    Man, you are so right about mic locations. I finally learned this like 3 weeks ago with Dirac. Kept getting crummy responses after RC and finally it occurred to me to stop giving it info it doesn’t really need. So kept the measurements tight to LPs, and also gave it two points behind the chairs that had bad peaks that were causing some bad rattle. Results were so good.

    • @hometheatergurus
      @hometheatergurus  3 года назад

      Yep. I've had the same results over and over.

    • @RichardNutman
      @RichardNutman 3 года назад

      I only ever do 3 measurements. Middle of couch, left couch seat and right couch seat. That's where you sit, that's where you want it to sound the best.

    • @danielwander605
      @danielwander605 3 года назад +1

      @@RichardNutman That's probably the case most of the time. Dirac seems to do a better job with the more points you give it though. Also, boomy bass and room rattle bug the hell out of me so i found benefit in finding peaks in areas outside of the listening area and including them in the calibration. But I wouldnt think you could go nuts with that without hurting the listening positions.

    • @RichardNutman
      @RichardNutman 3 года назад

      @@danielwander605 Yeah I think so, you may end up cutting out some frequencies when the mic was in an anti-node, that would've sounded fine on the couch. I think the many positions thing is more for normal living rooms with chairs at the side. A single couch in front of the listening position most likely doesn't benefit from any additional mic positions.

    • @danielwander605
      @danielwander605 3 года назад

      @@RichardNutman Its a balancing act for sure. Lot of trial and error. In the end i was willing to give up a little at my MLP to stomp out the boom-iness behind me. I found it to be a much more enjoyable experience.

    Many thanks for the tips, Steven. Using the Audyssey app to restrict EQ above 400hz is a great tip, and certainly something I’d have never thought of. I set the app to ignore any EQ above 399hz on my Marantz SR7011 with my Bowers and Wilkins 600 series speakers. Although subtle, I’m pretty sure that my speakers are now performing better. I tested this in A/B style with a song I know well and the results seemed positive.
    Thanks again. 🙏🤩

The one thing I did learn from this is using only the seating positions measurements. Every time I have always used all 8 measurements, but for now on, I will stick to the first three for my three seats and be done with it. That should speed things up quite a bit.

    Very interesting about the LPF. I've been reading a thread on AVSforum that states otherwise. They also advocate running a second steeper LPF with miniDSP(48dB slope) as most users tend to boost the last 2 octaves much higher than the mains/surrounds. This has a purpose to lower chestiness in vocals from center channel and also to improve midbass impact.
    Anyways, super fun to experiment and thanks for an awesome channel. Can't wait to see the house build.

    I used all these until I treated my room (only first reflection, too) and set a room curve with mini-DSP 2x4 HD. Now, I turn off Multi EQ and Dynamic EQ, which sounds fantastic! A huge veil was lifted. And don't even get me started on mid-range compensation! And I have been saying for years that cutting Audyssey off after 3 positions were superior. But now it does not matter because it just sets my trim and distance since I turn off Multi EQ. I still turn it on Reference once and awhile and in 2 minutes I am like nope, lol

    Couple of questions... 1) I plan to use a miniDSP HD to set up 3 subs in my room. After that procedure and getting the subs working well together, I wonder about applying Audyssey correction and if it might screw up the results obtained from the miniDSP. Should the editor app be used to disable EQ for the sub channel so that Audyssey doesn't affect the work done with the miniDSP? Or, should the Audyssey correction be applied to the sub(s) "on top" of the miniDSP calibration? 2) When calibrating the sub with the miniDSP, should I shoot to calibrate to a house curve with the bass boosted? The reason I ask is that I plan to use Dynamic EQ in Audyssey. Since that boosts bass at lower than reference volumes, would calibrating to a flat curve work better than a house curve if planning to use Dynamic EQ? Thoughts and opinions are appreciated!

Not a little better...MUCH better. I can't stress enough just how messed up of a decision it was for Audyssey to do this by default. I decided to experiment. Dynamic EQ acts like a loudness control except that it is dynamic meaning that it changes depending on where you have the volume. It mostly boost the subwoofer and the surround speakers. That's great if you want more sound out of those speakers and useful if you mostly listen at lower levels.
    Dynamic Volume is a compression tool. It is not there to cut low freqs of high freqs. What it actually does is remove peaks while boosting lower sounds. So the big explosions in films are reduced. At the same time you can hear more subtle things in films such as a scene where ice cubes drop in a glass or raindrops hitting.

    Great vid! Denon says that you should not limit FR to 300hz because: "There is a belief that room correction should only be applied to frequencies below 300 Hz because that is the frequency range in which most of the room problems occur. This belief is based on an inherent assumption that a properly designed loudspeaker will perform as desired at higher frequencies and thus require no correction. This is not at all contradictory to MultEQ XT.
    If the loudspeaker is in fact properly designed then no correction will be applied to it. One simple fact that the proponents of this theory seem to overlook is that even the best designed loudspeakers will suffer from artifacts at high frequencies produced by reflections from nearby flat surfaces such as display screens, furniture or cabinets. MultEQ XT performs this kind of correction when it is needed to allow the loudspeaker to achieve the performance it was designed to have."
    So what to do?

    It was said that the multeq filter range actually only starts at about 250hz below the frequency you kept it as the software tries to even it out from the original response to the audyssey response and only uses the frequences specified underneath the one you have given it, so to compensate that we put it at 500-600 range for correction .

      Audyssey EQ your speakers + sub to flat. That is why you dont have any bass until you play upwards at 75dB.
      What you must do is either enable Dynamic EQ...or, buy the Audyssey app. Calibrate through that and set up a house curve with a rising bass slope.
      Alternatively you can enable the tone control and adjust the bass, but it only applies to L/R.
      You could also boost the sub, although it tends to make it localizable and sound unbalanced to the main speakers.

      You can decrease the level of the surround speakers before sending the measurements to the receiver.
      Dyn. EQ increase the level by about 1dB for every -5dB you go below reference level ( 0 dB ) .
      So, if you listen mostly at -15dB below reference just lower the surrounds by 3dB and you are good to go.
      It's not optimal if you go above -15 dB below reference, but still better than the overly aggressive boost.
      After all this time there's still no way to just disable the surround boost when using Dynamic Eq. unfortunately.
      It seems Audyssey no longer cares about the app and have moved on from it. 🤦‍♂️

To avoid crash, keep to a so small area as you can. And keep it on a line. Usually you only need to run 3 position measurements (Audyssey xt32) for the room correction to understand the room. I only run 5 well placed positions. 2 of them are exactly where left ear and right ear are in the sweetspot. 1 position at the tipp of the nose, and 2 at shoulder with.

    Just found this video after reading recommendations for ages, i upgraded earlier this year to a denon x2800 from a x2300, I always used 8 positions on the audyssey app with both avrs and a tripod for measurements since for the last couple of years, I did just use to use cushions as recommended. Audyssey killed dialogue on the 2800h and the sound at times sounded flat even with setting audyssey to only equalize to 400-500hz, I had to have dialogue enhancer on high. I thought I would give your recommendations a quick do, I just ran 3 positions on top of cushions and set audyssey to equalize to 310hz, my system is so much better and I no longer have to turn dialogue enhancer on at all.
