So I have a theory about Downpour's enemy design and red angry ball. In past games Silent Hill draws on its victims' psyche to create monsters and there's strong hints that people don't see the same things as other people. Murphy, depending on your choices, didn't really do much to deserve being there. I think the town itself hasn't got much to work with for Murphy. It's much more focused on the revenge obsessed cop.

That would be a genius thing to do on a game like Silent Hill, thematically it fits as it would mean that as you progress (Kill enemies or advance through the game) your nightmares and fears can't affect you as much as they used to (Be with monsters gradually fearing you more and more or have a reduced spawn rate, the first would fit more for a killing spree progress and the second for a character development progress)

I'm going to say this and try not to sound pretentious as hell, but it kind of makes sense that the monsters here look more like people than not. Silent hill changes the world to the person in it correct? Well for murphy the monsters he face are people like Napier and Soule, (i think that's how they're spelled) his view of monsters would be shaped by the people who caused him the most problems. His fears and issues manifested from people, not an abstract concept like sickness, pregnancy, or isolation.

Something that bothers me though is people saying this game is the only one to do it, which is false.
Both silent hill 1 and 2 brought in the humanoid enemy concepts. While I think 1 and 2 did it better, downpour was definetly not the first to do it

I will give the game this.
It does something interesting with Silent Hill itself plotwise that the other games don't.
    1. Murphy isn't Silent Hill's main target, Anne is. Murphy was brought there to test HER, first half of the game is the town getting him to her and having a short test for him to because why not (Murphy by default will have his epiphany about his son if nothing else no matter what you do, That aspect Murphy always comes to terms with regardless of his actions in game. Whether that's because Silent Hill knew Murphy was gonna pass anyway and the test was purely for the lolz or was relevant for Anne's test, or it was more lenient with Murphy solely because he was needed mostly unharmed for Anne's test.), Murphy has his little revelation a mere halfway through unlike any other protagonist, He is unique in this aspect, meaning the 2nd half is purely about him escaping. Notably, when he get's the boat working he sees a light, Silent Hill was personally done with Murphy, however he was still needed for Anne so it made him go back to finish Anne's test, otherwise it's implied it would have just let him go then and there.
    2. Not all of the monsters fought aren't Murphy's inner demons, 1 is specifically Anne's, it's even implied some of them are tired to unknown parties beyond those 2. It's interesting because in SH2, James only fought ONE MONSTER that wasn't his, which might solely be due to being in proximity to the person it's tied to when it appeared, I don't know if Silent Hill predicted that possibility, but I'm assuming either way it just rolled with it. Here it seems intentional, not that Murphy would ever know this. In the games outside this and 2, this could be explained by the Cult having a hand in it, kinda like with Homecoming where the centipede one is sent after the protagonist and the cop despite having no collection at all to those 2, unlike the other bosses. Downpour is the odd man out, Murphy is only there for the final boss in terms of Anne's and the unknown parties' monsters and it's the only game other than 2 where Silent Hill is the big bad rather than the Cult. Meaning Silent Hill, for the only time where someone's inner demons are directly targeting someone they aren't connected to, and purposefully and not just because they happen to be in the same room as their target like James was.
A decent amount of plot, mostly around Anne, is absent in game and is in a tie in comic sadly, specifically what the Dolls represent. This isn't really interesting, it's just something that I find rather annoying and felt relevant, I hate it when they tie story bits for a video game outside the game. Looking at you World of Warcraft.
Said comic also straight up makes the good ending canon, this makes the game the odd man out in just straight up picking a canon ending, unlike the other titles where multiple endings are somehow canon.
If this game just had a few more months in the oven to polish up gameplay ad maybe the story a bit, it could easily be considered one of the best games in the series.

Having read all those negative reviews, I still decided to give this game a chance. Oh boy, I’m so glad I did.
Initially, I had very low expectations. The first part was exceptionally frustrating, especially the enemies that jump down from ceiling. I usually don’t complain about those things, but combat is nonsensical in this game without any reason: even if you successfully attack your enemy, camera often inexplicably swings in front of you so that you don’t see that enemy and then you get attacked yourself afterwards. This makes the game way harder than it should be. Besides, the entire game is filled with useless junk that makes exploration way less fun than it should be.
Once you get passed those weird design decisions, the game starts really shining. Annoying combat mechanics can be bypassed just by skipping most enemies. Distinguishing usefull items from junk is often possible by moving the camera.
All in all, once you learn the game rules, SH:Downpour becomes a really satisfying experience and definitely one of the better games in the market.

I agree with everything in this review except blaming the devs for shit choices that Konami largely forced on them. It's not easy to look at the original games and play them through to understand why the monsters are scary when Konami forces you into brutal crunch and makes you make a game that's super out of your depth in a short amount of time. There's a good video called "Wha Happun" where Matt McMuscles goes into depth about how unfairly slanted everything was against the poor dev team during that time. I'd highly suggest checking it out.

Downpour really got disrespected by reviews. I do understand performance issues holding it back, but from what I recall it was just dismissed as 'another American Silent Hill', kicked to the curb because people had been burned by Origins and Homecoming especially.
But Downpour does have a good story. It respects the theme it sets up and builds up a unique Otherworld to match it, utilizing the aspect of confinement and drowning instead of just dredging up the 'expected' Otherworld imagery of blood and rust-- it's not as immediately frightening, but it's much more personal. The monster designs are also appropriate for the theme, and I would argue not as lazy as the last few entries that would just recycle evil dogs/evil flying thing/evil crawling thing/sexy nurse because those are the monsters Silent Hill uses-- given the real-world evil that Murphy experienced was hideously human, it makes sense that he's tormented by monsters in human forms.
I also like how the ending system works-- your choices might mean nothing in the storyline (which is congruous with Silent Hill punishing the other characters; those called to Silent Hill must save themselves), but they characterize Murphy retroactively. If you a play a Murphy that dismisses the others and puts himself and his goals first, you get the bad ending, where Murphy gave in to his worst urges; if you instead play him as a character that tried to save or help or empathize with others (and one who was unwilling to kill unless absolutely necessary, hence keeping a low death toll with the monsters) then that contextualizes the reveal completely differently. It's a little more in line with how Silent Hill 2 would judge you as you played-- if you denied the temptations of the town and paid respects to Mary throughout the game, then James' actions are a completely different contextualization than if you gave in to Maria's temptations, or if you allowed James to contemplate Angela's knife. It's not as seamless, but I feel like Downpour really understood a lot about why Silent Hill 2 was such an outstanding experience.
It's also somewhat important, on that note, to mention that Silent Hill 2 *also* isn't that scary, certainly compared to the other games, which are much more overt in their horror imagery. There are parts that are definitely unsettling, but SH2 also had an Otherworld that was much... quieter. Sadder. James' personal hell was mostly about isolation and loneliness, with its monsters used sparingly, and Downpour seemed to be more interesting in evoking that emotion than just painting the walls with crawling bloodstains. (And don't get me wrong, I LOVE the imagery of 1 and 3, but I also appreciate the quieter interpretation from SH2 and Downpour. Again, it's nice that Downpour didn't just lean on the imagery used in previous games.)
I wish Downpour had been given a fairer shot. Seems to me a lot of the reviews at the time were kind of caught up in what a Silent Hill was supposed to look like instead of looking at Downpour for what it was, performance optimization notwithstanding.

I usually don't have that much interest in the game in question to play it myself, or at least don't care about the story. Downpour is a real shame because I feel like a lot of the other later silent hills (except shattered memories I guess) had this real feeling that the Devs were taking the games in directions that didn't fit it, and would've been better as original IPs.
Downpour had a much better sense of what works in silent hill, but if you see how much stuff got cut and how buggy it is it's clear they had very little time or budget to work with. I feel like if these guys had been given more to work with they could've had something really special, which honestly makes it hurt all the more seeing the state it's in.

As far as I'm aware, they released downpour prematurely because its release month is Silent Hill's anniversary, and Konami thought it made sense to release a Silent hill game each week on Silent Hill month, concluding with the Silent Hill film that was coming out that year. This is also part of why the HD collection suffered. It was released for the same reason, but some idiot didn't save the goldmaster for the original games (and then there's book of memories...)

I use to think that Silent Hill was about people being punished for their sins and whatnot, but that's what SH 2 and what some of the other games were trying to be. is. SH is about a cult. The original story is about a cult trying to birth a god.

    • @edmilsoneletrica
      @edmilsoneletrica 4 года назад +9

Yes. There's a spiritual power that gets twisted by the cult practices at trying to birth the god. Silent Hill 1, 3 and 4 were not about punishing the protagonists for their sins. It's funny how wrong most people get this series.

    • @GamingMisthios13

    • @PeixeKing
      @PeixeKing 4 года назад +6

And even SH2 isn't really about "punishing" people for their sins: it's more about broken people trying to deal with buried, unconscious guilt, and Silent Hill having the spiritual power to manifest their unconsciousness, but itself being indifferent to the people in it: other aspect that the western developed games got wrong was to turn the town into some sort of purgatory, a place that has the objective to teach a lesson to people who need punishment, when in fact, it just provides said people the tools for self-flagellation. Yahtzee succinctly describes this in his review:
"There is absolutely nothing physical stopping him from running straight back to his car and going home, maybe picking up a hooker or two on the way back, but he refuses to."
"You start to think that Jaaaaaames's nightmare is entirely of his own creation, as if the town is handing him a set of jump leads and watching as he sticks them on his balls."

For me the worst game in the franchise is Homecoming. I really hated that they shoehorned sexy nurses and Pyramid Head into it, despite them having no connection to Alex at all. On top of that, the game was too Americanised for my liking and lacked this specific Japanese horror atmosphere that I loved in Silent Hill 1-4. Downpour falls short in monsters design but everything else about it felt very good for me. I think the plot was really interesting and engaging, Murphy had a bit more personality than Henry and Alex and the world was pretty neat to explore. Unfortunately I couldn't do many sidequests because I was playing on PS3 emulator and it kept crashing for me A LOT so I had to speedrun it a bit. Those which I managed to finish were fun, so the addition of them was a cool idea. I don't get the hate this game received. For a non-Japanese Silent Hill, developers did a really good job.

They slapped the iconic monster like sexy nurses and Pyramid Head in their for the sake of it, which makes 0 sense because they are in part of James Sunderlands' imagination. The one game in the franchise that did nothing special or interesting. The whole sewer section should be cut from the game, which sewer secrion has no purpose. Alex is a boring protagonist. The music was bland. Personally, it's just my opinion, don't freak. I don't think it's that good. Playing through all the games myself is the one I have to say that lacks. Or least doesn't try to do something special that we haven't already seen before. Least in downpour, they made Murphys character good they fixed the combat a bit more and the world building feels more original and for the character. As well the boogie man is an amazing addon for Murphy. What did Alex get? Nothing good. Besides, the same used monsters. Aka James Sunderlands monsters. Still, im sure you have your reasons. @@thetopdogrob9366 Sure, I respect your opinion. I think Alex was fine as a protagonist. He behaved like a normal guy and he was much more enthusiastic, and manly than Henry or James !
The music ? Wow, I love Akira Yamaoka ! "Elle's theme" from this game is in my car playlist.
I agree that some levels were annoying, I didn't like the graveyard section and the combat took some time to get used to and could be unfair sometimes.
I also liked Downpour. The only SH games that I couldn't force myself to finish were 3 and 4.
Thanks for sharing your ideas !

I know this is an old review, but I really appreciate you giving this game the recognition it deserves. Sure, it has several flaws and its execution isn't always the best, but the story itself had me thoroughly invested and some of the locations are genuinely interesting.
Nicely done. Take my sub; you've earned it.

I think that the reason you, and myself, and most of us aren't scared of this stuff is simply because we've all been desensitized to this stuff after years of exposure.
Like the atmosphere itself in Downpour would be horrifying for a child or someone who's never played or seen horror before.

I'm surprised you didn't talk about the theater puzzle with the cabin. I believe it was a Hansel and Gretel thing, it was rad!

Never heard about this game until I saw your video. Just finished the game. I didn’t think it was half bad. Biggest problem to me outside of the stuttering, frame dipping and freezing was the game’s sound mixing.

"People said it was the worst Silent Hill game ever made."
**Looks at Book of Memories and Homecoming which has better reviews.** Oh, alright.
Honestly though, I didn't hate this game. It's actually kinda fun, dispite it's flaws. The Open-world is quite detailed, and it has a lot of neat stuff about it.

This game also has a really excellent comic unlike other Silent Hill comics which are hot, steaming garbage. It's also implied that the monsters may be Anne's moreso than Murphy's, particularly the doll and their increased aggression towards Murphy may more be related to Anne's hate for him. It's actually pretty cool in my opinion.

Jackie Kog. well the black hole is Murphy's personal monster so is the police car

That actually sounds pretty valid. Even the fact that they attack you without actually doing it themselves, could represent Anne being passive-aggression toward him in the beginning

I had this cool idea for a Silent Hill game. Basically, the weapons are based around the personality of the character. Say if it’s a hitman like Jack Stanton from the comics, the weapons would be hitman themed like suppressed pistols, sniper rifles, pocket pistols, flashy guns, etc. It would be a cool idea as Silent Hill is a manifestation of guilt and the weapons should also reflect that.

I think it's a combination of his well-done videos with the longevity of the Silent Hill fans. I've been a fan since I played my first on ps2 and there's still so many really active fans! Check out the community forums for your SH fix. It's so cool how people are still finding things out.

About the mistery of the town and why we dont know why the town is the way it is…we actually do, that is not open to interpretation in silent hill 2 you find a book that literally explains that the lake was worshiped by native americans and that the european settlemen basically killed them off corrupting the native american deity or something like that anyway aparently alexa also gave that deity powers over the town to project the demons in tormented souls.
