someone something. I used to buy off organised groups of Albanians, Moroccans, Afghanis and Turks too, and they were all the same. If you were a customer they were always sweetness and light lol. But I've seen them pull out the cleavers and go after someone too, so I always made an effort to be respectful to people too. It used to be almost all gang on gang crime, but I'm not sure that's true these days. It's anything for a profit or a rush, or some lyrics for your song, and I'm glad I moved out of London twenty years ago. I live in Bristol, and while I'm sure there are gangs, I've never had an issue with anyone, even living in what are generally regarded as dodgy areas here. They're just nowhere as dodgy as where I grew up, so I feel pretty safe on the streets here, no matter what part of Bristol I'm in.
I certainly wouldn't want to raise kids in london, that was why I moved. The chance of your kid getting sucked into that life, or just being a random victim even if they're not part of the scene, is just too high nowadays.

With the benefit of hindsight and perhaps a lot of social pressure to say old gangsters/fascists were bad, people have learned what they're supposed to say. Or you just came across the "right" bunch and not those who would respect the Krays - which btw most of those who lived through that time are now dead or too old to walk to the pub.

Back then, the average guy just wanted to be a “square” and take care of his family.
Nowadays there seem to be a lot of guys who, let’s be honest, wouldn’t have been accepted into the mob of mafia or what have you, but still want that title of gangster. So what do they do? Round up a couple knuckle headed friends and now suddenly there’s a new “gang” causing nonsense around the city.

Unfortunately, the social crime issues started at the beginning of the industrial revolution and deteriorated further when Margret Thatcher introduced the new type of capitalism being neoliberal economics and governance in the late 1970's where the wealthy became wealthier, the middle class started to struggle and the working class became poorer. Capitalism/neoliberal economics is about 'for profit at least cost'. With increasing global geopolitical, economic, trade, manufacturing with its associated supply chains and health uncertainties, advent of technology especially social media and AI and the effects of a warming planet, poverty and social crime will continue to grow, especially in those western countries who adopted 'for profit at least cost' neoliberal economics and governance in the early 1980's.

I lived in England for a couple of years as an international student and can say I considered my cultural induction complete after I had a couple of encounters with some local British gangs in Canterbury. I've got to say, gangs in the UK are...unique? I was at McDonalds (before I learnt that's sort of where sketchy things happen in smallish cities) and a group of 5 kids locked me into the bathroom by throwing themselves against the door. I just stood still for 30 seconds before they realised I couldn't care less, but I was surprised to see all of them were at most 15 years old. Some of my classmates had an incident were another kid gang stole some things from them at our local (heavy drinking) park; of course my friends beat the sh*t out of them after one tried to punch a guy 20cm taller than him in the face, but from what I heard it was definitely a weird experience. Also, are the black trousers, hoodie and balaclava a standardised uniform or something? Like, does M&S sell it as a full outfit? Because why they all dress the same beats me.

Pretty sure Ronnie and Reggie were both gay, although Reggie did marry a beard for a bit, and a woman has come forward claiming she's his secret lovechild. So he might have swung both ways.

I live in Middlesbrough and can confirm it is indeed a very scary and unsafe place at night.
The BBC turned up to my home village (A place called Hemlington) to make a Panorama special about the crimes there. That's how bad it is.

Spent a week in Middlesbrough for work once and saw some much shit, I felt like I was in a simulation. No disrespect but I would never go back personally.

Middlesbrough is a strange place, one one hand you have a lovely beach a short way up the road, then slightly further you have mansions with crackheads on the next road over.

You can't look at London as a whole when comparing per 1000, Peckham alone as 172 per 1000 that is around the same population as Cleveland and there's loads of different places like that in London, it's all the really nice parts of London that brings the average down when comparing.
So this is why it's always London that is spoken about
London is split between 32 boroughs and each borough is the size of an average UK city

Peckham has 107 per thousand, 13th out of 23 Southwark wards. Borough has 500+ per thousand and Bermondsey, Rotherhithe and London Bridge all score higher than Peckham on the crimes per 1000 scale.

Some severe misunderstandings involving the paramilitaries in Northern Ireland
Firstly calling UVF/UDA/UFF "Irish gangsters" is absolute madness, considering their targeting criteria was purely based off of their victims being ethnically Irish - its like calling HAMAS a Jewish group, when their sole purpose is to try to destroy them.
They also weren't gangsters - very few terrorists in Northern Ireland were making money during the troubles. After the Good Friday Agreement they decayed into drug gangs, particularly on the Protestant side. But then to compare these people with the Kinihans is crazy.
Ideology motivated the paramilitaries in Northern Ireland, not money. So they are classified as terrorists not gangsters but their circumstances are so far removed from anything else in the UK that they dont have any comparisons whatsoever.

Great point, I was thinking the same. Completely different game. Though I think the point he was trying to make overall was on media focus on particular groups of people, other than that you're absolutely right.

Gangs can also be influenced by ideology. In America, the origins of crips and bloods is actually ideological then turned to incorporate money.
