I watched all your videos years ago and just ran across this video. So glad to see you back even though this video is 4 + years old. I really hope you continue to make videos!
Id imagine knox gelatin is a very refined version of hide glue? Does it act exactly like hide glue when applying sinew to a bow? Im preparing to make my first sinew bow after a lot of research.
Thank for the great video. I live in the southwest and would love to make a bow out of Juniper. Do you know where I can purchase or harvest a stave? Thanks again.
Cool video. I was wondering, did you do videos of harvesting, splitting, shaping, laying out, and floor tillering the bow? I was curious. Thanks. I'm going to watch the rest of your backing videos. I'm sure I'll subscribe too.
Yes it did! I've been locked out of my account here shortly after making this video series. Now that I'm back, I'll have to make a final video (with much improved camera gear) showing the finished bow. I've been shooting it for years now. Love this one!
Yowzaa!! I go a bit heavier than that. Just goes to show that there aren't hard and fast rules. I am though really thorough in prepping the back and sizing: Warming the bow and starting with a really thin mixture, sometimes with a drop or two of dish soap so the first couple of sizing washes can soak in better. With something like osage or black locust, I'll go as far as almost "scribing" the back with a fine toothed saw blade kind of like the core and horn would be matched on a horn bow. I also wrap the sinew tightly after backing with gauze to keep concave areas from lifting and making the back nice and smooth. Great video by the way.
It's truly fantastic to see you back in action Paleo. You look in great shape and another 1st class video.

I've never heard of using gelatin as hide glue.

💫🧸💫🙂👍
I like 1 part hide glue to 5 parts water
I actually ended up using 6 packets to roughly 2.5 cups of water. I've never actually measured it out.
