    C4 tip for you replacing the fuel filter. Remove the fuel pump fuse and let the car run until the car quits. it will drain the fuel line and reduce the pressure. Then you don’t get sprayed with fuel.

  • @berniefranks4876
    @berniefranks4876 3 года назад +14

    As others have stated, a good trick is to just pull the fuel pump fuse while it is running and let it stall on it's own. You won't leak any fuel.

    I'm so glad I found you on RUclips. I have looked at others and found them to be nothing but a complete waste of time. your informative and have by far the best instructional videos. I have the same C4 you have there that was a Barn find. I am going to utilize all your videos. starting with the cleaning. Thank you.

    Thanks for the video, I just did mine. I have a 94, it was easier for me to disconnect the rear of the fuel filter, then free up the 2.5 ft of fuel line to the engine, and pull the last mile fuel line and filter up through the engine bay. Replaced the filter on the filter on the bench. There were two clips to negotiate with on the way out.

    they engineered the C4 for easy service access, GM knew that people were keeping that car around for a long time! you should cut open that old filter to see how much crap was stuck in that filter.

    Hi Chris, really like the location of the filter, easy to get to! Also, I’ve always loved those wheels on the C4. As a thot next time, I have a variety of rubber & cork plugs that I use to immediately stop the flow of fluids when I’m disassembling something. I can just plug the line temporarily without losing much of whatever the fluid is. Just a thot for next time!
    Great C4 content as always! Oh, and I love the sound the C4 makes now! Awesome!

    Chris, thanks for the video, we unhooked the battery and took out the gas cap to release the pressure before we changed out the filter,. We lost very little fluid this way. We also found out that the filter looked rather new, but when we drained the filter later, the contents were really dirty inside, almost black as oil/dark iced tea. However, it ran like a jack rabbit when the new one was installed. We may need to flush out the gas tank.

    Too late now Chris, but on my Scag mower and small engines I winterize, I turn off the fuel and run the engine until it dies. You could have removed the fuel pump fuse (bottom right fuse) and ran the vehicle until it ran out of gas. Lastly, it's not 13/16" it's a 20mm. The C4 is metric and if you try the 13/16" vs a 20mm you can se the 20mm is tighter and fits better, although the 13/16" will work.

    So jealous of non rust belt (or just not winter driven) vehicles. I tried doing the fuel filter on my old S10 a couple years ago and it was rusted on. Finally got it off and ended up busting a rusty fuel line from twisting it too much also. Had to drop the tank to replace the line lol

    If you take the gas cap off it release the pressure. You will have less gas flowing when the filter comes off.

    i've pumped air with a bicycle pump through the feed hose at the fuel tank and got very little fuel leaking from the filter.

  • @colt5189
    @colt5189 3 года назад +1

    When I did my fuel filter, I waited until my low fuel warning light came on, and then I drove it around the block a few times. And I had a catch can to collect the little gas that came out. As the first time I did it, I kept getting gas pouring out as everyone had said when you pull the fuel pump fuse with it running, that you'd relieve the fuel pressure and then not get much gas out, but the gas kept pouring. So I ran it dry the 2nd time I did it. Obviously you'd need a gas can with gas to at least put a gallon back in.
    Also, I recommend replacing the orings when doing the fuel filter. Might as well since you are there and would have to do that in the future if they start leaking. Many don't seem to know there are orings there.
    Other thing, is my 89 has a metal retaining strap that goes around the gas filter that you bolt to the car. You have to take it off the old filter and put it on the new filter. Maybe the previous owner just forgot to put it back on, or maybe the 88 didn't come with that retaining strap? My 89 also has a heat shield that you have to remove in order to get to the gas filter.

  • @paulmoss7940

    You can do the aforementioned and then remove two clamped hoses from the sending unit under the fuel door rubber seal. Supply and return. You will drop very little fuel . Some folks just clamp them off.

    Wasn’t this easy on My 95. It’s @ a 45 degree angle & the upper line was a pain to reach & being up top it was a lil rusty & hard to break free. Ended up disconnecting the fuel line clips and pulling it topside to finally get it. Disconnected the battery & opened the gas cap as others said. Barely any leakage. Js

    My 1993 C4 will run for 20 or 30 minutes then shutt off. After it sits for 45 minutes it'll crank up and run like there's nothing wrong. The fuel pump turns on when it shuts down but when its turning over, it sounds like it's out of gas while trying to crank it. But after 45 min. or so it'll crank right up like it has never messed up before. I'm just a shadetree machanic. Would replacing the fuel filter be a good start before I send it to the shop?

  • @nitropowerful1

    Much easier to do this on the L98 cars than the LT1 - & LT4 cars! Word to the wise, disconnect the RETURN line at the tank to prevent the siphoning affect and gasoline pouring out of the line when disconnected; at least on the LT1 & 4 cars!
