Looking good! Good decision to paint the piers. Such things are not the most important, but they do matter. Having a space that looks good has a positive effect on one's attitude and state of mind.
Hi Dave, thank you. I am glad I painted them too now and think they look much nicer. Got to agree that a comfortable nice space makes a lot of difference. Hope to spend a lot of time in here so it needs to look good
Looking brilliant Glenn, you must be pleased you’ve got your roof rolling mate, I remember how happy I was😀 It’s going to be awesome Glenn, almost there! really pleased for you mate👍 Clear skies
Cheers Simon. So nice to have that on and rolling. Just in time too as rain forecast tomorrow. I think I will have to pinch myself once its done and I have it to use. Look forward to some fun imaging nights mate
Looking good, weather has been good up here but cloudy every night. Ive managed to adjust my roof now to a single sheet of tubular plastic sheeting and changed the design so it now missed the scope. We all learn as we build and i never use designs, just whats in my head and adjust as i go… love it !
Well done on the roof. I am the same where it is all in my head and I just build using a mixture of common sense and past experience. I tried plans once and I went through a ream of paper and about a dozen pencils before I gave up. I find it easier to just get stuck in and adjust as you go if it doesn't work or you see a better way.
Great work Glenn , very nicely built , youll soon be able to get all your equipment installed and set up and be taking more of those fantastic images mate
Once in the trade, if gloss was only available but wanted mat or satin, we would tip the varnish of the top of the paint, stir the rest of the paint up. Then if we wanted satin not mat we would slowly add the varnish till we thought enough was added. So on that note maybe the paint wasn't stired enough in the first place. (Dark colours lay heavy at the bottom. So glossy first flat later if not enough stiring done. Depends on how long stood on shop shelf. Hope thats helpfull for a future task. On a positive side, when your using the obs it will be dark anyway. 😁 Build looking good, well done. Clear sky's to you.
Hi Arnstein, I will be going into more details on the roof design and construction in the next video but If you need any info before please let me know.
I love watching this extremely impressive project gradually take shape. The quality of your planning, work and attention to detail is truly remarkable. Great work Glenn!
Thank you for the great comments, i really appreciate the support. I am very happy with how it is turning out and should hopefully share a finished video of it soon.
Looks fantastic! Lots of hard work that will pay off beautifully. Someday perhaps I’ll do one-if I do I’ll definitely be referencing these videos for ideas!
Hi Chris and thank you. Its been a huge project but I am very happy with how it is turning out. Thank you for the kind comment and good luck if you do build one. I can say they are well worth the effort
Great to watch the progress of this beautiful obsy Glenn, great work again ! Where are the wheels rolling on Glenn and are it metal wheels ? maybe I missed it in previous episodes ?
Thank you Siegfried and glad you are enjoying the project. I will be detailing all the rolling gear but on one side I have metal V groove wheels on a V track guiding the roof and on the other I have flat hard rubber wheels rolling on a flat steel bar.
It's gonna look a treat when done, just a quick question, will you have enough standing room in the scope area? From the camera angles head height looks tight.
Thank you Nik, I am super happy with it. It's fine for me but I am only 5' 9" and only seem to grow outwards now days lol. With the roof shut I have a few inches clear fully upright.
I missed a couple of your videos for some reason but blimey flip it's looking lovely isn't it! 😘 Do you guys keep the observation bit cooler or is it best to keep warm?
Hi Basil and thanks for watching. You'll have to catch up lol. It is coming along great and almost there now. Best to keep it close to the outside temps especially re heat so the scopes are ready to use.
Glenn, great obsy build! I am in the middle of a 8'x8' single pier obsy in my backyard in Berkeley California, bottle 7. What kind of work suit or coveralls your wearing? I like the look of those.
Hi and thank you. Good luck with your build, have you got much to do? The overalls have been good for the job especially on hotter days. Amazon sell lots of different types like these amzn.to/3XueOJN Wish you luck with your build and clear skies
@@Astrobloke Thanks for the link. Bortle 7 not bottle! I have a LOT to do still. I am only pouring the floor foundation piers now. Once those are done I will pour the pier then begin building construction. Much to decide, all bespoke, no plans but I've built enough that I am not worried about that. The roof will be a challenge!! Great job to you again, what a great space you created for yourself. Congratulations.
Are the wheels for the roof in any sort of channel, or do they just roll across the rails? What is you positive lock system to keep the roof from taking to the air in gale force winds?
Hi Robert. I will go into details on next video but one side is guided with V groove wheels on V track and the other side Flat rubber wheels on flat steel bar to allow for any alignment changes. I will be adding some bars that slide over each other when the roof is closed so it cannot lift, the motor I am installing locks the roof in position from opening or closing by itself. I will also include some tie downs in the event there is any extreme weather.
Hi Glen, can you share links on your casters / wheels and tracks for your rolling roof? I’m in processes of building mine, and can’t decide on what’s best to go for. Am I right to think you have V-groove on one side and regular wheels on the other? If so how do you make sure they end up the same height? Thanks
This was the motor I bought amzn.to/3IEKC8e The V wheels amzn.to/3BTygp9 The plain wheels were from eBay www.ebay.co.uk/itm/154734410724 V Track I already had so I do not have a link but you can also use Angle iron if you find it hard to source any. The plain wheels Are running on a flat metal bar 3mm thick 40mm wide From the Metal Store.co.uk The wheels were basically the same height but the v track means one side is about 10mm higher. My roof is quite wide and the height difference does not show or effect any rolling.
Thank goodness for dads. Great job!
Absolutely, he has been a rock and helped me so much
Totally amazing build Glenn, going to be a 5 star Observatory finished
