What Ricky did at the golden globe was superb: he simply treated them like normal people, bring them back from thei VIPnstatus to normal human status. We all make mistake, we all say and do not nice things, and they are no different. Why should them be treated like if they are different, better than anyone else? And, most importantly, we all have the same responsabilities towards society and our planet.
You're right. There is a feeling of self importance in Hollywood. It leads people to think that they are justified to punch someone in the face at an Oscar ceremony for a mild joke and the rest of the audience to give him standing ovations for it, when most of those actors have made their careers on dressing up in spandex and playing a cgi filled super hero that requires little skills.
Hollywood is still trying to recover from the gapping hole Ricky left behind whilst hosting the Golden Globes. One of the best things I've ever seen on TV. Ricky you are a legend.

@@quinngerlinger7347 What's genius about a depressed guy being a dick to everyone? The humor was weak too. There's a character he put in just so he could rant about things (people talking about dreams, religion, whether ghosts exist) and he always writers her as an idiot to make him seem like the one that always has the "correct" opinion. Yeah, dreams can never be funny to talk about - makes ricky gervais seem like a dull grumpy ass if he's never had a funny dream or heard a funny dream. As for religion, I would agree it's all nonsense but he doesn't need to bring it up all the damn time in his shows, it's a boring overdone topic - religion is dumb we get it. As for whether ghosts exist, he's being willfully ignorant and acting like he knows all that can exist in the world. Ghosts are not some dead person stuck in a place (they would go nuts and there is no evidence to support that) it is a very real phenomena that people don't understand, people don't know what they are. I'd rather not believe in this phenomena as it is very problematic indeed if a house becomes haunted, and there is a large variety in the type of "ghosts" one can have with different levels of severity. But of course she didn't say any of that, she just shuts up when he says his weak uninformed opinion.
Ricky Gervias is a legend not just for his comedy but for his openness and "I don't give a f*ck about what other people think" attitude. He doesn't bend the knee to anyone and sticks to what he believes. May he continue to be what he is and continue to be successful.
You have this wrong. Its Ricky Gervais...and he is not just saying he don't care about what people think, he is saying he doesn't care period. You are a person and you like Hollywood is paying him and making him rich. Do you seriously think that Ricky Gervais the COMEDIAN is telling the truth? Look at what he said about Steve Carell and Tim Allen. Ricky is a arrogant uncaring hypocrite and you are one of the f*ck's who is caring about someone who is lying claiming not to care about you and the people who are making him millions. You are like the Christians who made Kenneth Copeland rich and vote for Donald Trump, having no clue that you are supporting the very opposite of what it is you think you are supporting. You are being scammed by Gervais and Hollywood mate, like a football fan who gives money to a league which cares nothing about the fans and nothing about football.
He is a legend to me. He's a comedy genius and a real genuine guy. Hollywood is full of disingenuous narcissists so it doesn't surprise me that they hate him. Narcissists hate people who are genuinely happy, don't take themselves too seriously, re able to be authentically themselves and secure in who they are and don't really care what everyone thinks. Narcissists lack all these things. Anyone who mirrors back to a narcissists a bad image of themselves or who make them feel inadequate are devalued(they look for your flaws or make them up) and are hated. It's part of their defense mechanism.
I never despised David Brent. I felt sorry for him from day one. Rickys depiction of a desperate, lonely middle aged loner who just wanted to be loved was absolutely sublime and will never be bettered
the christmas specials of the office, with tim and dawn getting together and ricky finding that lady always brings me to tears, I have watched the series about 15 times all the way through, that and red dwarf will be forever my favs.
I think the main reason a lot of other celebrities are scared to be like him is because they're famous off the backs of others. Agents, Producers, Directors, all have a bit too much control on celebrity careers, and Ricky built an empire aside from that as much as any famous person really can. He's worth tens of millions, and nobody can stop him
have to give it to Ricky Gervais I wasnt a huge fan of him at first but over the years I have become a fan of his as he speaks his mind and often says what people are thinking but never say.
I don't care how quickly he rose to fame, or how insulting that is to celebrities who put it so much work, Ricky Gervais is a natural genius of comedy. He deserves every bit of the accolades he's gotten.
@@appocalypsechild I really would, because I never hear anyone with a bad word to say about him. Indifference at most, unless they're extremely religious or a woke lunatic. And those two groups have a _lot_ in common

Thanks for the vid. I really never knew who Ricky Gervais was or what his life story was. He was just the guy who shit on Hollywood and who I loved for doing it.
Ricky is a legend; Hollywood might hate him (I say might because this is a massive generalization) but I suspect that he couldn't care less because he's genuine and a humbled individual. Ricky dares to be honest and carries himself with integrity. Truly inspirational.
Hollywood will continue to use him like a rag, because he does so much to ridicule those who express their faith and love for God. Don't worry, they'll probably have him back year after year to ridicule as many as he likes- that's why Hollywood loves him, silly bean!🤡
He’s not humble. He’s smug, arrogant and hypocritical. He’s so disgusted by Hollywood but he likes getting paid by the Golden Globes. If he’s so integral then why doesn’t he just not host? Because he likes the money and he likes the attention.

Excellent video - a very sharp and inciteful description of Gervais' work. If "Hollywood" hates you, you KNOW you're doing something right, something good, something justified.
I think his genuineness comes from the fact he didn't mean to become famous. We all love him because at the end of the day he's just one of us - the common people
Extras and life's too short was all about him sucking up to Hollywood and showing off all his famous friends... He only got 'kicked out of Hollywood' when he started making shit films and TV. The invention of lying, Derek are the room style rubbish.
I don't find him particularly genuine. HIs smugness is incredibly off putting. I do wonder at times how much of it is part of an act and how much of it is genuine. Thinking it's an act has helped me enjoy his work more, because if I thought he was genuinely like that, I'd just think him a tosser.
I used to like him, i'll give you an explanation as to why people still don't like him. He used to make actual smart jokes even towards minority groups and they were hysterical, they weren't insulting they were smart. Now though, he's just being a cunt, his old comedy was just wit his new comedy is just shit. Bitch and moan about how i don't understand his comedy or whatever, i don't care. Whatever you say to me won't change my mind that he's fell into just being an arsehole for laughs instead of being smart for laughs, you know what got him famous in the first place.
Yeah he is smart alright. He has pretended not to care about his audience and Hollywood who is paying him, getting people to think he is not one of Hollywood while mocking others for achieving the same or better than he has and getting people to think that is him being humble. Genius! He is as good at pretending as Harvey Weinstein, Jeff Epstein and Donald Trump...master of disguise🤣🤣🤣
He came too film an episode of “ Derek “ at Dumpton Gap in 2012 in the Summer near Broadstairs in Kent , he arrived in a Limo . We all thought here we go another precious celeb , WRONG , he was an absolute Diamond 💎, chatted too all the fans watching it being filmed from the beach cafe , all the cast where constantly in hysterics , he bought loads and food and drink from the local Food Hut , and he had no airs or graces whatsoever, honestly a nicer person , so down too earth , a really lovely kind Guy 😮
His technique of making his actors just fall about laughing for the first few takes of a scene then when they are laughed out he gets the scene he needs is genius.
You have to admire tenacity. Ricky is a role model for never giving up on your dreams and staying true to yourself. In a time where everybody is playing to the algorithm, or ticking off boxes, Gervais typifies what a true artist should strive for.
I thought the takeaway was to be flexible. He tried music, that didn't work so then he tried management. Also didn't work. Tried acting, almost failed immediately like his music career but adapted and also did the directing. Then, finally comedy and the two clicked. He wouldn't be where he is today if he wasn't flexible and willing to try new angles.

one of the best things about ricky is how self-aware he is. he knows he's a privileged white millionare but that self-awareness is what keeps him down to earth and relatable. I like that he's never preachy, which sets him apart from equally wealthy celebrities
I feel like I have been under a rock. I just discovered Ricky Gervais on Netflix. One of his comedy specials. Loved him. I do remember his MC'ing the Golden Globe Awards, thought all he said was brilliant! Now I've seen Derek, twice, After Life and other works of his. His talent is boundless. Love all he does.
Gained a lot of respect for how he handled the Golden Globes, amazing a British guy better understood the American public not caring for the opinion of celebs on politics or social crap at reward shows. Hollywood is not some high esteem club of the morally righteous people, if someone is "allowed" to be part of that club they are not there for good reasons.
Nowadays, most people on LinkedIn would spin Ricky's early failures as total Successes. 1. Record deal at 17 2. Managed top pop band in 20s 3. Developed personal brand
Very inspiring human being. People take everything way too seriously and get offended way too easily almost like they looking for something to be offended about. Fyi well done to him and his success what a story and very inspiring to others
Yes, Ricky has made a spectacular career for himself whining about how much he's offended by this and that. The hypocrisy of this bunch is concerning, but really quite adorable as well🤭
After Life is a real story, for men like me now experiencing a midlife crisis. I think Ricky is an amazing human, and I find inspiration in all his work, words, and wisdom. Live love or don’t, but laugh.
You do realize that they kept inviting him back so that more people would watch the golden globes, right? such a role model. And one of the most funny comedians because of his insight into human behaviour. He is honest to his internal self and brave in using that as the source of his comedy, because people that are not as in touch with this will see it on face value as simply offensive. No? I don't respect anyone who uses their platform to punch down on minorities when they've got actual real targets. Everyone cheers his Golden Globe speech but when was the last time he went after them? All he does now is pick on minorities. That doesn't deserve respect.
The best way I could describe Ricky is that he's the closest thing modern comedy has to a Court Jester. Part of their role involved bringing news to the king that no one else could/would because they'd likely lose their head if the tried.
I remember him complaining about not being able to eat peanuts on a flight because someone was deathly allergic, and he was saying too bad, it's a miracle she'd lived that long anyway
Ricky Gervais is adored and admired by all comedians. That’s all he cares about. He doesn’t care about what you think or the press or movie stars. He’s happy content and doing what he loves. It doesn’t get much better than that.
The first time I saw Ricky Gervais was when he played with Ben Stiller on Might At the Museum. I didn't know who he was and I didn't care. Then when I saw him doing comedy I thought he was super cool. But my favorite was when he was on the golden globes and right of the bat he told everyone pick up your awards, give a quick thank you then get off the stage. He told Hollywood they were nobodies and I fell in love with his comedy. He is freakin Awesome.
The golden globes .... He just stood up there and humbled the whole of Hollywood. Never thought anyone would ever have the balls to do that but im glad it was him❤ thanks ricky for saying what we are all thinking. I take my hat off to him👊🥃.
Ricky always been himself never tried to be something else. He exposed the celebrity world as the pompous fake creatures they are. Plus he is a genius comedian😄😄😄
Than you. This says exactly what I think about Ricky: he's not a follower, he's not a leader, he's just someone honest that speaks the truth that most of us are afraid say due to society constraints. Be yourself, Ricky, and maybe by watching you we'll learn something too.
His sitcoms, namely The Office, Extras and Afterlife, will sit with me forever, the writing was something I could relate to and genuinely genius all at once. He stands with the Hollywood elite and says what we all think, that is rare and will likely never be seen again imo, he has never changed.
I hate him. He is a lying arrogant uncaring hypocrite who is being loved for mocking and roasting others who has done the same thing he has. He is a emperor with no clothes on and it is not a pretty sight 😵💫
Dude, this is by far your greatest video yet, i cannot believe your sub count is still under 1mil, I dont think thatll be the case for long. Keep doing what you're doing bro 🤙
I’m so with Gervais when he talks about awkwardness only being funny when it’s himself. There’s just something so painful for me in watching someone else bomb. It’s almost like watching an elderly person or a child being kicked repeatedly by an angry mob. Like the stage is one of the most comfortable places for me. I can do my thing and everyone else has to shut up, and that’s just kinda awesome to me. I’ve bombed numerous times, and it definitely hurts a lot to bomb, but the more it happens, the more you get used to it. But then you see other people go through that, especially people new to it, and you have no idea how much it might be hurting and affecting them. So you really just want to yell at that audience for shaming that person when all they were doing was trying their best to entertain. I’d rather just switch places with the person and take the brunt of the shaming. Public humiliation, especially when it’s a new experience, is devastating. On the other hand, tho. Most people will never be able to get through bombing without experiencing it multiple times.
It's the double edged curse of high intelligence correlating with high empathy which is the essence of the philosopher comedian, the greats whose material is timeless, because humans haven't changed that much, technology has merely evolved how we manifest our fallibility
Ricky is hated by those that wish he didn’t point out their flaws, their hypocrisy, or the ridiculous nature of the cult around them. This is a good thing, and I love him for it.

He's an "anarchist clown". I love him for that and speaking the truth.
He talks endlessly about how he doesn’t care what other people think. Endlessly. Which makes me think he does.

Agreed. Ricky is a keen observer and representative of ordinary folk
I think the main reason a lot of other celebrities are scared to be like him is because they're famous off the backs of others. Agents, Producers, Directors, all have a bit too much control on celebrity careers, and Ricky built an empire aside from that as much as any famous person really can.
