Very good thorough job for a C4 oil change. I also replaced my oil drain bolt with a new magnetized one, to attract any metal micro shavings.

I’ll be doing this on the next oil change.

Thumbs up Sir!! Everyone has their little things they do different to take the oil filter off. I normally put a rubber band around the filter (prevents slipping) & then either get a plastic grocery bag or a small trash bag. I put my hand in the bag and then slightly pull the sides up and start removing the filter. When the oil starts to drain out, the bag keeps it off my hands and when it comes off the threads, i just let it go in the bag. A fairly clean filter removal. My dad showed me that! Keep the content coming sir!!!

I know you don't have the C4 anymore but another top tip at 6:15, if you noticed that your oil filter housing looks like it has a build up of coking then you should probably run shorter oil change intervals with quality synthetic oil with good cleaning properties until its cleared up. Chances are the previous owner slacked on their oil changes and used conventional oil most of the time.

I'm going to be trying out the Mobil 1 High Mileage. On the drain plug, many years ago I got a Gold Plug, which has a powerful magnet on the end. And I use the GM crush washers that have a rubber in the middle of the washer. Or the knock off version at the auto parts store.
One trick I do on the oil filter is I break it loose via a half turn. Then I take my metal poker and a hammer and I punch a small hole into the bottom of the oil filter so the oil can drain out of it before I remove it.

I have a C4 and a C5. I use High Mileage Mobil One oil for both (10W-30). For the oil filter I go with Mobil One brand. They cost a little more but they give me peace of mind when the engine is at full throttle - approaching redline.

Use the blue rubber gloves to keep that oils off of your skin, I would also leave the drain plug off while doing the oil filter just incase there is some oil trapped in the lines

I use Mobil one oil as well, have had excellent results, however, I use Mobil one oil filters. I figure if the oil is this good their filters have to be as well. May be wrong but I have used this combination for awhile now.

I love changing oil. Where did you get that yellow catch can? I like using the oil filters for the big block Chevy, they hold a quart of oil and don't hang below the oil pan, usually.

I had to watch this C4 oil change video again to make sure I wasn't missing something or trying to turn the oil filter the wrong way. As it's been a few years since I've changed the oil in it myself. I generally do all the repair work myself unless it's something I can't get to with it up on jack stands. And a while back while at the shop getting something done, I went ahead and had them change the oil while it was up in the air. A month later, I decided to change the oil to something different and I could not get the oil filter off with my large plastic oil filter nut and a ratchet. I ended up trying a metal oil filter remover strap and that ended up denting it and I stopped when I saw the oil cooler rotate a little.
I'm guessing they either over tightened it or they forgot to put oil on the gasket or both. I'll have to have it towed to the shop just to get the oil filter replaced. Never had this happen ever on a car or lawn mower. It's real annoying. Good thing I have a tower provision on my car insurance so I can get it towed without extra cost. I'm just hoping I didn't damage the oil cooler as I don't know if it's a bad thing that it rotated just a little bit.

If it didn't, and continues Not to Leak, you're golden. Rid yourself of that shop as they do substandard work. They overtightened the filter for sure, the filter as you know is only to be tightened hand tight..

Not trying to be a 'know it all' but I usually crack the oil filter loose and let the majority of the oil drain out while its still attached. Then fully remove, flip and let the excess drain into my pan. It's a lot less of a mess that way

    • @One_Shot_Garage
      @One_Shot_Garage 3 года назад +2

Agreed. Getting the feel down for how unscrew the filter before pulling your hand away is the trick. I try to give it a quick spin. Same with the drain plug. Unthread it right to the end where oil starts dripping and then just twist the last thread and pull it away quickly.

Just as a sidebar for if your oil pressure gauge starts appearing to read high (or low) or a mysterious leak starts appearing and dripping on the floor. Well there is a oil line tree that contains a pressure switch and sending unit behind and below the distributor that can be the problem. Noticed a trace amount of oil for the last couple years and the oil pressure just kept getting better with age. Well reality struck after a Sunday drive trailing about half a quart and all over the cat. My case was the pressure switch leaking oil and while digging way back there (requires removing wiper motor, distributor cap, other various lines) replaced both. The oil pressure is probably more accurate now...

Still holding the oil bottles the wrong way...The spout should be "UP" when pouring. That way it doesn't "Blob" out and that is why they are made that way.

Good job but if you let the oil drain for 20min go ahead and punch a hole in your oil filter and let it drain also It saves on the oil mess

They are generally the superior filter that are readily available on the shelf. Mobil 1 is also good. Fram I’ve heard of cardboard filter media deteriorating.

So, I'm going to go ahead with a synopsis. First you go ahead and procure a proper Wix filter and oil. Then you go ahead and warm the engine somewhat. Then you go ahead and drain the oil and filter. Then you go ahead and replace the drain plug and the pre-oiled new filter and go ahead and put the car back on the ground. Then you go ahead and add oil and run the engine. Following this you go ahead and check the oil and make sure its at the full mark. Is there anything else I need to go ahead and do?
