Hello Tony, a great video. I was born and raised in Sunderland. Many memories of the pubs and clubs, my Uncle worked at Vaux breweries for many years. I remember coming home on leave from the Merchant Navy and did a tour of Vaux breweries and got to drink a few beers afterwards in the Tap room. I miss the beer and the culture of the North East, six pints and you wanted to take on everybody! Aah, those were the days, have lived overseas for the last 40 years, good memories. Thanks for the video!
Tony your walks are just the best. happy memories of my youth in the late 70s and early 80s. Love my hometown, but i do not recognize much now after so many decades away. Was there in 2014 and I got lost, had ask people for directions and it was difficult to understand some and they treated me like a poor tourist.
Me and my Brother dressed like Duran Duran in the late 80's went to Genevieve only to find a heavy metal group playing so we left before we got a slap, foolishly instead of heading back across the bridge we ventured towards Roker Avenue and found Dixons, after about 40 minutes we kind of realised we were going to get jumped by a group of lads who were clearly out for a fight. Luckily for us we just happened to get talking to a group of 4 other lads who were from Houghton (we were from Lumley) they were also a bit worried and saw we were in the same boat and suggested we all leave together. We made it out with nothing more then shouts and threats of a hiding if we ever came back, ended up in Bentleys and had a great night, all be it an expensive one.
the blue monkey was around 99 to 2001 ish, i worked in the shell garage on chester road night shift, had many a person, ask where it was from out of town, it was not my scene, but it was closed and re opened and shut again i think, i could be wrong
