- I feel the spirit of my Father in this place. This State Built a Gravel Cycling and Camping Network on a Peninsula | Summer Road Trip Experience. Dramatic, rocky coastline, quaint fishing villages and a night sky where the Milkyway feels like you could reach out and grab it, a place that's ripe for a camping and gravel cycling trip, at the peak of coastal summer in Maine. We packed all our camping gear, stocked the cooler for a week of fireside meals, oh and of course some coffee and swimsuits. We're heading to the quiet side of Acadia National Park. It's an hour further than Mount Desert Island attractions and the overcrowded streets of Bar Harbor. No, its free of all that and even though it's the newest addition (2018) to the National Park, it feels like it was forgotten by the brochures and social media hit lists many years ago. It's called the Schoodic Peninsula and they've built a gravel cyclists dream scenario. Perched up on a hill smack dab in the center is the Schoodic Woods Campground, the quietest and calmest place we've ever camped. Now other than jutting out into the vast azure waters of the Atlantic Ocean, what makes this place truly special is that they've built a gravel bike specific network that spans from the campground and branches off to many quaint lobster fishing villages and remarkable coastal scenery. It's something out of a dream. When I left this place to return home, I felt a slight sense of sadness, a guttural sense of loss. I realized that's what happens when you have to leave anything that you fall in love with. I felt the spirit of my childhood growing up on the ocean, while being raised by a new England Lobster Fisherman myself and, with my dad no longer alive, the emotional tether was tied tightly to my heart. I really hope you enjoy the first part of this multi episode of our Maine trip. I'm particularly proud of the editing style and cinematography using just a GoPro camera. Please hit the like and subscribe if you enjoy our channel, that little 'thumbs up" from you really helps the channel grow.

You did a great job capturing the highlights of Schoodic Point. One of our favorite places in New England.
Thank you! One of our favorites too for sure.
As I have just retired I long for my youth to relive my days growing up in New England. Thanks for rekindling that fire that I can share with my grandchildren. Great Vid.
Keep that fire stoked! Our inner child is always there waiting to play freely. Thank you for that comment. It echoed of beautiful nostalgia.
What a great area so peaceful and beautiful. Thanks very much for sharing
Thank you for watching and commenting. It was very hard to leave and I felt like a week wasn't long enough there.
Just watched your video while eating breakfast in wet and dull Staffordshire, England. Absolutely beautiful and I feel so privileged to have shared your wonderful experience with you guys. I echo the other comments of feeling the relaxed and happy vibe. What an awesome place to camp and cycle. Thank you for giving me a sea fix as we live in the most land locked county in England! I can relate to the sadness you feel when you leave somewhere you love. Two weeks ago my husband and I cycled seventy miles around three lochs in Scotland. It was epic with stunning views and big climbs in all weathers. I actually thought of you and the effort it takes to make a video while riding tough terrain and really appreciate your hard work and dedication in bringing these beautiful videos for us to share. We would love to visit there one day, now added to the list! So glad you both had such a lovely time together ☺
I'm so happy that our simple video was able to conjure up such beautiful thoughts and get you that sea fix. Being so connected to the ocean in my childhood, I know how strong that craving can be. Your recent ride sounds awesome and quite adventurous by the sound of it. It's amazing the places the mind can go within its own landscape while physically travelling through another. I feel privileged that our videos were a small part of your thought-scape while you were on your adventure. How far from the ocean is Straffordshire? And please come visit new england, where your historical settlers once thought it worthy to set roots and call home. Let us know if and when you do. Thank you so much for your comment. I read it over coffee this morning and it set a lovely tone to my day. ☕🙏
@@ThatMountainMoment thank you for your lovely words. We would love to visit New England one day and if we ever did will certainly come and say hello. We are about two hours from a beach. We love Cornwall for their beaches but it’s a very popular county in the summer months. We do have beautiful coastline but Schoodic looks amazing!
Thank you so much to our subscribers. I'm grateful for all of you. This video is a more cinematic vibe to showcase the full experience of visiting this special place. There's still plenty of cycling but we wanted to capture more for you on this one. This is episode 1 of 2 in this mini series. I'm really proud of the footage, all filmed on a simple gopro and hope you enjoy it as much as I did making it.
Much Love and Adventure,
TMM
I love your Videos they inspier me to get out on my bike. Thank you
I@@TheMaineoutdoorswe love hearing that and is the maine😉 reason we enjoy making these videos. Thank you so much for taking time to watch.🙏
Wow. You definitely should be absolutely proud of this footage. Incredible shots, editing and colour grading (?). The ocean is my happy place and a good salad is of of my favourite things.
Now I want to go visit this peninsula in Maine and ride those trails and loops. Reminds me a bit of the coast and landscapes in the transkei and the hole in the wall area here.
Hope you both enjoy your weekend. Thanks for another wonderful video!
Thank you that means a lot to me that you appreciated in such detail. All of our videos are shot entirely on an older GoPro and I'm always shocked at how such a little camera can capture such great shots after some time spent color grading. The Schoodic Peninsula is a place that left a void in my heart once it was in our rear-view mirror heading home. For a week after i felt as if I lost a close friend. It's fascinating how a simple landscape can grab our hearts so tightly and feel like heart break when we must leave them. I have the same feeling of the mountains that we call home. The way you speak of where you live has convinced me that it's a place we must see in our lifetime. Have a beautiful weekend!
Thanks! I'm headed there in a few weeks and your video helped me plan activities for me and my sons.
Oh awesome! Schoodic Woods is the name of the campground. Blackwood campground was very busy. If you want to sleep and relax in peace at the end of the day, schoodic makes a great home base for that and then day trip to the main part of Mount Desert Island for the hotspots in the brochures which are definately worth seeing. If you hit those hotspots on midweek days, you'll avoid a lot of crowds. Our next video is all filmed on Mount Desert Island using the carriage road network they built to get from point to point. by using the bikes instead of cars made it so much more fun. An ebike rental would honestly be the way to see everything. I think there was a rental place for E-bikes. What they did with the carriage roads is so well executed and very unique. You'll love the time there with your family. Excited to here what you think.
Oh man! And a super thanks! I appreciate that. Its going towards my "new camera fund." So awesome.
@@ThatMountainMoment Thanks for the additional info! e-bikes in Acadia sound great. I grew up in Maine (in Detroit over between Pittsfield & Newport) but I don't know that section of coast very well.
@paulpieman we already want to go back. I think you'll find it to be worth the trip. Bar Harbor seemed like the tourist town but still looked fun for a day. Winter Harbor is the main town right near the campground. Felt local with just the right amount of offerings.
A masterclass of a video, a totally immersive experience, it pulls you in wanting to be there. Your comments in the video “I love you, you look cute” was said with 100% sincerity, whoa so fresh and genuine to hear and see. The music during the video connected with the flow and feel of the surroundings thank you, what a great way to share your amazing land and seascape bursting with the beauty of nature.
Man, if you're not a descriptive writer or a song writer, you should be ha ha. You word things so beautifully. I'm really glad you liked the music. I spent many hours going through songs to find them, especially the first song, which is one of my favorite parts of editing as music is such an important part of my life. My editing flow actually starts with a song I connect with and then I build the video around the song. I try to find music that reflects how I was feeling at that point in time. Man, I really appreciate you picking up on that vibe.
@@ThatMountainMoment good morning hey man thanks a bunch for your kind words. I luv music, the 1st song was amazing it set the scene and was a superb choice. I’m neither a writer or song writer but someone who has done many things. You’re the 1st channel I’ve added comments to that moves and inspires me. I’m a guy who’s been cycling from about 8 and now an old timer of 60 😀 and loves the outdoors, especially being Scottish. I use social media very little but hang loose on RUclips enjoying the cycling scene. Keep up the great work.
Great vid.. you need to remind folks to hit the like button. So many veiws... I'm sure peple are just forgetting! Great place I'm going to plan on visiting next year for sure.
I really do need to be better at that for sure.
I never get tired looking at the Ocean.. 🌊 Love Maine 😎.. 🚴♂️
Same here! And listening to the ocean is intoxicating.
Wow! You two are on a roll with incredible videos. This was your best to date. It drew me in and I was mesmerized from the first scene. Loved seeing the entire experience. Please do more of this style. Seems like other subscribers feel as I do. Such wonderful comments I'm seeing.❤
I'm so excited that people like this style. It's my favorite thing to create. I love allowing the scenery to be the focal point within the context of the ride or adventure. I feel It balances out the actual cycling footage with still frames and slow motion sequences which is all the times we stop to "smell the roses" during a ride. I'm so happy.
Wonderful, well done video! I am looking forward to part 2. Thanks to both of you!
Thank you! Currently working on part 2 as we speak. I'm excited to release it next week!
I am from Maine. Lived and worked in Bar Harbor for 4 summers 1987-1991. Spent a ton of time hiking and biking in Acadia. Fond memories indeed.
That was probably a cool era to be there. I see your screen name mentions Oregon which I've always felt is the Maine of the PNW.
That looks like so much fun. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for taking the time to always tune in.
@@ThatMountainMoment literally my favorite channel on RUclips.
Oh wow, that's a huge compliment. Thank you so much!
Beautiful. Thank you for the inspiration.
Awe, so glad you enjoyed it. Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment. Hope you had a wonderful day?
It feels like you had the whole park to yourselves. Really nice day for it!
We basically did have it to ourselves. We kept saying how wierd it was that no one was there. It was midweek so it makes sense that we missed the weekend rush but the park ranger said Schoodic is always the quiet part of the park. Next episode we go to the busier side but it was still very quiet.
The Maine dept of tourism should hire you to do a promo video! Incredible filming! Peace, MD
I would love to do that!
What a peaceful gorgeous video! Thanks!
I'm so glad you enjoyed the peaceful vibes. It's by far my favorite to make. Thank YOU!
Schoodic is a top 5 favorite spot in my life. Spent four years in Orono. Every chance we could, we went to Schoodic. The biking is amazing.
It might be my favorite place I've been to and I used to travel the country for my career. It's hard to put into words as you know. We also loved winter Harbor and the little towns around the peninsula.
@@ThatMountainMoment you are spot on about avoiding the chaos of Bar Harbor. It feels Iike a whole different world.
@davidhale9672 very different
Thank you for sharing a peaceful spot with us.
My pleasure! So glad you enjoyed it. Thank YOU for watching and commenting.
Your best work!
Oh man that means a lot! I was really happy with it so I'm glad you and others enjoyed it.
Lovely video and wonderful views. Amazing places. Thanks for sharing!
Thank YOU for watching and commenting. Have you been to the Maine Coast?
@@ThatMountainMoment I've been to Maine a couple of years ago in autumn driving up from Boston to Bar Harbour along the cost. Also stayed in Acadia National Park for day hike/walik. But just in a rental car and without any bike... From Europe, the trip is quite far, but the coast is so beautiful and your video inspiring: with those trails I have added it to my list again.
Schoodic Peninsula would be a very different experience for you compared to the area around Mount Desert Island. Hope to visit Europe again in the future. Been 10 years since we did. I love europe.
@@ThatMountainMoment There are just so many beautiful places to visit and so little time... ;-) Hope you get the chance to come to Europe again.
@MichaelJ_ isn't that the truth!
Another amazing video, been going to MDI for 30 years, love downeast Maine! Been a long time since we’ve ventured over to the other side of the peninsula, you reminded us we need to venture more!
We definately enjoyed MDI too but there was something so different and secluded feeling about Schoodic. When's the last time you went over to that side? Winter Harbor was such a quaint town.
Wow that looks like a really relaxing holiday :)
It was so peaceful. I love landscapes where wilderness meets the ocean. There's something very humbling about it. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment.
This looks awesome! I'm headed up to Mount Desert Island area for the first time with my family this week and will head up to the Schoodic Peninsula if I get a chance while I'm up there! Also, the shot at @7:42 reveals you're due for some new bar tape asap 😄
Ha ha, bar tape is needed for sure! We are posting our Mount Desert Island video this evening at 7pm. We explore all the awesome carriage roads that the park turned into a massive gravel bike network. Thanks for commenting and watching. Hope you have a blast up there! Highly recommend seeing the park by bike or e-bike which are available at local rental shops in the area of Bar Harbor.
Looks like you had a wonderful time. Thanks for sharing.
It may be my favorite place I've ever visited. Thank you for commenting and watching. Have you ever been to coastal Maine?
@@ThatMountainMoment We drove all over Northern New England on our honeymoon. From nude sunbathing at The Cape's National Seashore to visiting Quechee Gorge, we stayed at my family's cottage on Lake Winnipesaukee, saw mucho moose at Moose Alley and swam at Garfield Falls, both near Pittsburg NH, lunched at a lobstah shack between Bar Harbor and the view from Cadillac Mountain and swam in 54F at Acadia National Park's beach. Coastal is great but I'm a woods & mountains guy at heart and a big wooden covered bridges fan. I visited over 120 WCBs in 2 years just in New England about 15 years ago.
Looking forward to part 2 🚴♂🚴♀
Well that's an awesome trip! New England has a romance to it that I've not found elsewhere so it's perfect for a honeymoon. The cape is gorgeous, I grew up in Sandwich playing in the salt marshes. Pittsburg feels like Alaska to me. Just pristine wilderness and very little infrastructure, which is perfect. Oh yeah, you give me a covered bridge to look at in rural new england and my heart cracks open. I feel like I'm in a storybook dream every time I see one ha ha.
@@ThatMountainMoment I caught the Green River video recently and commented on it. Awesome area.
@mowglivapes7887 you said you stayed in a sweat lodge near there if I remember correctly ha ha.
What a great video 🎉 Thanks for sharing 👍🏽 We have a site in Blackwoods next week but I wish I would’ve booked some days in Scoodic after watching this 😅
We stayed at Blackwoods as well which is a great location for seeing the main part of the park. Our next video is that entire area by bike using all the carriage roads to see the sights. I'm glad we did both places but Schoodic felt like it was all to ourselves and so relaxing. The stargazing at Schoodic was tops!
Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment. When do you go to Acadia
Crossing that bridge at around the 15 minute mark. Looking down it was some if nit thr clearest water I have seen in New England. Amazing
Yes! While we were visiting we kept saying how different the water was in that part of the Atlantic compared to more south in new england. I couldnt stop staring at it.
We just biked this last week! Amazing
Oh awesome! It's a special place for sure.
Good holiday!🙌
It was a place that was very hard to leave. Definately going back there someday. Episode 2 of that area gets more into the rest of Acadia National Park and tons of awesome riding\scenery. Thanks!
Beautiful video! We are heading up next month. If you recall, what camp site did you have? We have a tear drop and want to make sure we have room. We did the Carriage Roads prior to Covid when we stayed in bar Harbor. They are fantastic. Happy travelling!
I believe we were site 12 but honestly every site was really nice.
I would even recommend making Schoodic your home base and then just day trip an hour to the Mount Desert Island area. Blackwoods Campground was very busy and you have loads of cars starting up at 4am to catch the Cadillac Mountain Sunrise which we skipped and simply watched from the peace and quiet of Schoodic.
@@ThatMountainMoment thank you! We are actually just going to Schoodic for a week. Have a reserved site at the campground. 🥰
@ivonemedeiros9268 oh that's going to be so relaxing.
Rode up the mountain to Eagle Lake. It was a good climb.
Yes, and that section was really beautiful. We get into the carriage roads on the next episode so places like eagle lake, jordan pond, etc.
Do they have some kind of” Emmy” for amateur videos? If they do, you should enter it. The shots of the breaking waves were impressive. It’s a video to watch more than once
No there is no Emmy for that ha ha but I don't think I'd win if there was. For a gopro I was shocked by how well it captured the ocean with the super wide angle it has.
Thought I'd found my people, great camera footage, excellent destinations & y'all took your gravel bikes... Then you rode in flipflops, neanderthals! 😂
Ha ha. Sometimes ya gotta go casual. Most rides are done in flats and mtb shoes but sandals just feel right at times. Free The Toes!
This is so awesome. Do you have a recommended route, like a GPS track you can share?
Oh yes I do. Let me dig into my archives tonight. Stay tuned...
Nice job.
Oh thanks man!
That water can be soooo cold!
It was oddly warm that week for some reason. We kept wondering why but the mountain river in our town is really pretty cold year round so maybe we built up a tolerance over the years? It was still no bath water but quite tolerable.
Hey, do you ever hike any cool hikes around NH, VT?
Oh definately! we live in Lincoln,NH which is in the heart of all the White Mountain Hiking, We trail run and hike. I have made a handful of those videos and have a playlist. We have a lot of biking because it seems to be most popular with our subscribers but I honestly enjoy just sharing the beauty of our region through any type of adventure, in any season. Thanks for inquiring! Here's the links to our hiking\trail running playlists mostly in the White Mountains but also some desert stuff from Arizona. The trail running still has quite a bit of hiking footage.

Sweet couple.
Awe thanks. 🙏
What's that song around the 10 minute mark? Perfect for the video
The song is Hello Good Morning by Graham Colton. I like his vibe for sure.
WOW X10 beautiful spot the best video to date
The wife saw this video and has already started planning our trip
When did you go and was that the best time to go.
That's so cool! You will love it this was mid June. Perfect climate that time of year up there. I would highly recommend visiting mid week if possible. Schoodic Peninsula is very quiet no matter when because its an hour north of the Maine park area on Mount Desert Island. Mount Desert and Bar Harbor were quite busy even midweek but we only did a night there just to see the main park. Winter Harbor, the town near Schoodic campground was quaint and non touristy but bar Harbor, though gorgeous was very tourist town vibes. All worth seeing but we were happy with our decision to stray away from the busy area and spend most of our time just riding around schoodic and playing like kids in the coves and appreciating the peace and quiet. I loved the stargazing and hearing the distant rumble of the fishing boats leaving the docks in the morning. Our next video will show the main park area by bike so you'll get a taste of both. The carriage roads that they built into a gravel bike network there as well is very large. We rode almost 50 miles on the day we were there and still hadn't covered all of the roads. Think of MDI as a much larger and more visited version of schoodic. Schoodic feels intimate and more manageable to navigate to points of interest and little towns. MDI has all the well known hot spots that hard incredible and dramatic for sure. We spent a week there and still need to go back to see all of it. Hope that helps a bit. Feel free to ask more questions.
Hi Steve, I had my trips mixed up from another Maine trip. This video was filmed last year in late summer around September. Nikki just reminded me that I got the dates mixed up from a different trip ha ha. Just wanted to make sure I got you the right info and yes it was still the perfect time to go weather wise. Thanks again. Can't wait to hear what you think!
@@ThatMountainMoment we had talked about Maine in the past but your videos sealed the deal
How were the bugs that time of year
They were basically non existent. Never needed bug spray
@@ThatMountainMoment in 2010 as I was finishing the AT in late summer the black Flys were crazy
I'll bet it's all about location and timing thanks again for taking us along with you I'm telling my friends about your chanel
Five seconds into the video, I thought “Schoodic peninsula”. My wife and I did part of it in May 2023
So intimately beautiful right?
Forgot your helmets and flip flops! Asking for trouble.
Agreed, it was very impromptu ride. Normally we wear helmets. But I do love riding in sandals ha ha.
Shhhhhh, You're not suppose to post videos of places like these. O.o
Beautiful video btw. 🥰
Ha ha! I normally think that but it seems like a place that no matter how much it's mentioned it's just not as appealing to modt as the big attraction area of Acadia. I think the lack of creature comforts and amenities invites only the people searching for the same peace and quiet. I couldn't believe how few people were there during peak summer considering how crazy busy Acadia and Bar Harbor were. It was like warping to another realm on the same day. Thanks for watching, hope you had a great week man!
