I'm 23 now and I grew up listening to Social D. First concert was when I was 13, got to go on stage with Mike. He asked our favorite bands, and the kid i was i yelled into the mic "Social Fucking D" and jumped off stage and got to crowd surf around the whole venue. They did grow up and evolve into what they are now, which all of us did too. Been a sick boy since 96✌💯
No. Social Distortion stayed true. Their long time fans can relate with the change. It's good stuff. Mike Ness is not closed minded on music. The younger kids may not understand it; however, us longtime fans appreciate the minor changes.
Some people need to know Mike Ness's roots. He did explain them in this interview. Music is an evolving thing. When bands get older their music changes. I like it that way because it does not get boring that way. I like to see how a band evolves and changes with time. The band has always had a country blues feel to their music even though it is considered punk rock. Just some people seem to not truly listen to what they are saying. If you truly appreciated Mike Ness and the band Social D, you might understand this. I hate haters.
country and blues is very punk anyway. Iv been in the street for 7 years, living as a crust punk train hopper, and let me tell you, we all listened to country. Hank Williams, Boxcar Willie and Johhny Cash are a few exemple. Anyone trying to label punk as having to listen to only punk music is someone who knows nothing. I agree with your comment, its nice to grow up with the band. you cant be a 18 yrs old rebel your whole life, eventually, you grow up. Iv had acquaintances who stayed 18yrs old their whole life, they are still living in the street and they are dying every single year. They are idiots, if you ask me. At 15 yrs old, they had an idea and they stuck to it their whole life until they die, but what kind of idiots keeps to his 15 years old mentality. anyway.
gobanito I was 5 haha.. and I miss my youth too, so I can imagine for you. You got another 20 years pf good living before you get really old though. I mean if you dont die of cancer before or whatever else.
gobanito I wasn't even born yet. I'm scared of growing old and loosing my youth, everybody always says it was the best time of their life. That only tells me that it just has to get worse the older i get.
This is by far a great honest realistic interview it's too bad MTV doesn't have any of this form of entertainment like it then, but oh well that's life.
im 17 and have been listening to them my whole life I still have the guitar pic mike ness threw me during crown of thorns when I was 8 years old. ill never forget that night or the security guard that saw me in the crowd and let me sit on the stairs connecting to the stage
So Glad to have Social Dx in their original form albeit ( '88-'98) Don't get me wrong I still go everytime their close it just seems he sings alot slower nowadays. Naturally w/ age the songs do slow down, but the music isn't any slower, just Ness' singing. I saw them In CVolumbus Oh. a year ago & he gave me an impression that he sort of stutters now. I PRAY to God its not an early onset of Parkinsons or something. ATOMBOMB~T.N.T.
I love Social Distortion but… “Social Distortion is the only band to come out of the Los Angeles punk era to have kept it together” I believe Bad Religion has an objection
Theres different thinking in current years. He likes the idea of not knowing the ins and outs of people. Just the music. That's what I think of Hollywood folk. And the sold out lifestyles lol.
If that is how you feel then stop trolling. A lot of us long term fans still like Social Distortion. I'm sorry that you are caught up in your adolescent rebellion and can not appreciate music for what it is.
1975 Deluxe, 3 piece maple neck, with P90's replacing the mini-hums. He has notoriously told the story of Neil Young's guitar tech introducing him to P90's. After that tour he started swapping his guitars for deluxe. The famous gold top with the woodpecker is a '75 deluxe. He now has Seymour Duncan P90's specially wound for him in his deluxe. Those deluxe aren't in this video. It would have been right around this time he made the gear switch.
too bad they're wrong and Bad Religion stayed around too. however i can't hate on this because this is actually a great interview and i'm glad MTV aired it
i do agree, but in my opinion, at least theyve contiued to evolve. some bands just keep trying to do the same fuckin thing year after year until its just to the point of annoying..........at least i can say ive been to some social d shows back in the fuckin day, no matter how weird they sound nowadays.
Too bad Jay z , beyonce, rhianna, etc are more relavent today to youth than bands that actually had a message, made people think politically!!!!!! OBAMA for 4 years, more! Get politically motivated!!!
>theyve contiued to evolve How so? Doing hank williams corn-ball shit? It's not upbeat enough for me. I'd rather listen to some billy idol or some real rock n roll instead of social d, they got too mellow.
Mike ness is my idol. 🎶 🎵 im under recovery from alcohol. Im a musician too. And this inspired me. I will be myself and a great musician. 🙏🏼
RIP Dennis....Gotta love those two together, always.
I loved when you played with Neil Young. . I saw two shows and they were the best.

I have a guitar pick from Mike Ness; he is really one of the greatest rock stars in history!
They represent the history of punk country blues rock

Mike Ness inspired an entire fashion style that has influenced everyone of today and they don't even realize it.
Which he took directly from the greasers of the '50s.
Lol no he didn't he just switched from punk to greaser

Me too, they are so to their roots, not many like that in the music biz
im 17 and have been listening to them my whole life I still have the guitar pic mike ness threw me during crown of thorns when I was 8 years old. ill never forget that night or the security guard that saw me in the crowd and let me sit on the stairs connecting to the stage

Mike Ness beat the heroin monster that alone is a lifetime achievement!! God bless him.

I wish more punk bands wrote songs about the hotels they stayed in last night. it would be a breath of fresh air for sure!
Wow, there’s still empty space on Mikes arms here!
"ICON"
Mike Ness and Dave Gahan's father
must've been a traveling roadie. ;)
Its a good obsession to have!

weird to see Danell talk knowing he would die only 8 years later
News Flash: It's ALL corporate rock.

This is attracting a lot of squares. Weird, they should go back to their stone temple pilots CDs and fuck the hell off. FBT!
Strangely attractive...
They were from the future

Wasn’t mtv. It was much music (Canadian music programming)

where'd that come from?
The interview was on much music (the Canadian mtv) back in ‘92.
Oh really, where is it then? Screeching weasel were late to the game. Descendents would have been one of the early ones in socal.

Guy never did a shot of dope in his life, or a burg, said that shit to look cool.
he sounds out of it
so hot
he seems like he's out of it here
That’s how he always sounds, he’s sober af though.
"I think the kids today are smart" yeah... wait till you see the millennials. hahaha
Been a fan of the band since 1990 but lost interest after the last album which is a piece of uninspired shit. Too bad.
>theyve contiued to evolve

Social D turned into a boring country band.
NewMusicNetworks STFU
You take social D in the pooper
Are you serious? STFU
Social D turned into shitty boring country-rock.
Bands like D.I., Adolescents, and a few others stayed true.
