Graduated dental school in San Francisco 12 years ago with 490k in student loans, almost all from dental school, bare bones living expenses and interest that accrued during the last three years of school. Have paid somewhere between 200k-300k over past 12 years and still owe over 630k on it as of now. Yup, there's no copping out here, it's just been impossible to pay it down. And to escape rising real estate and better jobs we slowly moved across the country to rural east coast several years ago. Still struggling. We finally got ourselves into our own home, out of rented townhomes and apartments just this year, and driving 13 year old cars we paid cash for, no fancy vacations except to see family. Eat almost entirely at home. No high life. Dave Ramsey style everything. Just trying to figure out how this is gonna play out.

Why would you choose to borrow half a million for school?

  • @mattgrady5301

Imagine being so smart you go to college but yet don’t understand how a loan works.

  • @RandA1220

She mentioned how much she owes but not how much she makes? Dentist in SF aren't scraping by and making nothing.

Well,....sorry. Im a 50 year old and have been paying back a loan i received 25 years ago. ..Yep. No 'Poor Me' was ever granted my way. If i dont pay then my license is suspended and i am placed on garnishment. .whether it takes 10 , 20 or 30 years..Yes, i have to pay.... as You Should Too.

  • @heyaisdabomb

This is exactly the problem. College is too expensive, even if you go to become a doctor or lawyer or dentist. There's going to be a massive shortage of doctors especially in the coming decades. But keep thinking you don't benefit from others going to college.

  • @AwkwardTruths

Why is she 480K in debt? Not because of student loans but because of this: Over four years, a dental student can expect to pay anywhere from $210,625 (public school) to $353,008 (private school) and up. IT SHOULD NOT COST THAT MUCH. Gov must claw back money, reduce public tuition or limit loans before forgiving anything.

    The university’s are a big

  • @Ni-fg6je

Why aren’t they addressing the actual issue? They need to put something in place where it stops students borrowing a ridiculous amount of debt. They need to make it way more strict instead of handing out loans to ANYONE. These 17/18 year old kids have no idea how badly they are screwing themselves over and when they do realize its too late.

  • @johnduckett243

She borrowed the money, she should be responsible for paying it back. Why is this even newsworthy? Slow news day?

  • @hidingfromu5293

Eh, pay the minimum. Splurge on everything else. They’ll forgive you when you kick the bucket. They can’t make your family pay unless they co-signed. Buy life insurance and leave your property to your heirs.

  • @SalonNews

Well, she better get to work then.

  • @MyWitsEnd.

Not to mention, this all hurts us. Why do you think doctors, dentist, and lawyers all charge so much? Because it takes half a million to get the job. If they have to not only work for a brutal degree that requires extensive research, but also pay half a million, you should expect them to charge as much as they please. The higher the schools charge for their tuition, the higher the graduates will charge for their work. It is pretty simple why colleges should charge less. Some reason no one is seeing this.

Im glad I skipped college after a bad experience the first day of enrollment they try to ripped me off financially I wanted to be a part time student and they wanted to force me to be a full-time student they chose the classes for me and everything and just to make matters worse they pull out their calculator and told me that I was going to owe them a large amount of money for full time student. I had the money to pay for my part time school. They had the nerve to insult me and tell me that I wasn't been serious about college because I didn't want to be a full-time student. They wanted me to be in debt and I was like I am nobody sucker I'm glad I skipped college because after all the hard work is hard to find jobs you study for without experience they don't want to hired you and have to end up taking a different job that you didn't even study for. This is the reality of many college students they don't get a break sometimes and you stuck with all those bills so you have no other choice to take whatever jobs come your way. If I can't afford college I will skipped it I don't want to be in slavery under debt.

  • @Liberalcali

We need to get the government out of education why else do you think the costs keep rising.

  • @neuroticnation144

Almost a half million for dental school? That’s insane! No, there’s no way to work that out! That’s a small house in the Bay Area! These costs are cripplingly high and are a detriment to society.

  • @DanTheVocalist

Pay your dues so us living without debt can afford the lives we deserve

  • @paulngo4631

All dental students know the debt will be 500k after graduating. She is just explaining not complaining. Glad she did not make excuses.

  • @johnanderson8046

I bought a house and made mortgage payments for 30 years until it was paid off. I guess I should have gone to the liberal Democrats instead and whined about how "unfair" my loan is and demanded "loan forgiveness." That's the new mentality.
