My theory is the ad is awkward and surreal on purpose to target adults and teens whose lives are currently dominated by overwhelming social anxiety, awkwardness, and isolation. Think of people from you life who might could watch that and feel "related to" or people without the experience to sense what's wrong with, e.g., the strange pauses and technological dependency depicted in the rooftop date scene.
Or the whole thing is a meme to get publicity and exposure to break even from influencers buying it to shit on it, idk.

AI isn't causing an issue, it's filling a role where an issue already exists. Dating apps, social media, etc, have already destroyed our society and how we create relationships. It's no longer enough to just have a job and a car and maybe a home, you got to have a million other things. You need the perfect vibes, and the perfect personality, and a frictionless relationship, because one speed bump and the other person will leave cause they can just find more offers on social media. That's a sad fact of reality. And yeah, we need to adapt to these changes but it's not AI that is causing this, it's people. It's hard as hell to find friends now that stick around. Community doesn't exist anymore. We're already down this slope, AI is just there filling a hole to a problem that can't be fixed without forcing people into situations they don't like for life.

AI "products" will become a whole lot more dystopian once the next-gen AI hardware finally becomes commercially available. Analog AI runs many times faster at a fraction of the cost and since it's async, it can actually model a human brain in real time instead of slowly calculating probabilities on a clock cycle as current-gen AI does. I remember Replika becoming a big deal for awhile. I skulked around in the groups for awhile out of a morbid curiosity. When you chat with AI, it's going to basically spit back what you want to hear. You're essentially talking to yourself. I saw people taking it way too far. Some had paid subscriptions for multiple Replikas. People were spending hundreds on this and they were talking pictures of themselves in public with them,, with family, they were getting "married" and they were "adopting children" with digital baby dolls that would cry and stuff and people were sharing selfies standing next to them. They were buying VR to interact with them and their "children" would grow up and then they were chatting with a Replika that looked like a teenager, grown adults not just men women too.
100% agree this was not normal and super not okay. People who are struggling to make connections and I understand how lonely people can feel. A part of me wants to say that this really was harmless but when the technology would break, which happened often apparently, people would be having panic attacks over it in chat. It absolutely was NOT healthy.

Right. It's like with pets what you're really buying is legal acknowledgement of your ownership from those of us who follow laws and/or reciprocal assumptions of personal property rights. You simply can't "buy" a fulfilling personal relationship with another living being, it has to be cultivated over time through shared struggles and positive experiences - ones that both parties CHOOSE to think of as having be shared together. @@GrimGatsby You're simplifying this. I didnt dismiss any criticism or points against what he said. I think that what you are doing is internet tribalism: going around on his comment section calling him a corporate shill when the discussion is much more nuanced than that. Wether I agree or disagree with him on some points, calling him a corporate shill based on his opinion on an initiative IS EXACTLY what you're accusing me of doing. Thor isnt against consumers that wouldnt make any sense based on litterally everything he has made in the past. You're painting the initiative as if it was 100% good but if Thor was right on anything in those videos was that the initiative failed to represent devs and the way it was communicated was sensacionalist. So there are problems with the initiative's wording if anything else. And we could still keep arguing about it for hours like many have done and I dont want to do that. The point of what Im saying is that coming to an unrelated video's comment section to call someone a CORPORATE SHILL on other people's unrelated comments is sad and its blatantly false and a simplified premise

The point of exposure therapy is very true. I used to have horrendous social anxiety, what I did to hep deal with that was read a self help book, and start striking up conversations with shop workers when I'm paying for stuff. It's been very helpful and although I still have anxiety issues, people have actually started describing me as chatty haha.
Also pro tip, I find the best conversation opener so far when talking to shop staff is a simple "So how's your day going?" some people clearly don't want to talk, and others very much want an excuse to tell someone about their day. Plus is more open ended than the traditional "have you been busy?". (This is in the UK for context)

Most of the kids at school were disappointed that their 20 days tamagotchi could die in that time but some kids simply cried, like it was a real pet, teachers had to recomfort multiple kids after lunch.

The idea that a computer and line of code is unbiased, and can solve all of our problems is just dumb. The root of a computer's biggest flaw is that it was made by a person and used by people. I'm in college right now, and I struggle a lot with taking notes. I got ADD pretty bad, and sometimes will get distracted and miss sections the lecturer says, or won't be fast enough in my note taking to get everything important. This could help with that.

If it’s aligned to talk to you like a therapist or a coach, supportive but also able to teach you, correct you, and challenge you, it could be immensely positive. You say that you don’t agree with human companionship as a product, but I know from experience that it can be immensely beneficial, and the loneliness epidemic is a problem worthy of tackling with all the technology we’ve got, but I absolutely agree that not done right it creates a lot of problems.
