Same here brother, same here. I had been trying to remember the name of that old game for ages when I finally stumbled across this video. Scrubbing through all the old versions of Lode Runner that just didn't look right until I got to The Legend Returns and that was it. Amazing game. Amazing memories.

Loricel did some good sound sample compression in the ST adaption! I always admire the fact they managed to get the old speaker to play authentic samples as a means of music and sound effects in an otherwise primitive sound card. The game controls in their games may not be very good, but I definitely can say that they win in the sound department for computer games in the mid-late 1980s!

One 'version' that this video's author (understandably) didn't know about is *Apple Lode Runner* , a remake by Spoonbill Software.
Along with a level editor, this freebie has thousands of levels available including the original and Championship ones.
People originally had to e-mail the author and wait a few days to get this game but it's currently available for download via his web site.
Feel free to give it a try when you have the chance. ^_^

Legend Returns/Mad Monks revenge are the absolute best versions - great music(atleast from psx/saturn version on), beautiful drawn graphics that are not too retro but not too modern either, great gameplay additions(bombs, items )that don't interfere with classic gameplay too much(if the level doesn't have them you play just like the old lode runner), online and splitscreen multiplayer, easy level editing/sharing for infinite replay value. It's just the absolute best of the ports

    Pre-1984 ports:
    - NES/Famicom is one of my favorite port due to Field of View, graphics and sound.
    - Enterprise have additional enemy for extra difficulty
Sharp X68000 port: It's NES/Famicom port on STEROIDS uh i mean x2 speed
Although the uploader missed the Lode Runner Championship which is one of the challenging lode runner games on that time (originally released in 1983 on Apple II while Famicom in 1985). I only cleared 7/50 stages during my childhood days.

I remember playing the Apple II version. Loved it. Interesting Irem’s Arcaro version replaced the robot guards with cavemen, and one SNES version had the focus on sweets instead of gold (the runner had to get candies instead of gold bullion) while another had the runner as an anthropomorphic animal. Lode Runner Legacy you wonder if in the non-classic mode it was Minecraft-inspired.

I have played Lode runner The legend returns back on windows and had played a little of the demo of Load Runner Legacy. I didn't know about these other versions that were for the super famicom, GBC, GBA, or the one on DS. The 360 one I never saw and looked sweet too! I played the Apple II version to death and my sister & I had multiple floppy disks full of levels we made. The only other version I played was the gameboy version. I was disappointed that you couldn’t save your own created levels…

I had no idea there were so many versions. I see now that the version I played back in the day was The Legend Returns one, 1994, for Windows. I finished all the levels (could it have been as many as 150 levels?)
