I tried to watch the asmongold react, normally he has good insight on various parts of the game. But he just kept muttering stupid comments so much it was actually difficult to hear the audio from the video, so just watched Barney's original vids til now.
this series feels like a bad acid trip, but you're laughing the whole time even though you're sweating through all your clothing, also your moving at 2000 mph on a boat with lots of waves, oceans are puddles.
I think Xaryu is referring to the practice that people would farm Scepter questlines on servers with opened gates (since you can fast-track the reputation part in AQ20/AQ40, instead of farming 42000 fragments), get their Scepter item, then transfer onto a server with closed gates - and rang the gong in the mentioned 10-hour window. Granted the War Efforts was concluded five days prior to that on that realm - which could take months and months for low population servers. Some most recently created RU servers had their gates closed for more than a year. I personally know my guild leader who did it on "EU(RU) - Ткач Смерти", transferring to "EU (RU) - Термоштепсель" to ring the gong, and then transferring back. And as I remember, it was a popular thing to do - back when new realms were opening relatively often, in original WotLK times.
I dont think the people in vanilla knew they were getting the mount since it didnt come out for 2 more patches before Naxx. I bet the people trying for it on the 2019 classic were a lot sweatier than the vanilla ones.
More than just being sweaty, people were prepared. The war effort alone took weeks to a month on original vanilla servers. In 2019 Classic, everyone knew what was coming and people were prepared to speedrun it.
There are patch notes for every new update - and there was a public test for the whole event, as well as for the AQ raids. Original patch was 1.9.0 - it mentions the event's public testing, so people did know about the mount beforehand.
barney did a directors commentary on the baristof quest giver, it was an undercover job by his guild to delay the scarab as much as possible. they told him after the event was over
There was a patch glitch in the original release back in 2006 or 2007 that allowed someone to ring the gong again and get the title scarab lord.. or maybe it was a combination of the fact that the original scarab lord transferred off the server (back then there weren't worn/selectable titles). The guild that originally got it got busted for and suspended for "cascading" raids, somehow you could reset 40mans faster than once per week and they exploited it.. Anyway they transfered off to be competitive and a guy from my guild got the title and mount well after AQ was already open and farmed. This was Boulderfist US

I haven't played in along time but I remember when u had to grind the dreadsteed? For warlock...I also had the "For the Alliance" title...100k kills...I got pretty high in 2v2 arena with a ret / holy pally
Just to clear this up a bit, I'm a day one Grobb player Horde side. Grobbulus was one of the highest pop realms out there, so when they say it was unlikely we were going to finish the grind to open the gates quickly, they're just plain wrong. Final Boss and Goof, which later became Goof Troop, colluded cross faction to keep the rest of the realm from opening the gates so they could collectively get over 30 scarab lord titles for members in their guilds. They literally had people on both factions instantly buying up all of the necessary items off the auction house as soon as they were posted so they couldn't be bought and turned in by people outside of their guilds. We lost out on 3 lockouts worth of loot and fun with the boys because of these selfish people. Barny did a great job with this series, but his viewpoint around this is seriously flawed and self-serving. I will say the pvp on Grobb in the hives was fire, though. The one silver lining.
Players purposefully camping Baristolth to grief and gate other players for no reason other than to be a dick is the most perfect way to describe 90% of the wow community, both retail and classic. It is, without a doubt and by the widest margin, the absolute most toxic community I’ve ever had the displeasure of being in. If the game itself wasn’t fun I would have quit years ago. People really suck. Making him invincible was a smart move, but honestly they should have also perma banned all the griefers too. Those type of players don’t bring anything to the game except drama and bad behaviors to take fun away from other players. There shouldn’t be room in any community for people like that.
