C4 tip for you replacing the fuel filter. Remove the fuel pump fuse and let the car run until the car quits. it will drain the fuel line and reduce the pressure. Then you don’t get sprayed with fuel.
As others have stated, a good trick is to just pull the fuel pump fuse while it is running and let it stall on it's own. You won't leak any fuel.
Every time I want to check something against my Haynes manual, I hear “What’s up guys, it’s Chris from My Corvette Life”. Haha I feel like you’re my neighbor Chris!
C4 still looking good! Sold my c5 this weekend, looking at a c7 but prices are insane right now. Keep up the great vids Chris!
I'm so glad I found you on RUclips. I have looked at others and found them to be nothing but a complete waste of time. your informative and have by far the best instructional videos. I have the same C4 you have there that was a Barn find. I am going to utilize all your videos. starting with the cleaning. Thank you.
Thanks for the video, I just did mine. I have a 94, it was easier for me to disconnect the rear of the fuel filter, then free up the 2.5 ft of fuel line to the engine, and pull the last mile fuel line and filter up through the engine bay. Replaced the filter on the filter on the bench. There were two clips to negotiate with on the way out.
Nice. That’s a real clean C4!
Thank you. You’re videos r the best!
they engineered the C4 for easy service access, GM knew that people were keeping that car around for a long time! you should cut open that old filter to see how much crap was stuck in that filter.
I just want to thank you for a concise to the point video, with good audio. (I'm so used to five minutes of rambling, followed by mouth breathing in how to car videos)
One of my favorite quotes on My Corvette Life videos is "Oh boy"... I know the feeling all too well when working on my C4!
Hi Chris, really like the location of the filter, easy to get to! Also, I’ve always loved those wheels on the C4. As a thot next time, I have a variety of rubber & cork plugs that I use to immediately stop the flow of fluids when I’m disassembling something. I can just plug the line temporarily without losing much of whatever the fluid is. Just a thot for next time!
Great C4 content as always! Oh, and I love the sound the C4 makes now! Awesome!
Nice job Chris 👍
Chris, thanks for the video, we unhooked the battery and took out the gas cap to release the pressure before we changed out the filter,. We lost very little fluid this way. We also found out that the filter looked rather new, but when we drained the filter later, the contents were really dirty inside, almost black as oil/dark iced tea. However, it ran like a jack rabbit when the new one was installed. We may need to flush out the gas tank.
Thanks Chris, I need to change the filter on my 84. Hope your Grandpa continues to do well in recovery.
Keep in mind 84 has a different filter, there are no nuts just hose with clips, which makes things even easier.
Great, I need all the help I can get. Thanks Bajon!
Great video Not sure what year C4 you have but everything looks like my 87 i am about to change my filter also thanks for showing me how its done.
Nice...
Una pregunta , que síntoma tenía para que decidieras cambiar el filtro de gasolina ....gracias y excelentes videos
I wish I could get at my filter that easy. I got some king of exhaust part rat in the way. I had to bail out of the job. Plus my jack stands are short.
Too late now Chris, but on my Scag mower and small engines I winterize, I turn off the fuel and run the engine until it dies. You could have removed the fuel pump fuse (bottom right fuse) and ran the vehicle until it ran out of gas. Lastly, it's not 13/16" it's a 20mm. The C4 is metric and if you try the 13/16" vs a 20mm you can se the 20mm is tighter and fits better, although the 13/16" will work.
Also raise just the front of the car formfuel filter. Tank is higher than filter line.
I wish it was that easy on my 1994 convertible. Plus you have to perform the task with little to no fuel in the car or it will drain forever. Good Job!!!!
Yup, convertibles have braces on the underside which are right over the fuel filter, making the job hard and messy
That X brace tho.....stiffens her up.
Should have pulled the fuel pump fuse and run the car until turns off
Any tips for Restoring The Electronic digital dashboard. and actually the radio area too.
So jealous of non rust belt (or just not winter driven) vehicles. I tried doing the fuel filter on my old S10 a couple years ago and it was rusted on. Finally got it off and ended up busting a rusty fuel line from twisting it too much also. Had to drop the tank to replace the line lol
If you take the gas cap off it release the pressure. You will have less gas flowing when the filter comes off.
Chris, isn't there a bracket holding the filter in place? I see the holes in your car where one should be, but no mention of it.
i've pumped air with a bicycle pump through the feed hose at the fuel tank and got very little fuel leaking from the filter.
When I did my fuel filter, I waited until my low fuel warning light came on, and then I drove it around the block a few times. And I had a catch can to collect the little gas that came out. As the first time I did it, I kept getting gas pouring out as everyone had said when you pull the fuel pump fuse with it running, that you'd relieve the fuel pressure and then not get much gas out, but the gas kept pouring. So I ran it dry the 2nd time I did it. Obviously you'd need a gas can with gas to at least put a gallon back in.
Also, I recommend replacing the orings when doing the fuel filter. Might as well since you are there and would have to do that in the future if they start leaking. Many don't seem to know there are orings there.
Other thing, is my 89 has a metal retaining strap that goes around the gas filter that you bolt to the car. You have to take it off the old filter and put it on the new filter. Maybe the previous owner just forgot to put it back on, or maybe the 88 didn't come with that retaining strap? My 89 also has a heat shield that you have to remove in order to get to the gas filter.
You can do the aforementioned and then remove two clamped hoses from the sending unit under the fuel door rubber seal. Supply and return. You will drop very little fuel . Some folks just clamp them off.
As always great video, is their just one fuel filter?
Yes. Thanks!
Clean c4! Do you have any suggestions for recharging the original ac with r12?
Have it converted.
I bought some r12 to r134 filler adapters and charged with r134. They say that's not a good idea but it has worked fine for several years now, and I'm in Hawaii.
This is on my list of things to do. I think you may be able to pull the fuse for the pump and run the car until it doesn't run anymore, taking most of the fuel out. Anyone done this before? If so, please give details
Yes, you are correct. Do that.
@@berniefranks4876 is the fuel pump fuse in the passenger door jam or somewhere by the fuel pump?
@@fatheroffood1964 under cover pass jamb area dash ,the relay is back in there also.Another tip have the tank low ,below 1/4 to reduce head and siphon. I hate to clamp that hose. You can just take it loose from the fitting. not hard.(under fuel door rubber seal)
@@fatheroffood1964 Yes, passenger door jam
Wasn’t this easy on My 95. It’s @ a 45 degree angle & the upper line was a pain to reach & being up top it was a lil rusty & hard to break free. Ended up disconnecting the fuel line clips and pulling it topside to finally get it. Disconnected the battery & opened the gas cap as others said. Barely any leakage. Js
Hello sir,
My 94's engine sputters when I open the throttle up. This is especially prominent in 5th and 6th gear. Do you have any ideas what may be the cause?
Mines throwing a code 44. Running lean. I hope this is the solution
Can you talk about that jack ? Price ? Also , you can take loose two rubber hoses under the fuel door rubber seal and not drop much fuel when removing filter. Some folks just clamp em off. Thx for your C4 content.
QuickJacks 5000. $1500
Possibly. But like I said, it may be quicker to just deal with a little spillage.
What’s the cost of the quick lift and where can you buy them at?
My 1993 C4 will run for 20 or 30 minutes then shutt off. After it sits for 45 minutes it'll crank up and run like there's nothing wrong. The fuel pump turns on when it shuts down but when its turning over, it sounds like it's out of gas while trying to crank it. But after 45 min. or so it'll crank right up like it has never messed up before. I'm just a shadetree machanic. Would replacing the fuel filter be a good start before I send it to the shop?
Much easier to do this on the L98 cars than the LT1 - & LT4 cars! Word to the wise, disconnect the RETURN line at the tank to prevent the siphoning affect and gasoline pouring out of the line when disconnected; at least on the LT1 & 4 cars!
Hey, I have an 84 with the crossfire, which side does the "out" marker go on? To the engine or to the fuel tank? I'm having stalling issues and I think the previous one I replaced today was installed backwards
The 92 LT1 they moved it further up the frame so you have to pull the entire bracket and filter out through the top of the engine bay. PITA
I have a convertible and it is not easy access. There is a guard protecting the filter with two bolts as well as a large x member the width of the car. Mine is an 89so I don't know if it is a convertible or if his corvette is missing pieces from it.
I'd add a picture if I could.
Theres nothing wrong with using a adjustable wrench they get a bad rep cus people use them on small bolts that strip easy
Can you tell me the make and model (length) of the lift you are using? Thank you
What is the lift you are using?
Chris. I go to the rear of the car and use a clamp to pinch the rubber line that comes from the fuel tank near the fuel cap. It slows down the flow of fuel greatly.
Damn just by a Dewalt set..
Not sure if all c4s are like that. I have a 94.
It l looks pretty easy I should be able to do it myself right
I have a big fat catalytic converter in the way
Any suggestions?
Remove it.
Wish it was that easy on the convertible 😢
Yes
If yall think you think you can do this without disconnecting anything, please reconsider. Speaking from experience 😭
Hi. How you know the direction is correct? you told that? Not because you see it on the car like that means its right. find out and have a axplanation why. then show it.
I do believe the filter has a directional flow arrow on it.
Fuelpump fuse!! Pull the fuse while the car is Running... Drains the fuel lines.. OMG
Hi it looks pretty ex. I should be able to do this myself rite
just open the gas cap for all new vette'rs
I was curious how you’d stop the fuel from leaking out. I have my answer.
After changing the fuel filter in his 92 corvette, my dads car will no start back
At least the gas was clear..............
I tried mine yesterday. I had the car run and pulled the Fuel Pump fuse to stall the car with min. gas in line. I quit after seeing two lines under the filter, deflector shield and the frame crossmember on my convertible just below it. I'm just going to have a mechanic do it in a real lift and not on jack stands.
That’s A Lot of gas , pull the fuse and run it out
Why didn't you start the car up, leave it idling go to the passenger side and pull the fuse until it runs out of gas instead of all that nonsense come on I thought you were smarter than that!
Only easy if you have a lift 🥲🥲. From the ground… not so much
