We saw one of the seven mirrors being polished in Tucson at the Steward Observatory Mirror Lab a few years ago. Awesome project.

Same here. We were on a cross country road trip and in Tucson to visit Kitt Peak, there was a mirror lab tour available and we got in. Absolutely agree, it was awesome to see.

I read that the basic design of the GMT will be 'better for some types of observations than that of the EELT '. Why is that?
Looking forward to the 3 giants in operation: GMT, EELT and TMT (if it gets built despite local protests).
As a European, I'm especially looking forward to the EELT - which, when finished, will then be the largest in the world! Maybe you in the USA should then build an OWL? ;)

This one is only a little one compared to the other ground ones to come. But they will be much later than this one.

"The better types" reference is probably referring to the fact that the GMT will not have "artificial spikes" when viewing stars due to the design where EELT will have still have them (almost every telescope have these spikes). Google "gmto will not have artificial spikes" to read more about what causes them in images.
