1) Always pull open back cabs off the wall, the speakers breath and give a third dimension to your sound. 2) Also, using a camcorder mic is not recommended. They are notorious for compressing (badly) your signal and clipping when the decibels get a little high. 3) If your mic is not in front of the Mesa's speakers your audience hears your room sound added to the sound of the room they are listening in. So, amp away from wall + good mic - bare feet (they don't demo well - germs?) = great demo.
I've never owned a Conford, but this is my 2nd Mesa and I love 'em. I had a Dual Recto 1/2 stack for a long time, but it got to be too big for me & my small apartment, so I went on a small amp tour and ended up with this one. I mean, Mesa's have a sound all their own and with the RectoVerb you get an amp with gorgeous cleans, nice crunch, and ball-busting distortion ... plus reverb & boost. Such a winning combo IMHO.
Thanks man!! The cleans on this amp ARE really fantastic -- one of my favorite cleans yet actually. And yeah, my last amp was a 3-channel Dual Recto and the cleans weren't quite this good ... though having 3 channels was really nice. I find myself using my Fulltone OCD like the 2nd channel more and more, so that works I guess. Thanks for the comment!
It's pretty versatile... nice cleans, good drive, and searing gain -- so that's a yes. And it's got more than enough power to not only hold up against, but probably overwhelm any drummer I've ever played with -- so that's a yes too. Only problem is the weight... it ISN'T light at all. Tips the scales at about 70lbs, so casters are a lifesaver, for sure.
From what I understand, it's simply the fact that this one has spring reverb -- thus "Rectoverb." There's also a "Tremoverb" by Mesa, it has tremolo & reverb. This one is modeled after the 50-watt Single Recto and is featured on the same page on the Mesa site. The difference between this amp and the Dual/Triple rectos? Power. Single Recto = 50-watts, Dual = 100-watts, Triple = 150-watts. All three have the same/similar design, just different power ratings. Hope this helps.
I use pedals for low/mid gain stuff mainly and use the dirt side for heavier stuff. Gain - 2:00 Treble - 12:00 Mid - 11:00 Bass - 2:00 Presence - 1:00 Master - 11:00
Hey man! The tubes are standard Mesa and the settings are mostly flat as far as EQ goes. I tweaked the gain quite a bit, but the heaviest stuff has the gain cranked and the overdrive stuff was probably around 9:00. I did cut the treble in this clip because the clipping killed the first vid I did.
I moved down more out of necessity than anything else. The band I was in split and I was getting married and moving into a small, quiet apartment complex where a 100-watt half stack wouldn't exactly be appreciated. I tried a few amps in between -- Orange, Fender, Crate -- but came back to the Mesa. Had to. No replacing this sound. Anyway, If you're curious about the differences, check out the Single Recto 50's -- this is the same amp, only as a combo & w/ reverb.
Its a killer amp. I have a Rectoverb 50 Series 2 Head and Im using it with a pair of EL34 tubes (a pair of phillips miniwatts to be exact). No matter how I try other amps, only the Mesa's rectifiers have the tone i want.
If I'm not mistaken, the RectoVerb is the same circuit as the Single Recto .... only with reverb and in combo form -- so generally speaking, it should sound exactly the same. There's also a Mesa TremoVerb that has tremolo & reverb built in.
Couldn't tell you exactly, but I did have a Nomad 45 for awhile there. (The Nomads were the predecessors to the F-series amps, if I remember my Mesa history correctly) The Nomad, compared to the Recto, didn't have as much gain and was a bit thinner sounding -- but that's likely a result of the design. This recto runs 6L6s and sits in an oversize cab, the Nomad was noticably smaller and ran EL84's, which gave it pronounced mids and made it a bit more Marshally. Sold the Nomad for a Vox AC15H1TV.
yeah I figured that... i was just imagining getting one of the solo heads and trying it on a 4x12 cabinet, i know a rectoverb could potentially kill one 12, but I wonder if it could handle 4. Thanks for your opinion man, the vid's sound great and I look forward to hearing more. rock on
I got the trio now. Mesa (rect-o-verb) Marshall JCM2000 (DSL100MLB 2009) and Peavey 5150 (face and bias mod.) II can die relatively happy now...still love a Cobra and an Invader though.
cool riff at 2:49, thanks for posting this review, i was deciding between a marshall half stack and this. going with this. just seems like just an overall better amp for what i want to do.
nice action on that studio. that's almost as low as i set my Jackson SLSMG and my two SG's. the one SG has the 490 neck and i put a BareKnuckle Miracle Man in the bridge (that's my goth with the ebony board) and the other i swapped the 490's out for a 496r/500T with gold screw pole pieces and standard nickel poles.the SLSMG has ebony board and EMG81/85 though im going to put an 85 in the bridge and a 60A in the neck and add a second 9 volt to the circuit. I'ma swap caps in them all.
Off the top of my head?? Gain - 12:00 Treble - 2:00 Mid - 11:00 Bass - 3:00 Presence - 12:00 Master - depends Those are my settings for home jamming. When playing live I usually crank the mids to 1:00 or maybe a bit more... and back down the bass a bit too.
Mine does surprisingly well at lower volumes actually. I never had a problem with it in my apartment..... but I bought a house now and can play at whatever volume I want.
It has a good amount of bass I'd say, but comparing it to the 4x12 is tough, simply because you're talking about 4 12's as opposed to just one. A lot of "bass" is in the feel I think. Anyway, I can't make any promises, but I'll try and record another short demo here in the near future with the PreSonus recording interface I just got and have used on my last few demos (Trotsky, Ernie & one of the Swollen Pickle vids). It's still killed by RUclips, but it's MUCH better than the cam mic audio.
I got my rectoverb Head it's a V1. I loved it but, it had been stored for awhile and needed cleaned. I retubed the pre. GT 12AX7's for V1&V3 and a vintage 7025 from an old Sunn. put a new GT PI in and HOLY CRAP. Fender cleans to recto gain! I need new power tubes but, i'm so happy with it i'm going to possibly trade off the 5150 head for another one or toward a Dual rec. I need a footswitch though if you know anyone with an extra let me know please! This really is such an all arounder...
It certainly isn't the lightest amp on the planet, but it's not that bad really -- probably 50 pounds or so. I've had a couple of 2x12 combo amps that were a nightmare to transport, but there are casters on this one, which helps a lot.
I need to open her up completely though and deoxit the circuits and D5 the connections and sockets. the retainers for the power tube both broke on me but, that's the extent of weak points, lol. you can get 2 new ones for about $250 which i'll do. through the 2x12 140 watt cab with the older and better made V30's it's just heaven. Fender on one side and articualte and harmoniclay dense 5150ish on the other...can't beat that other than an Invader or Cobra....those aren't worth the price.the rec is
Yeah, I see the same thing happening to me unfortunately lol. This baby is made for dwellings on a couple acres for sure ha. But man I love it... and I totally agree, I have no intention of splitting away from mesa, so versatile... I was thinking a fender blues deluxe down the road for another style, but never letting go of the mesa. Just to clear things up, because I know video's on youtube cannot possibly do it justice... does this thing have the low end like the dual rect in channel 2?
Well, this is a Series I Rectoverb, which they don't make anymore -- let alone sell new. I'm not up to date on the current prices, but I'd expect to pay around $1,100 for a Series II Rectoverb, give or take a hundred bucks.
@crxshdxmmy for sure! It's a 50 watt with external jacks. You can get this in head form too which is what i'm picking up tomorrow. I play most amps at 50 watts up until now. i have 5150's and XXX's which are 120 watt. great for metal with the added headroom but, this is going to be my "everything" amp. I just hope the guys comes through tomorrow or i'll go all emo and i hate those turds..
hmmm, I might have to make the same trade and take the cash difference lol. My only concern is if channel two matches up, 50 watt vs 100watt, i'm paranoid the sound and break up may be different. I know the 3 channel has one more mode also, "raw"... but is it significant? I have no idea... I never really use channel three but once I get some pedals that will change... decisions. decisions... reverb pedal, or sell and reinvest lol nicer cleans are very tempting as well...
Nope. There are 6L6's in this RoV. Most of what I played in this video, as far as I know, is mostly noodling. Wish I could help you, but I was just messing around with stuff that I've come up with really.
I used to play in a touring heavy band. I played only through triple recs. I am older now and mostly out of the bigger stages. I want that same sound for the occasional club gig though. Can this little amp run a standard 4x12 cab? or 2x12 extension cab? Thanks for posting the demo:)
Do you play live with it much? Are you willing to share what settings you like on the dirty channel? I just picked one up a few days ago and I'm heading to the studio tonight. Just trying to get some pointers wherever I can.
Hey i'm back... was this too loud for your apartment?? I know it can hang with a drum set... My dual rectifier half stack is freakin rediculous, thinking about trading, selling, or taking my chancing with an attenuator...
1) Always pull open back cabs off the wall, the speakers breath and give a third dimension to your sound.
2) Also, using a camcorder mic is not recommended. They are notorious for compressing (badly) your signal and clipping when the decibels get a little high.

I wouldn't hesitate to play any of that stuff with this amp. It's incredibly versatile.

hahaha man i just absolutely love how clean and innocent this amp sounds and then "lets switch over to the dirty channel.." pure gain.
I use pedals for low/mid gain stuff mainly and use the dirt side for heavier stuff.
Gain - 2:00
Treble - 12:00
Mid - 11:00
Bass - 2:00
Presence - 1:00
Master - 11:00

@FenderFridays As I recall - E, C#m7, B, A
Try B & A as open major variants at the 7th and 5th frets.

you won't regret it man, the rectoverb is one of the most underrated mesa amps.
yeah I figured that... i was just imagining getting one of the solo heads and trying it on a 4x12 cabinet, i know a rectoverb could potentially kill one 12, but I wonder if it could handle 4. Thanks for your opinion man, the vid's sound great and I look forward to hearing more. rock on

I agree. This thing is a LOT easier to haul than my old Dual Recto 1/2 Stack -- and (arguably) sounds a better too.
It's a Gibson Les Paul Studio w/ the stock Gibson pickups -- 490R and 498T.
If it's in decent shape and doesn't have any problems -- YES.
Sheesh!! Didn't realize this beast was so heavy.
nice action on that studio. that's almost as low as i set my Jackson SLSMG and my two SG's. the one SG has the 490 neck and i put a BareKnuckle Miracle Man in the bridge (that's my goth with the ebony board) and the other i swapped the 490's out for a 496r/500T with gold screw pole pieces and standard nickel poles.the SLSMG has ebony board and EMG81/85 though im going to put an 85 in the bridge and a 60A in the neck and add a second 9 volt to the circuit. Yes. I believe that is the only difference (other than the obvious head vs. combo separation).
haha yeah, its a monster of an amp. the mesa price list also has dimensions and weight, but i was suprised when i saw how heavy it was haha.
Off the top of my head??
Gain - 12:00
Treble - 2:00
Mid - 11:00
Bass - 3:00
Presence - 12:00
Master - depends

The clean sounds really good man! i'm impressed, i have a dual rect. three channel and I swear it doesn't sound that good, i need some reverb.

beautiful sound!
Yep. Better than before, that's for sure.

yeah mine's a series one as well. I'm quite pleased with it. I haven't gotten to go full bore at all yet, vol passed 2 yet...lol LOUD.
It certainly isn't the lightest amp on the planet, but it's not that bad really -- probably 50 pounds or so. I've had a couple of 2x12 combo amps that were a nightmare to transport, but there are casters on this one, which helps a lot.
@ecoloqua Yeah. It can run external cabs.

Yes... the Modern mode has more gain, mids & output than the 'vintage' mode.

Hey!
I just wonder, is this one of the Series 1 Rect-o-verbs? It sounds great btw! Killer distortion sound.
Hey, crxsh...thesockmonster here....what tubes/settings? Glad to see you rockin' on the Mesa!
Nope. There are 6L6's in this RoV. Most of what I played in this video, as far as I know, is mostly noodling. Wish I could help you, but I was just messing around with stuff that I've come up with really.
Thanks. And it'll blow your drummer out of the water... I promise. Last I played it w/ a band, I had the volume around 11 and was PLENTY loud.

@Xeter245 Yup. Series 1.
Do you play live with it much? Are you willing to share what settings you like on the dirty channel? I just picked one up a few days ago and I'm heading to the studio tonight. Just trying to get some pointers wherever I can.
Loaded w/ standard Mesa tubes.
Thanks!
Yeah, they're quite heavy. Casters are your friends. :D
Hey i'm back... was this too loud for your apartment?? I know it can hang with a drum set... My dual rectifier half stack is freakin rediculous, thinking about trading, selling, or taking my chancing with an attenuator...
Me too. This is a great amp.
Funny thing is, I HATE heavy metal, but this Rectoverb is a great amp for light rock and alt rock!
what is the difference between rectoverb and single rect?
No problem.
does it have any problems with the tubes buzzing?
Thanks for sharing.
is the difference between a single rectifier and a rectoverb just that one has reverb?
How Heavy is this Puppy? interested on Buying one :D
@georgeprodjex Yes.
sweet no emo for me. I got the rec, lol.
How's the clean on the Rectoverb?
Treble problem isn't quite as bad in this one I guess.
LOL! Thanks.
My amp is on eBay??
@diesect33 lol @ "go all emo"
Good luck.
@swamilainen Ok.
hey man the treble is alot better and not as spikey in this video.
the rectoverb is 70 pounds.
MESA REC
They should call these the Muddy-Verb.
Typical Mesa Mud. Sounds like shit.
