A shout out to Troy high school and CSUF! I grew up in that neighborhood and went to Troy. Social Distortion was playing locally and I didn’t catch this show that day, but definitely did enjoy seeing them live back in the day! Troy High school class of 89’.
Wow rare footage! Thanks for the post. Social D playing in their hometown of Fullerton/OC. I went to CSUF after this time period in the late 90’s, but I remember they had up and coming bands play outdoors on Wednesdays at noon. Probably the same location as here
Mike Ness wrote Prison Bound in 1987 and recorded it at Casbah Studio in Fullerton. It was released January 1988 on Prison Bound, their second studio album. So yes he was thinking of 1945, which was written in High School back in 1979 or 1980, when he delivered the narrative intro to Prison Bound. Regardless, all of their music is good and I love the rawness of this concert footage. I graduated from CSUF in 1984, so I missed this concert as I was grinding at work as an Entertainment Industry Banker financing movies to become fat and rich as Mike would sing. Hey it pays the bills.
Prison Bound is basically a prequel, Mike Ness was gonna go to prison but didn't because the prison got blown up. It reminded him of the Hiroshima/Nagasaki bombings so he wrote 1945, and for some reason wrote Prison Bound after instead of before it.
As much as I like the tone that Mike & Jonny have with the P-90 Deluxe LP thru a modded Bassman & P-90 Junior thru The Satellite rigs, that Humbucker Custom LP thru the Marshall JCMs & Dennis's Special LP thru JCM during 90ish; used here gave alot of punchy midrange. Though it seems every change along the way and in between has never been bad. Really good ears and feel for what gear suits the sound. Another great slice of historical footage for us fans. Thanks again! PS Not to mention the drumming was always rock solid.
I agree, the sound here is much more angry and punishing than with the P90s. P90s are more like a fine wine, whereas the humbuckers are like a good bourbon.
Chris: IIRC, Social D also played at University of San Diego shortly after this but residents on the other side of Tecolote Canyon complained about the noise, so San Diego Police Dept. showed up and shut you down after only two songs. I wish we had gotten the whole performance.
I was there! It was my Junior year at Troy High School across the street. Mike Ness went to Troy also before he dropped out of school. I think we can all agree that was a great decision! I’ve seen them many times since then.🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼
I dig the sound of the twangy leads on guitar back in these days. Curious, is this before the words were finally settled on cold feelings? For some reason it sounded like the lyrics were different. Thanks and keep on posting great videos you have been putting out!👍
This is SO SoCal 😊
As as Huge SD fan…this is a treat
Thx
Glad you enjoy it!

I went to CSUF, but graduated 1984. Back then it was X and Jon and the Nightriders in the Pub.
I went to CSUF in the late 90’s and remember the free Wednesday concerts at noon. Mostly up and coming band, some with a big name.

Honestly nothing beats their current live sound tho. Just saw them in Detroit couple weeks ago and the p90s do not lack power
Thanks Chris! What a great time to be alive. Wish i was still in LA, I'd visit the restaurant for sure!
I was there!! Damn, CSUF had all kinds of killer shows around then, including Rollins Band!
I was there too! I remember No Doubt playing the quad around that time also.
@@Sagehelena Yes! When Eric was still on keyboards. They played in the pub next to the bowling alley, also…
yes
Holy snaps!! This is sick y'all! Captured this and the era perfectly with this!! Appreciate you sharing! Music is Life!!

Social Distortion is for the people, especially the under dog.
Darn right !!
😀
Not the best sound but this is very cool....a lot of people think of them being in dark clubs at midnight but they're SoCal all the way
thx
Mike butchered cold feelings lol. Must be hot AF out there
I feel the impression that the girl in the pink bow might be Mike's wife Christine. She's giving me supportive girlfriend energy. Am I right?
prolly
"This" is called 1945? We who know...
I love SD but not a fan of all the blues stuff he does
